- I bought a mid year Porsche 911 in one of the best factory colors of all time: ice green metallic. In this video I'll tell you why I think the mid year Porsches are so outstanding.
The mid year Porsche 911's were manufactured between 1974 and 1977 and have been the redheaded stepchild of the air cooled Porsches. They were plagued with engine issues thanks to a magnesium case of the 2.7 along with terrible emissions technology Porsche was forced to use on the cars to get them to fit stringent standards of the time.

This is my favorite of all your cars. Sunroof delete, no fog lights, pop out windows, the tartan, the wheels, it’s perfect! These cars need to be driven, if you’re not driving the ‘86 consider selling it so someone else can enjoy it and keep it going…

In the distant past I have had all of the 74 through 77 cars, including the Turbos. This was back when they weren't worth anything. The one that I kept and drove the hell out of for many years was the 77, 911S. I got it cheap because it had pulled head studs. I got real lucky and found a 3.2, put Webbers and SSI's on it and drove it! Over the years I did a lot of mods to it. That car was one of my favorite cars ever.
Glad you pointed out the Pop Out rear windows. They make driving with the windows open WAY BETTER! Unfortunately, 77 was the last year for them.
Driving experience wise, you can sell the 1986 because your 1976 car has a greater Fun Factor.

I have had a 76 Targa since 1992. Got rid of AC. Added Headers, turbo valve covers Carrera tensioners etc...Mine runs at 180 and never gets hot. It has 187000 miles

Great colour and it makes the car more special to have that history with it. My mid-year car wasn't sold in the US, although it did live there after being privately imported - a 77 Carrera 3.0 delivered in Germany, then moved to the US and now in Australia, originally silver but now painted Indischrot (Indian Red - often called Guards Red) now with a Carrera 3.0 engine back in it. Don't know enough about the 2.7 engine issues from the US but love that the car is so nimble, so responsive, so alive really - narrow body so small, handy and just a fun thing to drive. Enjoy it Will. As for selling your 86 - nah, you'll only regret doing that sometime later - if you have the space in the garage and can handle the (short term) financial hit - keep it.
The car is stunning. The only thing I would possibly do ( this is me being fussy) is add wing mirror from a RHD so as to give it a more symmetrical look. That’s literally about it. Great video and worth the wait 😊
A tremendous score, combination of colour and trim is ace! About your friendly 'Porsche predicament' I cannot possibly comment other than saying that before a new rc model car enters my collection, I have to make room for it by finding another one, a new home. Quite a wide spread between model cars and Porsches, still, principle stands I think. Thank you for sharing your Porsche life, inspirational and fun, also for marque enthuasiasts from the sidelines!

I fell in love with this car the moment I saw this video. After a month long search, I purchased a Grand Prix white 76 911S. My first Porsche. It’s a blast to Zip around in. I’m 6’3” tall Going to do make minor mods for a more comfy ride. Ordered a momo steering wheel w/extender. Based on your recommendation, will probably upgrade to a Wevo shifter. Just found your channel and will enjoy your take on the car. I bought my 1977 911S Metallic Blue Targa in 1987 with 10k original miles. Owned by a millionaire developer who only drove it while on vacation at his Hawaii penthouse and it was always parked in an underground condo garage. My wife worked for him for a few years so I pounced on it when he wanted to sell it. He had already done all the needed updates so I lucked out. It was a sad day when I had to sell it to get a minivan!!! Sold it to a good friend so it was watched over by him. I have since lost track of it due to the passage of time and the death of my friend, but that was my favorite car in a lifetime of great cars.

I own nearly the same car - '75 Ice Green Metallic with '87 3.2, rebuilt 915 - black interior though (someone replaced the original cinnamon). I've had it for 25 years and now in the midst of a full bare metal restoration with some upgrades. Beautiful car, thanks for sharing!

Love it Will. I personally think the 74-77 is the best year Carreras. Especially if you are going to “hot Rod” the motor and upgrade the suspension a bit. They still have the early 70’s feel and look with the chrome trim and features like the pop out side windows. Having bought and sold many cars as well my thought is if you’re not going to drive the 86’ then yes pass it on to a good home. The bottom line is when you go to the garage to go and drive what do you pick and if the 86’ is coming in 2nd on the G body decision then it’s time. Either way super nice collection!!

My all-time favorite color. Since you asked, if at all possible I would keep the '86 also. As you have noticed, the drive characteristics are different between the 2 cars. In addition to being lighter, the '76 has a much narrower and lighter wheel/tire combination, which will also make the car feel quicker.
Nice. Mine is a ‘77 with a 993 3.6l Varioram. I fell for the narrow body look (Carrera Flares were optional on mid-year cars) and the brightwork, somehow more classic looking. Previous owner had the original numbers matching 2.7 engine rebuilt and installed Turbo suspension, ducktail and a chin spoiler. The 2.7 grenade’d anyway, never made it out of the breakin period, never went over 5000 rpm. So, I found a low mileage 3.6, had the transmission rebuilt and got rid of the sugar scoops for a euro look. I thought about cutting up or back dating the body, but turns out when I first fell in love with Porsches, they were Impact Bumper cars… I prefer this look. Big motor and skinny tires, its a dynamic driving experience.

Great story Will. Been watching your videos since early days and your journey from Munich’s finest into Porsches. Funnily I followed very similar path and slowly acquired a 993, 996 and 997. My wife doesn’t understand why I need 3 of “the same car” 😂 I’ve also made them all my own - then I spontaneously just bought a ‘69 911E that was just too good to miss. Now I also have 4 and I promised myself (and my wife) that one of the others would make way. But I also can’t quite bring myself to do it now as I love them all. Like choosing least favourite child. I think there must be some kind of medical name for our condition!

So much fun (had a 76 S myself for many years). Loved the car and wish I still had it. It had to go due to an ill friend and the need to relocate. Ownership however was not without its problems. The 2.7 liter has known issues ; still loved it and yes…. It was my daily drive vehicle
Congrats on the ice green 911. Agree that these will / are gaining recognition as great drivers and prices will head up accordingly. Regarding the '86 . . . if it were mine, I'd feel good about keeping it if I took it out and drove it 'enough'. If it's just sitting in the garage, you should move it on to someone who enjoy it more.

Great car! I have a 76 targa with original 2.7 motor but a/c delete, 3.0 oil pan, 11 blade fan to address heat. I have committed to sell each time I buy new, but I kept-sold the newer cars. You said it best….simple. Pure. Those who drive it can’t believe it is 46 years old.

Love the channel, admittedly most any air-cooled in decent condition is out of my league, but its fun living vicariously through your content. I was 10 years old when this generation came out, the car that had me lusting after a 911 ever since... perfectly happy with my 996 fried eggs, but damn, my youngest may have to forgo college if I ever get a shot at a car like that...

I love that g body I wouldn’t have any issues owning it, but it’s a really good looking car that’s not modded too much. Sometimes simpler is actually better, great score though. I love your 86 carrera too, but at the end of the day it comes down to what you really want to do. Can’t wait to see what ya do with this one.
Love the colors! I have a 76S as well with 13K miles on it….time capsule car. It’s got MK headers and a Scart exhaust and sounds like trumpets from Heaven. My 964s are more tame so it’s nice to have something more analog and with more bark.
I definitely like 3.2s also but they are heavier cars. Brake booster, window motors, power locks, flares, etc. So you have bought a light weight Galvanized narrow body beauty with a 3.2 already fitted. You’ve got the same 915 transmission in your 86. Because you have now a lighter car in a prettier color with the same basic drive train, I’d say sell the 86. If your red car were a bit newer and had the G50 it may be different enough to keep but that’s not the case.

Congrats, Will. The issue with the magnesium case engines is that they are disproportionately costly to rebuild and I understand that machining is similarly pricey. The other issue is insufficient cooling, as you mentioned, but this can be remedied with a larger oil cooler.
As of this year, Porsche now supplies a brand new magnesium case for the 2.7 engine with paperwork to match it to the VIN of the original car. Its not cheap - $12K - but it solves all the problems of a leaking head stud pulled original or badly repaired/machined original and is made to modern casting standards (and won’t be subject to the absurd heat issues in the original cars due to the smog equipment and the 5 blade fan), My new mag case is currently on its way from Germany,
I've got a Minerva Blue '76 S that it still rocking it's original California-spec 2.7 with all the factory gremlins fixed: Updated head studs, 11 blade fan, carrera chain tensioners, factory oil cooler, etc. It's been an incredibly reliable, engaging, and fun car to drive for many years now, and the bonus is I can park it anywhere and not worry too much about it, like a 3X value long hood 911.

Absolutely stunning color, man. Really looks like a perfectly-spec'ed car. I had a chance to buy a yellow '77 911S a few months back, but it needed prob $25-30k of work beyond the purchase cost. One day!

Stunning color, so period perfect, and I think it looks great even today. And these days, I appreciate the updated engine. I used to be too much of a purist, but the 3.2 is such a sorted and reliable engine in comparison, and honestly not that out of place in that car.
Hey, Will, I have a 1977 911S with a 3.2, but I absolutely lust after your Guards Red '86. Yes, the Guards Red is extremely common, but it is the quintessential look for a G-body. You have to keep it.

Man Ice Green is so good! Add the 3.2 with a rebuilt 915 you got yourself a sweet ride Will. Wonder if the 915 was geared differently than your 86' and why it might feel better? Or maybe some hotter cams in the 3.2. Still, a win.

I’m experiencing the exact same problem right now! I’ve been happy with my 911, but went to an event this weekend in Winston Salem, happened upon a 911 in my top tier color combo, happened to have a for sale sign on the dash. I definitely can’t keep my current, agreed to sell it asap. But now as I’m creating the listing, second guessing it!

Welcome to the middie club! Ice Green Metallic is one of my favorite colors on these cars. There are two of these local to me and I never get tired of seeing this amazing color. So unique to the era. I would love to see a more vintage intake on your car. There's a company making weber IDA look alike ITBs that you could run modern fuel injection on, so it wouldn't be tech downgrade from the 3.2 setup.
Well, I saw the more recent video. :-) Love the group4 wheels you went with and Euro headlights. Not sure how you ended up with the last auction. Surprised you sold it given that it was faster than the the later g bodies you gravitate toward.

You might as well sell your 86' because it's just going to sit. This car is a much more fun car to drive. The weight difference is only one side of the story. The other side is the transmission. The earlier 915 transmissions have a 7:31 ring and pinion as opposed to the later 8:32 which gives the feel of more low end torque. Basically the car is geared down so it jumps more off the line. Quick side note. With the engine off check that you are getting full throttle when you put your foot all the way down. This is a common overlooked procedure when doing engine swaps.
The early 2.7 engines got a bad rap due to pulling head studs from excessive heat. The emission equipment (thermal reactors) were only a small part of the problem. The main problem is from a leaner running car with no front oil cooler. Porsche should have put front oil coolers on all of these 2.7 CIS cars. It's funny, they put oil coolers on all the Euro Carrera mid year cars which really would have been fine without them (MFI runs richer and therefore much cooler) but didn't put them on the CIS cars which run hotter.
Point is, if you own a 2.7 CIS car you need an oil cooler.

Glad you didn't, that's my favorite because I have the same 95, same color, but not as sorted as yours....some day I would love to do some upgrades but can't find a local shop that I can trust..

I used to hate Ice green metallic… because, to me, it was an in between silver metallic and green… and that color… on a 3.2 I won’t like it… but on a narrow body 76 one with such interior… it’s really lovely… nevertheless I’m way more a brown palissander or chestnut brown guy for g type 911☝️😉👍
I’m a 3.2 lover for good…for sure… but because yours is red….(I don’t like red… except when I have the car in front of me… I’ll never know why????) Keep the Ice green… Sell the Red guard for a brown palissander 😊… they are the rarest with the chiffon white☝️😁👍

I admit that I haven't watched all of your videos but I don't know that you talk about the '86 the same way you talk about your hotrod or this newest add. In fact, you started this video talking about the fact that you don't especially like guards red. The comments suggest to me that each time you open the garage door you will be faced with 3 cars you love and one that you have so-so feelings for. Make room. Use the proceeds to cover the cost and/or pick up another year/model or 'dial-in' the cars you own. Just offering an opinion.

I get it. I truly do. I think you snagged a good one here but I would not sell the later model g-body. I don’t like red cars either but yours is mint. If you have it in your budget I’d keep them both. The seat of the pants feel in acceleration is likely due to it (mid year) being a little more spartan sans sunroof and the like. I personally think the later gbody looks better despite the common paint color. That ice green looks great on the mid year especially with the brown and tartan seats.

The 911, this color with the Fuchs’s wheels was my dream car in high school….I even painted my ‘74 Super Beetle silver and put on fake Fuch’s on it to emulate it…I know that sounds absurd, but that’s how much I worshipped the car and it’s look.

Of the seven Porsches that I have owned, my old 1975 911S coupe remains my favourite. Although my current 996 is pretty damn fun too.

BTW, I agree with your thoughts on Porsche colors. They used to be great. I’m not a guards Red guy either (but it is a classic). The 70s has some fantastic colors. Modern Porsche’s are BORING! White, black and various greys are 90 percent of what’s out there. Don’t like any of them. For some reason White looks terrible on modern Porsches and looked good on old ones.

Bought a 74 in 1985 great car. Only changed the tires and oil for the most part. You don’t need to throw parts or should I say cash just drive them!
Don’t sell the ‘86! Lol I personally have a hard time selling anything. I’m so patient in my purchases, which take years sometimes, that I’m almost always thrilled with what I bought. (I like airplanes, too) So…. when I sell, I wait long enough to KNOW I’ll have no regrets. I have an ‘86 too. LOVE your new car colors inside and out! Great buy!!
The 1974 model preceded the smog equipment that caused issues with the 75-77 years. I have a 74 Targa and recently added the external oil cooler which in that year was an option. It now runs 40 degrees cooler. It’s a great car but I’ve thought about selling it just to try something new and every time I drive it I realize that there is no other car that drives like it.
Yes, 74 is the year to have if you want stock. My 76 and the 69 both have external oil coolers and run remarkably cooler.
Both the Ice Green and Ice Blue are dazzling
enjoy both G bodies... hang on to them. If you really have to choose between the 2 keep the mid year, its the best of both world... more "modern" engine with more vintage feel... which makes driving these older 911 so special.

I too have a mid year 74 which I totally love for it’s charm & sleek 1/4 panel’s over the more pumped up SC & Turbo guard’s, are you going to make it a Euro look over the US look? As those larger rear bumper over rider’s look hideous. I spotted on your red 911 you’ve swapped out the US spec sugar scoop headlight ring’s, this car would also look much better in my personal opinion with the Euro style headlight ring’s. Love the Ice Green!🤩
Stay tuned for some changes. You may be onto something, although the US bumpers don’t offend me like they do others.
So, at Cars & Coffee a few weeks back, this dude rolls up in a car the same color as yours with tons of patina and dings and small dents. Paint was super thin. 2.7 had just been rebuilt and the interior was OK. No thru rust anywhere. Mechanically sound. I just found out he lives about 2 miles away and it’s for sale! I have a 89 Cab now. I love that rough “Roc Motorsports” patina look. I’m fighten it!!!!

Those ‘74-‘77 EFI 2.7 engines were perhaps the less reliable of all production cars air cooled units Porsche ever made. Magnesium crankcases were light but soft and porous, prone to warping and pulled head studs, mainly in USA, Canada and Japaneses units, due to emission control devices which caused engines to run hotter (exhaust thermal reactors, partial exhaust gases inlet, etc). Check for pulled head studs....

I owned a ‘77 S, rebuilt the engine at 38,000. I think yours might benefit from the euro taillight treatment. Do what I do with guitars I consider selling: I put it downstairs in a closet behind a bunch of junk and if I don’t go through the hassle of retrieving it within a couple of weeks, it’s gone.
That’s a good tip. Truly the red car has been sitting on the lift for about a month…🤔

Beautiful car. The only issue I have with G-body cars are the dreadful compliance bumper bars. They really bugger up the clean stying cues but there's nothing you can about that if you're trying to keep it original. Also the sugar scoop headlight covers on American cars? Much prefer the European clean style again. But again, a beautiful car and congratulations on your ownership
Excellence lists the curb weight of the ‘74 as 2425 lbs and the ‘86 as 2866 lbs. 441 lbs is a huge weight difference. I don’t recall how much more the 3.2 weighs compared to the 2.7 so call it about a 400 lb difference.
I own a 1975 911S...and I am equally as enthusiastic about my car.
I’m in my late 60’s….retired Navy Officer, and also retired Federal Law Enforcement. I turned 50, the year I was promoted to O-6….and at that time, I had admired a Polar white with Navy leather interior 944s2 cabriolet, that one of my XOs bought, as a celebration of his divorce. Yep. I saw that car, in early morning light on the Navy piers in Norfolk….that car was brighter than the rising sun. Now, except for my Datsun 240z, I always had convertibles….and while I admired the 911s, the “911 cab” just didn’t seem to look proportional (except for the beautiful “out of reach” Sportster, for which - with apologies to President Carter - “I lusted in my heart”). But that 944 Cab….it did look proportional!!! And how!!! So, three kids down the road, a beautiful home in Rhode Island….now a Reserve Navy Captain, and a senior LEO with the “feds”, turned 50, and my supportive wife said “you’re good for a go”….and went, I did! I shopped and shopped for a pristine S2 Cabriolet….passed on three, before finding a Marine LTCOL in Tampa selling his Baltic Blue Cab. I still have the car….parked in storage for seven months of the year, as I live in New England. But damn it, even though I scream “make it stop!”, the “siren song” of 911 still beckons! I really enjoyed your video….and those aerial shots of your new addition, in that mint green (ice green did you say?) really pick up the sunlight most beautifully. And while I recognize that 911 aficionados and front-engine Porsche owners don’t always “play nice”, I still enjoyed your discussion on the new addition to your stable. And I see the NC plates, the aerial shots show “flat, low country”, I see the tall pines, wide cornfields, and on the drive, you passed a white pickup truck towing an airboat….I’m guessing Alligator River, Great Dismal Swamp, Roanoke River of Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge country. My other career was with the USFWS….I was manager and LEO in southeastern Virginia and the Outer Banks. I spent countless hours in those woodlands and on the waters of Back Bay and Currituck/Pamlico Sounds….wonderful country, no doubt, and numerous memories! I bought a 356 believing I would sell my 75 911. Didn't happen. Possible changes for your car:
1) H4's with chrome rings (brings out the mid-year brightwork)
2) 15x7" Fuchs will fit on the back with 205's
3) Stock steering wheel.
I had two 356s when I bought my 76S. The 76 was so good the 356s ended up being replaced with 964s. 356 always has a place in my heart but not in my garage for now.

Love this! I owned a '74 Targa in this color -- I bought it in '87 and put >85k miles on it before being a family man became the priority... So much fun. Imploded a piston on Hwy 17 (in Calif), and my mechanic allowed me and taught me how to rebuild it (Nothing like having someone take you under their wing. Thx, Bob Grigsby!). I was only 19 at the time. Upgraded it to S pistons, and all the std mods: clutch, chain tensioners, airbox valve, etc... I think we all understand once it gets into the blood, it never leaves. This is a beautiful, clean example -- love it! Having put in a lot of time into one of these, I just jumped ship yesterday and picked up a 2018 718 Cayman S... I have to admit, as much as I love the older cars, these newer generation cars are just incredible... Cheers!

I just bought a 78 with a 3.6 swap and now have to sell my 718 GTS. Dragging my feet on listing it. I also have an 86 Targa. Definitely NOT selling the Targa. I figure the GTS is a lot easier to replace of the two.
I wouldn't own too many cars that they affect your finances or spare time in ways you didn't foresee when you got into Porsches. The new one seems quite an impulsive buy so maybe get some 'headroom' back in your wallet and garage by moving the red car on. That would then give you the possibility to move on another as yet unknown car in the future, as you seem to have fallen hard for these cars and might want to try many different varieties until you find your perfect one/s.
