    That looks stunning in that colour
    I had a 944 s2 back in the early 2000s .
    I could of easily traded it against one of these for a a few grand .

    I had an 88 and it had lowered suspension, I raised it to standard, and the ride was such an improvement

    • @JoeTalksCars
      @JoeTalksCars  Рік тому

      Yeah I think cars of this age don’t do well being lowered. They are always going to be on the softer side and a higher ride height. It’s all part of the charm I suppose.

    • @3.2Carrera
      @3.2Carrera Рік тому

      I agree. The car is much easier to live with when the suspension has some travel to work with. Standard suspension at normal ride height can go over railroad tracks at 45MPH and not upset the car (or passengers).

    Nice 911 and the earlier 3.0 SC turbo look is a good one also. I did some maintenance work for the owner and took the test drive to see if all was well and it drove quite nice. The owner came by to pick it up and wanted a ride in my 987.2 Cayman S to see what it was like and he was very complementary and I told him his 911 is very nice also.

    I have a 1979 with 915 gearbox. Bought it with 300000km. It has been my daily driver for more than 4 years. Not delicate AT ALL! Left hand drive has a better driving position than the RH drive. They were designed to be LHD. (Look at cubby hole knob on Rhd cars) Most reliable car I ever owned and, and a great investment. Incredibly satisfying drive.

    • @JoeTalksCars
      @JoeTalksCars  Рік тому

      That’s ace!! Love hearing stories like that. 30 years in you must be very attached to the car. I’m guessing it’s been reliable for 30 years too. Back when Porsches were built like little tanks.

    • @jekutube9
      @jekutube9 Рік тому

      @JoeTalksCars pretty reliable, just small things like odometer plastic gears disintegrating, Steering wheel plastic bushing disintegrating and other plastic parts just not holding up well, DME relay switch recently got me stranded last year... but all replaceable and many forums to help you out. Reminds me that I got to get in it and drive before winter sets in!

    They are such a fun car, the coupe being the best and most valuable and the best to drive. A proper iconic Porsche and real drivers car. They are slow compared to the modern cars but you get a great feel. They do rot badly so make sure you check behind the door shuts and inside the frunk. Easily usable as a daily which I did for a good while. Enjoy Joe, a complete difference to your Cayman I bet!

    • @JoeTalksCars

    I owned a 964 Carrera C4 Convertible with manual gearbox in 2003, which I bought for €18500,- Yes. Amazing. I also purchased a simular model like this G-50 , a Coupe, in dark green metallic, with green leather interior, for € 15000,- Very popular cars today. And the prices exploded after I sold them, a few years later... My luck. Anyway, I loved droving them. Both aircooled models. The sensation of that sound, was mindblowing. I never had felt the same in other cars. Not even in a Ferrari. Porsches are so different and unique. All owners will understand what I'm talking about..

    Great car. Big fan of air cooled Porches. Had a chance to purchase a 3.2Carrera about 12 years ago for.. Gulp.. £9995 and I bottled it thinking about the work that maybe needed. Oh! how I regretted that decision even before values started sky rocketing

    Torsion beam?
    No.

    Definitely not VW rabbit “torsion beam” rear suspension.

    Sadly, I sold my 1984 3.2 and I regret it. I found the car difficult to drive in the gear changing department. The gearbox change Porche made did make the care easier to drive. However, I loved the car immensely and would love to purchase another if I could.

    Much prefer the cassis red over my ‘89 3.2’s slate grey. Tempted to go this colour in a few years when I give it its 40-yearly respray. Not sure I could bring myself to go the colour-matched centres on the Fuchs, though…

    I daily drove a late 80s fiesta about 5 years ago. I imagine there's a lot in common with it apart from the power and handling. I did enjoy that old school feel and sound. Very unrefined, way more mechanical, raw and unassisted. It makes modern cars feels like driving a computer game - things like the 981, TT mk3, BMW F30 generation and probably all of the others. I'm starting to think I might actually prefer the 987 to the 981 even though I'm more fond of the exterior and interior of the 981.

    • @JoeTalksCars
      @JoeTalksCars  2 роки тому +1

      Nice! Yeah there will be. I used to own a 1977 MG Midget and this brought back good memories of that car. No PAS or Servo and just seriously nice engaging drive. Certainly shifted too, so little weight.

    • @MadelnMachines
      @MadelnMachines 2 роки тому

      @@JoeTalksCars I’d be very curious to see what you make of the 981 S now you’re used to your 987. I’m also wondering if the .2 is really worth extra as a rebuild might be less than the price of a .2 and not guaranteed to happen.

      @@MadelnMachinesI owned a 987S Boxster for 15 years, 125,000 miles. Traded in for a 981 Spyder a year ago. There is a saying, ‘A modern Porsche is is a better car but a worse Porsche.’ Now I know.

  • @3.2Carrera
    @3.2Carrera Рік тому +2

    Great review! Your impressions are similar to mine when I drove one for the first time. I've sorted out my 1989 and know most of the car's quirks mechanically. The 3.2 does have weak head studs on the exhaust side of the engine that can crack and that's the main issue with them and maybe worn valve guides as well on original top ends. But as others have said these are very robust cars with dry sump oiling delivered with absolute precision. Rubber bits are dried out by now so they will be either leaking from the many o rings and seals and misting oil from some of the oil lines running all over. Fuel lines may be drying out and some of the plastic bushings and bits may be crumbling into powder in some places. But the parts are available albeit not cheap so the car is supportable. I think they are super fun to drive and I just love mine.
