About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday, we can transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.
In Dutch we have a saying: If you want to learn how to curse, buy some goats
yup, I work on dairy farms with cows and all the farmers/workers say "if you don't want to forget how to curse, buy goats". Sheep will work aswell but goats are truly the most mischievous animals you can get, they'll escape, wreck anything they can get in mouth's reach and can be pretty damn stubborn.
😂 Goats are smart enough to make trouble. Sheep find trouble.
LOL
That's hilarious
😂
You can tell these goats have been treated well, because they are more comfortable following people around than being anywhere else 😄
Hi I'm Larry, this is my brother Darryl and this is my other brother Darryl.
Hahaha 😆
PERFECT NAMES
👏👍
Lol! I wonder how many people will understand your comment. One hour ago, I was at Dillard's department store, here in Texas, and the sales associate name was Darryl. He said, "I'm the other brother, Darryl". We laughed and then had a conversation about Bob Newhart. Now that's a coincidence! 😀
@@cindym7234 my daughter walked in and read this….she rolled hers eyes and said "boomers!"
After hearing about not getting goats for years, I'm looking forward to this. 😂
smart move--wethers--good for you!
Abby is thinking.... now THESE cows i can handle.
😂😂😂
So basically you now have 5 dogs. You’re gonna love it when they get used to you and start following you around and interacting with you. I love goats!!!
There is a video on you tube by a vet that tells why goats need a playground. She talks about their specific needs and shows you examples of what will meet their needs. Miniture Nigerian goats were in a video about goats that do well in cold climates.
Sounds interesting. Would be helpful to know her name or the channel the video is on. Thanks.
Sez the Vet
To keep them from getting in trouble they will just try and mate and get fat and eat everything up with there boredom
@@annwithaplan9766 It is Seven Benefits of Goat Playgrounds on Vet Sez channel.
The video is Seven Reasons for Goat Playground on the The Vet Sez channel.
Goats HATE BEING WET. Big shelter is GREAT!
@@Dovietail Like The Wicked Witch of the West, I’m pretty sure that at the first sprinkle, they start screaming “it burns!” and are certain that they will start to melt 🧙🤣😂🤣
1.Always do a biosecurity panel and a fecal on new goats.
2. They hate getting wet
3. Wethers can't have alfalfa or too much grain and grain needs ammonium chloride in it
4. Always have loose minerals available. They can't get enough from blocks
5. Keep probiotics and baking soda on hand
6. Get them toys to climb on
YES to ALL of these!! Minerals and baking soda should be available 24/7!
Don't feed them on the ground they'll pickup too many parasites.
Plus if they get sick they don't have much of a will to live so it's best to prevent issues.
Keep Gatorade or Pedialyte on hand for emergencies when they need hydration.
I actually keep some dollar tree Pedialyte on hand just for my cats.
Although one is already partial to grape Gatorade.
Goats are escape artists. They are also ground cleaning machines.
I pray for their gardens. This is gunna be a challenge. I am so glad they are up to it so we can learn from them.
my goats will not eat the grass and weeds in their yard. I have to weed whack it. crazy But they wont eat weeds, just hay and hay pellets.
Oh my guy .. I laughed out loud when I saw that initial fence. 😂 Goats are professional escape artists and young ones cannot be contained. 😂😂😂
Thanks for the laughs .. this is going to be a lot of fun to watch. They are the most lovable creatures I hope you keep them❤❤❤😊
Same when I heard training them to the wire. Goats will find a way!
I did, too. They're like rodents in that they can flatten out to escape from places you wouldn't think they could.
Same, its like he never heard of goats before. I always thought Morgan had the right attitude concerning goats.
It's awesome how they immediately were so friendly. Nothing like how scared the Moo Crew was at first, or the pigs usually are when they arrive. Hopefully it works in the goats' favor in the long run so that this test leads to goats being a permanent animal on the farm... but now the biggest challenge is for them to find their place in the farm's ecosystem and earn their keep.
🌟 I know how to make your goats OK with dogs. I’m glad that you’re looking for solutions bc I did have a LaMancha doe beat the crap out of two 100 pound dogs that got into my pasture so I was concerned about Abbey & Toby. Obviously coyotes & wolves are enemies to goats so it’s instinctual for them to feel threatened by dogs as well. Goats are so intelligent but I find that they learn quickest by observing other animals - you need a goat that is friendly with your dogs. When I was new at homesteading, I came home late one December (temperature was -2 F) night to find that my 1st pregnant doe had kidded. Two kids were fine however one was still wet, cold & motionless but it had a faint heartbeat. I wrapped it in my jacket & started CPR. It took hours of work but he survived (he looks just like your red goat). He was extra small & it was an extra cold winter so he was raised inside with my dogs for several months. One day the herd saw him playing outside the pasture with my dogs. The herd was terrified on his behalf and stood at the gate screaming for him to get away from the dogs. He (Mervyn) ignored the goats & continued to play with the dogs. Slowly the herd began to calm down as they kept watching Mervyn & the dogs play. After about 15 minutes the herd lost interest. After observing their reactions, I wondered if they would now accept my dogs (the herd had been very aggressive towards them in the past). I brought the goats out individually to meet the dogs. They didn’t love the dogs but they didn’t show any fear or aggression either. After that they completely ignored the dogs when they went into the pasture. Funny thing is that once he was able to rejoin the herd, Mervyn learned that goats often greet each other by giving head butts - softer than playful head butts but still harder than any other animal would care for. Mervyn then taught the dogs to touch heads with him as a greeting before they could play. It terrified my dogs at first however they soon learned that it wasn’t going to hurt them. but Another shorter example that is also a cautionary tale is when I decided to teach one of my very large dogs who would refuse to get in my truck, to get in it. I should not have done this in front of the goat pasture bc they noticed that treats were involved so I unintentionally had their attention. My dog was a very stubborn breed all I could get out of him that day was to put his front feet on the floor board of the truck. I ended up lifting his hind end into the truck repeatedly before I gave up. I then decided to train the goats to a stanchion (very helpful to have even if you’re not milking). The goats all immediately put their front feet on the stanchion when I brought out the treats but none would get all the way up on the stanchion. They actually stood there perfectly still waiting for me to lift their back feet onto the stanchion. They had learned to earn their treats by watching my dog 🤦♀️. To confirm my conclusion, I worked with my dog the next day in front of the goats and only gave the treat when he was fully in the truck. I had tested the goats on the stanchion prior to the dog training session & had the same results as the day before. After the 2nd dog training session, the goats jumped up onto the stanchion without additional prompts.
WOW! We do not give them animals credit they deserve!
That's hilarious! I used that to teach my lgd a few useful commands by demonstrating with my siblings (I didn't feed them dog treats though, just some popcorn pieces)
That's amazing!
❤
Wow! That's interesting. Never knew goats were that clever.
Toby is literally the best with new animals. I love him.
My sister has had goats on her farm for years...they follow her like puppies. She has tree stumps and different lengths of logs that they love to climb on. You can also bury a tire or two and they will climb on those. It doesn't have to be fancy to entertain them. Baby goats (kids) are a treat to watch. Give them a few weeks in the new pen before you let them wander - it will also help Abby to know they belong.
05:04 its so cute that tobi is clearly scared but trys to protect alison
I thought he was going to Allison for protection!
@@Silverhaired59 your probaly right
They're awfully cute. Goats are climbers. They can climb out of lots of different fences.
I think he went to her to check and make sure she wasn’t scared too
i think he is going to her for his protection.
I told you containing them was hard. A ten foot fence made of wrought iron ought to do.
As long as there are no trees to climb near a fence. Or a low platform next to a low roof that they can jump onto and then over the fence. Breaking a leg on the way down is thought about after the fall, lol
You forgot the gun towers! LOL
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Goats are SO intelligent! After watching us a few times, one of our goats escaped the electric fence, came up on our front porch, jumped on the side of the sliding glass door, & walked into the house! 🤯
We learned quickly to keep that door locked! 🤣
Gold Shaw + Goats = Comedy Gold
I liked that Abby did not take any sh.. From these goats.
She put them in their place.
These are perfect for her personality. 😊
You were trolling us with that first fence just to get the LOLs and comments. :P
seeing the way Abby acts around the baby birds denotes she had squeaky toys as a pup, which in turn makes here hear the peeps of the birds as "TOY" 'TOY" "TOY"
Yeah the breeder really was irresponsible in more ways than one
This Alfred prank is getting to epic. Real diabolical...
Yes! I would love to see a reaction video of Alfred watching this
I love how the goats immediately escaped their pen, but only because you left and they wanted to stay with you.
Morgan's Goat Rodeo 2024 lol
I love them 😍
Congratulations on your new friends! Nomadic Movement has their goats in a sturdy enclosure at night. During the day, they park their goats where they could eat down vegetation. They park them by having a rope or harness on the goat, and then the other end of the rope has a metal stake they put into the ground. Each night, they put the goats back into the sturdy enclosure.
It is always fun to see Morgan learning about new animals.
And us, through him.
I've raised Nigerian dwarf goats since 05'. Never ever had an escape. Highly recommend:
Wellscroft Fencing Harrisville NH.
You can bucket train the goats, too. They are prey animals, so Toby and Abby look like dangerous wolves to them. This will be fun to watch!
be mindful about fence netting, I had 2 goats strangle themselves to death after they got themselves wrapped up in it, it's great stuff but goats are really really stupid and get spooked easily, I'd really suggest a solid fence setup long term and only use the netting for temp areas and only if you're watching them frequently, never let them be alone around it for very long.
I have goats on my farm and they were an absolute nightmare at first to keep them inside the fences but after a while they learn. I should warn you though, you will absolutely fall in love with them. They are the BEST! ❤ be careful not to give whethers too much grains or sweet treats because they can get urinary calculi which is like kidney stones and they can die from this. Your boys are beautiful 👏
Had me cracking up at the “pellets” Morgan!! You know that end so well, lol 😂 ❤
I'm so excited for your bluey goats- cute names and they're wethers! I have such a soft spot for weathers.
As soon as I heard Telemachus I was all 'Oh! names Bingo makes for when they play pretend' lol my kids love Bluey
As soon as I saw the fencing I knew how they would escape
same
@@LetterLadyZ Me 2
The goat names are from The Odyssey!
The names are from Bluey!
He told us in the farm meeting that the name where from bluey
Guess what you're both right! In this day and age , you could have discovered( googled that before correcting....just sayin'
@@anarchistepoch5500 And Bluey got the names from the Odyssee 👍
I knew looking at your fence the goats would be out in a few seconds .They are huge escape artists . We would wake up and find ours sitting on our porch rocking chairs 😊
The goats being named after Bluey makes me so happy! They are indeed escape artists, and I look forward to seeing your adventures to come.
My kids are teenagers so my husband and I watch by ourselves 😂 maybe if they get some girls he can name them Janet and Rita 😂
He said that, but the names are from The Odyssey. Maybe Morgan pranking us? Or does he not know? My kids are too old for Bluey, I keep hearing about it. Uses Greek names. That's a good start imo.
@@Nphensince Odyssey came before Bluey, perhaps Bluey took the names from Odyssey. 🤔
These guys have been handled, good.
Your going to have a big soft spot for them as goats are so sweet, if weened right and have had alot of human contact.
Miss my 2 goaty boys, brothers and they would tag along with me to walk the dogs.
You will do fine.
They will do fine and give it time , abby will too.❤
The goats went rogue 😆 and Toby is the cutest shy boy ever 💕
Yay! Three new pets for Allison & you to love on! Remember NOT to place anything near the perimeter that they can climb on and then jump over the fencing!
Can't wait to learn what their names mean!! Morgan, you're a great artist!
The fact the goats follows you and like you says they have been hand raised/ bottle raised and are pretty nice goats. A totally unhandled Goat would be like your pig and just disappear.
Telemachus was actually Odysseus’s son. 😂cartoons have the best classical references.
"I am behaving. Those new critters are not. They're a little cray cray. Not me - I am perfect." Abby
Morgan, you never cease to amaze me.
You have proven to be a natural Farmer. ❤My Grandpa was one before my birth in 1965 and I idolize him to this very day. ❤
I know you don't want anything bad to happen, but sometimes a good headbutt is what someone needs to understand the rules. Abby needs to learn by herself when she's doing something wrong, let her. She'll be a really good girl afterwards, I can bet that.
Goats don't like rain. It's best to have a place for them where they can hide from it. They also really like to climb anything. I thought the rocks around the barn would be a wonderful place for them.
The Weird Chickens Moment of Splat made me spew my lunch. LOL
A headbutt can do a lot of damage and be painful, so I don't think it's a good idea to let it happen. Since it can lead to a dog who's fearfull and can turn defensive against the goats, not something that'd work for a guardian dog.
Allowing the headbutts teaches bad habits and could seriously injure
the area around the barn is still in a rest period since the cattle will be back there for the winter, and i'm not sure the fencing over there is 100% goat proof
Aww goats are my FAVORITE farm animal! ❤
The second i saw that fence i knew theyd get out lol!
Don’t use just electric netting, goats get out easily, and need proper removal netting narrowing fences, and remember they can climb everywhere
My most favorite video so far
I know you and your wife are gonna fall in love with these guys ❤
Good luck with the electric fencing! Determined Escape artists usually don't respect the electric fence, temporary pain for fun outcome...not sure how you are going to manage...it will be entertaining to watch!!!
Happy you have joined the Goatie club!!!
A ten foot field stone wal/fence may keep them in for a few minutes.
The goats are really cute. Soon everyone will adjust.
They need some activities. Like a see saw. Wood boxes to jump on big boulders to play on as well. Check out asher house his friend made a play ground for the sanctuary goats!!
NOOOO...not yet!!! His fence is no way adequate yet. He is lucky the goats are quite docile and still young. But they gonna grow up quick, and they can jump and climb out of the main perimeter fence. Even at this stage now, adult goats will escape, if you add stuff in now, it will be a piece of cake...
They're goats ffs
it would need to be permanently stuck object for the goats, cause they can push stuff around and jump on it and escape that way
@@joemax6990 think the area his goats are in on Asher house is large area with fence but even then all that equipment is in center of the goat pen! His friend did a great job!
I am so excited for more goat videos, I have to live vicariously though you here.
When we got goats their hair, eyes and over all health look was dull and course. We started given a handful of black sun flower seeds. Their coats, eyes and Energy Shines . They looked so healthy.
He's got the space to grow acres of sunflowers.. and they're nitrogen fixers too I think,
Aww, they are absolute sweethearts!
I hope you and the goats will be good friends for a long time. They are interesting bunch.
Just got my internet finally after 5 long days without and get to see the goats arrive! Yay!
Morgan, I just watched your video and I have also ordered your latest T-shirt. I even added a little extra. I like what you do up there! I couldn’t do what you’re doing myself (too many health issues, too many surgeries) but I found sewing and machine embroidery. Wishing you and your wife best wishes. I’m also a nurse, worked for 20 years in the operating room at UMMC Shock Trauma. I loved my job! Now I’m in early retirement due to an injury. Such is life. Que sera, sera.
I really like that shirt design!!! Good job in designing, Morgan!
I saw the problem with that the space at the bottom of the fence was much too big right away XD Great that you've goats now, and good luck with them :)
Also, I'd love to be able to live somewhere I can keep a few goats one day. So this will be useful for a bit of learning too.
Abby is doing a great job and being protective of her farmer. It might take her a while but I really appreciate her behavior protecting you from the goat headbutts. You can't train loyalty like that, Toby and Abby are amazing dogs for the Gold Shaw Farm! (my Golberian padawan Ahsoka is a HUGE fan :P )
Goats are adorable
Remember the chaos with the cows when they first arrived? Look at how they are now, in time the goats will learn the routine and will become a perfect addition.
Goats are fun, and curious, and perverse. They do not herd well. If you push, they push back. They are excellent at cleaning up brush. It's great that they're halter-trained. Have fun with them. I look forward to hearing more stories of them.
I'm glad you've loving the goats and how lovely they are, they're adorable creatures for sure haha just a lil too chaotic and smart for their own good !
Hi Allison, great to see you
Is Alfred still your buddy? He was the one to move the fundraising goal! 😂
Wethers make perfect pets.
Love the goats! I suspect these critters are going to be GREAT fixtures on your farm and amazing characters on the videos! Love how they are all about pushing back on the dogs. They'll all eventually get along. So happy for you! Love the channel!
The goats are sweet and seem to love their new home and new owner 😊❤
LOL Goats are little Houdinis. Lots of luck with electric fence. We tried it, just makes them mad and they charge right through..🐐
Toby is so friendly.
Love the magician names from Bluey. All goats are escape artists!
these goats are such sweethearts! Allison made them instantly feel at home :)
Your videos are never long enough for me, you are such a great narrator. Hope to see more goats videos soon, thanks Morgan for being you!
Totally agree! Never long enough but always so grateful for some good content!
Medium Pace never ever ever gets old❤😂
I bet half of your viewers looked at that first corral and thought, Oh, no, no, noooo, that's not gonna work. That corral is just a suggestion, not a speed limit.
You hit the jackpot with these guys! So calm to begin with is a plus. Build them some stuff to climb on. We actually have a large concrete stacked area that they can lounge and climb on. Good luck, you’ll do great. There is a learning curve to goats. They are very curious and clever.
😂 Goats are pure mischief. Enjoy your new farm additions, Morgan. 😅
You are going to love how much vegetation they can clear. Don’t buy sheep. They require too much care cause they are quick to get sick.
It's 3am and so hot still I can't sleep. Came online to find something to distract me. Well, I got more than that. A good old belly laugh as you wrangled your goats. You are brave taking themon. Good they follow you so well and handle thehalters, too.
Bluey! Love the goat names. After decades of raising goats my husband was glad when the last ones left a few years ago. Makes me smile.
Morgan's a good artist! Beautiful new shirts!
How nice that the goats are so friendly.
For a few years I was a t shirt designer..loved it, too. I quit making square edged designs because printers would get them a little crooked and it really showed. Usually could leave background bits out.
❤ those goats. They are just adorable
And the game begins
Was this a bad idea? Content wiise, NO.
Goats are fascinating creatures. Apparently they have huge surges of dopamine when they see their "loved ones".
So michievious and so adorable :3 Especially the black and white goat :3 Makes me wanna just pamper the hell out of them :3
The permaculture orchard is aging beautifully and its always a treat to catch a glimpse of it. Do you have any plans on doing an update in the near future as the trees begin to provide other yields such as shade and wind protection for other plants?
Welcome Home Billy
I have 4 Nigerian dwarfs. They are the cutest. Mine know their boundaries now, They Don't escape unless the kids leave the stall door unlatched. I have a 2-year-old Pyrenees female and they coexist peacefully together but I had to train her with a vibrate collar initially to make sure she didn't chase them.
Once they settle in, they'll eat. They don't eat when they're upset or scared. The fence is not what's causing the statue freezing (fences are just challenges to goats) it's the dogs. Dogs are predators and goats are prey. They'll settle in but it will take a bit of time.
I've been breeding and raising French Alpine dairy goats exclusively on electric netting fencing for 8 years. When I used solar energizers I would occasionally have problems with the charge getting too low as vegetation would grow outside of the fence. Now that I have electricity in my barn, I use electric power and rarely have issues. I keep the solar energizers charged up in the event of power failures. Extreme cold and/or drought can also result in lower charge on the netting, so in winter i make their area smaller since there's little for them to forage anyway. Good luck with the training. It doesn't take long
They are soooo cute 🐐❤
My friend has goats. Part of everyday is spent fixing, repairing, reenforcing the fencing for the goats. They will tear anything down. She tries to keep a substantial pile of tree limbs piled before the fences to keep the goats away..
Only works for a while
Even I a non farmer, non goat owner know goats are escape artists❤
Exactly what the 8 acres I'm on needs😊
Congrats. You are going to learn why goats are the bane of all plants growing.
As soon as I seen the fencing at first was like nope it's not the right kind lol slips right through.. m loving this new chapter ✨️
This is gonna be interesting. 😊
Love them and Abby. There‘ll be a whole story to tell.
