    I own a commercial recording studio and have been in the market for pianos for a while. I’m torn between a really nice upright and a baby grand, Mostly due to space. I have to figure out what to do with the piano when it’s not in use by my clients. Your videos have been extremely helpful and I think I’ve watched nearly all of them at this point. I want to say thank you from Washington state. You guys have given me an incredible education!

    The Yamaha is nice and bright. It's not possible to tell how it feels from this video, but the sound is nice. The Ritmuller and Essex are mellower. A high quality upright, depending on brand, would sound very similar to these baby grands.

    Ritmuller immediately jumps out at me, as more tinny, less roundness and full tambre. Is it the audio? Is it just me, is it the placement of it against the front window of the store?

      I'm currently shopping for a piano and have played on all but the R8. I have to say the Kawai has the best action for sure.
      I'd suggest y'all going to a Steinway store and playing an Essex to get a feel for it, but I felt the Kawai GL series was better to me.

    Love your videos. Always informative. Unless someone is a serious student at a music school or a very accomplished professional musician, I don't see the average family spending $20,000 on a new instrument when they can probably find a similar used 'low mileage' model for a lot less. And a good piano tech is worth every penny!

    I'm not really a connoisseur of pianos, but to me most of the baby grands if you close your eyes could just as easily be an upright piano. The bass/lower keys just don't sound like a grand piano to me.

    Labour costs are cheaper but still sell for the same expensive price as 10 years ago. The only point is to increase the margin for yamaha or Kawai.
    I remember wanting to have an A1. Now I can only buy a cheaper GB1 from indonesia for the same price 😂.

  • @christianbauer2910
    @christianbauer2910 3 роки тому +3

    Interesting how smooth the hammers of Yamaha and Kawai were tuned here. I had one on the harder side and the mids and above were more brilliant like the ritemüller here. So it totally breaks down to your technician, if he wants to tune the sound to your taste and not how it entered the dealer's house. I found the soundboard of the GX-10 better on the dynamics and nuances I can do with the Millenium 3 action. However, there are some dollars more to pay for that. The action of a baby grand is different from a real grand (280cm class) and also different from an upright. However the sound of a large upright (130 and up like a K-500), is not so much different, as it uses a squared soundboard and delivers a lot of energy in the room, however beyond the key action also the dynamics I feel are a bit different, so for large rooms, I would use a little larger baby grand. (212 size or B-Class in Steinway speak) but that is again some thousand dollars more and not suitable for a personal room.

    Nice comparison and chat but goodness, that Kawai was almost painful to listen to because it is in desperate need of tuning! It’s unfortunate because it’s actually a very nice instrument that just doesn’t sound good here due to lack of tuning.

    The Essex 155 is, in my humble opinion as a piano enthusiast is by far the best in sound quality and crispness and the tonal quality that I find most appealing when compared to other manufacturers and models. I'm stoll a huge fan of an older harder to fund Yamaha from the 1970s which I'm sure you can easily guess which one! But I won't name it since I'm looking to buy one myself. Thank you fir educating me further whuch really helps me in determining the most suitable piano. I really apprecuate hearing the pianos in comparison as thar's pretty much how most of us cystomers make our decision as you well know. I thoyght your presentation was very thorough and like I said previously it was very helpfil. If I can't fund what I'm looking fir in Dallas you might be hearing from me! Thanks guys. I just subscribed and I look forward to future reviews. In the meantime, I'm going to watching your past reviews.

    How do these pianos stack up against similarly priced uprights (Yamaha U3, Kawai K500 , W.Hoffmann T122 etc) in terms of touch and tone? Are you paying a premium for the grand piano shape and visual furniture impact or is the musical quality similar or better than the uprights ?

    • @bababoi9078
      @bababoi9078 2 роки тому

      Yamaha uprights have a great feel to them. Their response feels alot like a grand and sure the sound isnt as rich but when it comes to playability its the same. For the price of a nice upright you could get a cheaper grand so i think its up to your preference.

    Looks like the same mic set-up, yet the recordings sound different...the Yamaha sounds more centered, for example, as compared to the Kawai.
    So...based on these recordings, the Yamaha sounds best overall, the Essex has a very classic sound, and sounds just as good really...the Kawai sounds okay, but "smaller", and the Ritmuller sounds sort of out of tune, so maybe it should sound better than it does?
