A NEW FLY ROD ON CLASS "A" STREAMS, Douglas Upstream 8'8"/4Wt.

- Another purchase from the big Fly Fishing Show in NJ, had me literally testing the waters against some beautiful wild brownies. The Douglas Upstream 8'8"/4wt., is a medium action rod that loaded very nicely with a DT4W Floating line with my three fly nymphing tandem rig. Matched up with my 45yr old Heddon 300 fly reel, felt very well balanced and a joy to use all day.

Thank you very much! I’m very happy with the new rod, just perfect for the smaller streams. Oh yes, this mild Winter is definitely bringing out the bugs sooner. BWOs and little stoneflies active already and bringing some fish up to the surface. But we still need some steady rain on a regular basis. Appreciate you watching and commenting.

Thank you for another great video. Following the science rod change and why you changed rods was very important to me. I can handle 20 trout and my hands never smell touch 1 sucker carp whatever and I can't even get in my truck need soap anybody else have this problem?
Hi Denny! You are 1000% correct!! One touch of a sucker and you got smelly hands, Yuck! It’s not necessary, but having a rod that’s nicely sized for a stream is so much more comfortable to fish with all day. Thanks for watching and commenting.
That right there is Tenkara water. Fish fast, fish light, leave the net at home. Try it, you might like it.

Great video again. Thanks Scott! Did you get a new net? Good reminder about managing the slack. Sometimes I slow down my rod to steepen the sighter if the water gets deeper along a drift but you are right that you can mess up your drift by moving it too much. Thanks Scott.
Good morning Scott! Yes, it’s an Orvis catch and release net, the square frame really appealed to me because I can hold it better between my legs when releasing the fish. I couldn’t do it in this video because my new rod’s handle is so skinny it slips through my rod holder, so I had to still hold onto my rod when removing the hook. Yes, I still see guys bouncing their rod all around, very very important to keep that rod as steady as a rock. Appreciate you watching and commenting.

I really like it for e we hat it’s made for, small to medium size streams. Actually, it’s a medium action rod, loads very nicely with not a lot of line out and works very well with a Double Taper Floating line. Take care Brian and thanks for watching and commenting.

I only use a simple clinch knot, the important thing with this knot is make sure you do at least 4-6 complete twists and wet the knot before you pull it tight and make sure it’s seated properly. Hi buddy! No, it’s not ideal but they gotta try to please everyone, even the meat fishers, they buy licenses too. The majority of the first stream is class A from the headwaters to the mouth, it’s roughly about 10 miles long and they only stock about 1.5 miles in the lower middle section and the wild brownies population is doing much better than I thought. The upper headwaters is mainly brookies. Healthy enough for all to enjoy, and after the first two months of the season, it’s rarely touched. Appreciate you watching and commenting.

Scott thank You for all your videos. You get me all excited because we fish many of the same rivers. One observation that has been drilled into my head is the need to give the fish water immediately after catching. If I ran a 100 meter dash and immediately someone put my head in a bucket of water for 10 seconds I’d pass out. Please consider given them much needed oxygen and then get us your great pictures. Thank you

Hi Jamie! Well, I call it a mid-size rod, and being a 4wt. it still has some backbone towards the handle, but the medium action throughout makes the little guys feel nice too. Yes, the 4wt. makes it easier to handle a tandem rig and the wind nicely. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Hey Scott - Good to see on a small stream again. Love the new toys - LOL. Great choices. That rod was on my short list when I was looking for a new small stream rod, ended up with the new Orvis SFG 3 weight, which I would recommend to anyone. Nice net! I had that net in my hand multiple times at the expo, finally put it down and walked away - LOL. Now that you used it, how do you like it?
Good morning Mike! Haha! I did the same thing, had it in my hands several times and came back to it several times. Very very nice net but way too expensive! I talked myself into buying it, really had to twist my own arm, ha! What really appealed to me was the square frame, can hold it firmly between my legs when releasing the fish. But couldn’t do it in the video because the new rod has such a skinny handle it slips through my O’Pros rod holder, so I still had to hold onto the rod while messing with the fish. Very comfortable using a rod that is matched to the size of the fish and the size of the stream, a pleasure to fish with all day. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Thanks for another fun video. Did u happen to measure the water temperature? I’m wondering if there is a critical temperature at or above the fish are active and begin feeding. My guess is 40 degrees.
Hi Leonard! In my experiences, I’ve haven’t found that water temperature by itself affects the feeding ad much as a quick drop in temps. Example: The temp could be, let’s say around 35 degrees, the first day it drops to that temp will shut the fish down. But if its that temp for several days, the fish will get acclimated and start feeding again. And it often is that way even if the temps are in the 40s, the sudden drop usually is what causes the fish to stop feeding, but only for a short time, the fish still need to eat even when it’s cold. Hi buddy! The reel I’m using is an antique, Heddon 300, about 45 years old, I’m also using a standard double taper floating 4wt. Line, I don’t remember the manufacturer but may be Rio or Scientific Anglers. Appreciate you watching and commenting.

Hi Kipp! Actually, that reel I got brand new sometime in the mid 70’s, my dad had an archery pro shop and also sold some fishing stuff. I think the reel back then was around $12, ha! I did pick up another one off eBay a few years ago and an extra spool too. I’m very pleased with the rod, loads nicely with a DT4wt. floating line. I cut the line in half and save the other half for when it’s time to change out. Appreciate you watching and commenting.

Hi buddy! I still use my 50” Cutthroat Furled Shorty Leader with about 3.5 ft. of 4x Flouro then my tandem rig, I made the tandem rig outta 5x Flouro. It casts very nicely and loads the rod just fine, especially with the water load cast. Thanks for watching and commenting.

How is the trout whistler today .? I knew you 'd hook up when you broke into song in that second spot . Love it !!! I use a 9ft 5wt 4 piece everywhere i go . It works well on the WB as you saw yourselff but hard to drag the bigger boys to the net . I have my eye on a 10ft 4 for the Delaware but now you got me thinking a smaller rod might be the ticket as i fish mostly small streams in Jersey . Thanks for confusing me ! Any suggestions ? Honestly, there’s so many good rod companies out there, I have many mid priced and high priced rods, but for the Delaware, I’d recommend a fast action rod and I wouldn’t go under a 4wt with the present fast and very fast action rods, you can usually over size the line by one size up. I’d recommend getting an extra spool, so you can use a 4 wt line, and for the windy days, have a 5wt line spooled and ready when needed, cause you will need it on the Delaware some days. Scott! Congrats on the new set up from the fly fishing show in NJ. Douglas is a quality brand. What reel did you put on it? It does not look like or sound like a Euro Nymphing reel. Nice footage on the wild brownies as usual! It's a shame Class A waters get junk thrown in them like tires, bikes, and shopping carts. Sad really....
Hi Dave! I put one of my favorites, one of the first reels I ever got in the mid 70s, it’s called a Heddon 300, cost about $12 back then, it’s a classic, perfect for that rod. Some great fish in those overlooked “trashed” streams, a hidden beauty! Thanks for watching and commenting.

Hello Franklin! Great eye!! Yes it is, a Heddon 300, I got it new, sometime in the mid 70s, I actually have another one and a spare spool. A classic nockoff of a Hardy Marquis. I’m using a double taper floating line on it cut in half with added backing to take up space on the old style spool, keeps the memory coils down to a minimum. Nice hearing from the Netherlands 👍🏻. Looks like good water, but in the first segment, it's sad to see those tires and trashed sinks on the shore of a "Class A" trout stream !

@@pawoodsnwater7551 Barclays is who owns the Douglaston Salmon Run. The rod you bought is a Douglas. Barclays always a rich politician that owns the first 2/3 miles of the SR.
