  • The vagus nerve is a vitally important part of our parasympathetic nervous system and when not working properly can cause all sorts of health problem including gastro-intestinal problems, systemic inflammation, and in my case food sensitivity and possibly tinnitus.

    Nervous System has a big impact on the digestive health. If you are in fight and flight mode, you will not be able to digest your food and all the problems start there. I struggled so much from last 6 months as I was stuck in fight and flight mode due to some event. I could not sleep for 5 months, could not eat, had no energy, brain fog, lost so much weight, felt 10 years older. I had to take sleeping pills. I changed my lifestyle. Started going out in sun a lot, going for walk 30 mins everyday and like Neal mentioned push down your feet on the ground, make yourself grounded and if you can, walk bare foot on the grass, All nervous system problems will be fixed.

    This is hilarious. After accidentally learning to innervate the vagus nerve, I noticed extreme difference in taste (couldnt drink the same energy drink without cringing from overly powerful flavor) and massive changes in hunger and gastric effects. Then I Googled these concepts thinking there would be NOTHING, and found this.

      How did you innervate the vagus nerve?

  • @2fastnfurious4u

    Because of poor posture - slouching your stomach was compressed/displaced so you could not digest well. Also Vagus nerve innervates stomach and could get pinched around stomach in case of slouching posture

    Awesome vids Neal. I just started posture restoration a month ago. Calming the vagus nerve has been a huge part of therapies for me in the past after several traumatic experiences. One thing I found valuable is simulating the end of run/jog (slowing down to a stop, left/right left/right tapping the ground slower and slower with your feet til both are flat footed) while I'm sitting in a chair. I think this tricks the nervous system into thinking you've finally gotten away from a "wild animal" chasing you. "Waking the Tiger" is a good read for the fight or flight response.

    Thanks Neal, keep up. I like the way PRI integrates more than just musculoskeletal system to fix it, something that physicians, PT, etc still need to adopt, I believe there is even more to discover from other systems of the body and outside of it to fully understand this extreme complex machine, even PRI is still scratching the surface.

    • @SuperPureskill
      @SuperPureskill 2 роки тому

      I don't fully agreee with PRI just scratching the surface. They acknowledge every aspect that there is, and are open for them playing a crucial role in someones health. The question is to what degree one person needs to focus on these different aspects in order to restore health, that varies from person to person, with ofcourse some common issues that pertains all of us.

I've not been able to eat solid foods for five months and I've lost nearly four stone. What I cant eat doesn't digest. I get heart palpitations after. My vagus nerve food sensitivity horror story= At 17 years old- vanilla extract and caffeine related food caused 180 bpm tachycardia, no chocolate, soda , coffee for a while. After a couple of years jogging, my vagus nerve seem to got in shape and everything went back to normal. At 34 years old on a stressful job drinking 3 cups of coffee a day , tachycardia showed up again. Quit coffee forever, but chocolate and vanilla. At 48 got a surgery and general anesthesia seems to disrupt my vagus nerve again, 157 bpm at recovery room. A month later a vanilla smoothie cause 190 bpm tachyc. 3 month later 139bpm pulse doctor diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism, two year later after treatment got hypothyroidism, now on .50 mg Synthroid. At 50 years adding sodium and acid fruits to the vagus nerves sensitive food list, causing heavy itch in my scalp and rising my blood pressure 150 /100. I'm 54 , adding fat to the list as I got orange drop of grease on my stools with no apparent reason. Today I have neck pain that irradiates to my arms.

      I've been through so much of what you've experienced. Tachycardia, hyperthyroidism, itchy scalp and even hair loss in spots. Mine were all related to too much prolonged stress. My digestion was a mess.
      The scalp itch is a fungus/yeast. I stopped eating so many carbs (even fruit) and began taking magnesium......and my issues started clearing up immediately. Carbs were NOT my friend.
      Try switching to a low carb, lean meat diet. It lowers your body's inflammation, which is likely causing everything you're experiencing. Carbs screw up your digestion which can wreak havoc with everything in your body.
      Look up Carolyn Dean. She explains why we get sicker after surgery. It often depletes our magnesium storage. 90% of people are deficient in magnesium, and just supplementing that alone will change your life if your body is inflamed and stressed.

    I've been in the health industry for decades studying functional medicine and all my histamine intolerance started after contracting pneumonia 6 years ago and having to take a round of antibiotics. I can be feeling great and the second I stick something in my mouth my body doesn't agree with, I go into an instant light headed feeling. Almost as though I have low blood pressure, but when I check it all is fine. Blood sugars are perfect, and everything else is perfect according to blood tests. I would also get urticaria and hives if I ate fried foods, popcorn, or junk food. A couple of weeks ago I started using an infrared sauna thinking that would help with detoxing and low and behold, I haven't had to take any zyrtec in 2 weeks, whereas before I had to take it every 3 days or so to prevent the urticaria. However, I drank coffee this morning and immediately felt dizzy and light headed, but thankfully no urticaria.
    This whole thing has been driving me nuts for 6 years because I have tried everything in the book when it comes to healing the gut, eliminating fungus, leaky gut, upper cervical chiropractor, among many other things. Only thing I am hoping is that my infrared sauna will continue to help and eventually get rid of what is going on in my body as I am seeing a light at the end of the tunnel since I am not getting the urticaria anymore - knock on wood as it's only been a couple of weeks, but this is the longest I have ever gone in 6 years without having to take the zyrtec.

      @NealHallinan  4 роки тому

      Great observations. I've read interesting things about the infrared sauna. Good luck going forward.
      Luckily my face doesn't break out any more, so my histamine intolerance was just a result of increased tension in my body. Now that my tension is less, I'm no longer triggering outbreaks even when eating foods known to trigger histamine reactions.

      @@crizeldamaldonado9796 Still fighting this mess, but since my last comment I at least have found out the problem. Blood work showed very high histamine levels. Turns out according to my DNA I have a DAO deficiency. That in combination with a serious fungal infection in my gut which also causes high histamine. I started on a Niacin protocol. I just started a couple of weeks ago and have worked up to taking close to 500mg per day so far. The goal is to take upwards to 1000mg per day and use in conjunction with the infrared sauna. This not only rids the body of toxins, but it increases mitochondrial function and NAD+ levels in the body. I do feel a lot better since I started a couple of weeks ago. I am also doing a protocol to get rid of the fungal infection and just started that so hopefully I don't get herxheimer (die-off) reactions. I'm taking it very slow so we will see. I also started low dose naltrexone to help with the inflammation in the gut, but actually getting rid of the fungal infection should take care of the root of the problem and everything else should line up for the better when it comes to health. Appreciate the comment!

      @@Total_Body_Fitness_USA I can relate to the fungal issues. I've struggled with histamine responses for years after eating. My gut health has always been poor/sluggish digestion. I could never really digest carbs well.
      The sugar/carbs I was consuming were feeding the fungus/yeast in my body. My inflammation score was a 10 on a scale of 1-10. Basically my body was in a pre-disease state.
      I recently started eating a very low carb diet with lots of healthy fats and protein. Lifechanging. Histamine response began diminishing within a day or two. Also started supplementing magnesium (something most people with gut issues are super deficient in).
      Within 3 days my 3-month long insomnia started lifting, better digestion and mood. Tachycardia is improving. So happy I could do this without medicine. This has been a lifelong struggle for me.

    Hi Neal,
    This is fascinating stuff and I have experienced so many similar things since my body locked up after a jaw injury some years ago. I now have problems with histamine like never before since I first got injured, also gluten and dairy to an extent. Never had any issues before. Constantly stressed out and unable to relax. Miles off being able to touch my toes.
    I'm working with a PRI trainer over here in the UK to try and get to the bottom of my problem. He's sure I'm in the classic left hip forward / right ribs forward / left shoulder elevated pattern - even I can see that much - but something at the neck/jaw seems to be stopping me properly shifting out of the pattern. I have a jaw that deviates a lot to the right when opening but we can't seem to work out if that's the old injury or a muscle patterning thing.
    Anyway, do you have any neck repositioning tips that worked for you? Can't hurt to try!
    Many thanks. Love the videos.

    • @NealHallinan
      @NealHallinan  5 років тому +7

      That's very interesting, Henry. I forgot to mention it in the video, but I tested positive for 3 out of 4 genes involved in gluten intolerance. I don't have any issue with dairy, however. A jaw that deviates to the right, from a PRI perspective, is called a Right Torsion (it's actually an osteopathic term). Someone with this cranial will undoubtedly have overactive neck muscles (SCMs and scalenes, particularly on the right side) and compression at the Occiptial/Atlas joint (base of the skull/1st cervical vertebrae). I was a right torsion. PRI has exercises to get someone out of this state, but it then requires a mouthguard worn at night to restabilize the neck. It's doubtful that any of the standard PRI exercises will stick without addressing the cranial torsion because the neck will not relax, and an overactive neck can influence both the ribs and pelvis.
      In regards to an old injury or a muscle patterning thing, it's probably both. The old injury
      can lead to a muscle pattern (protective in nature, but counter-productive in the long run).

    • @ExpectingDelaney
      @ExpectingDelaney 5 років тому +1

      Thanks for replying Neal - I'm on the case with the jaw aspect. I should have actually said above, I actually suffered a jaw injury many years ago to the right hand side of my jaw and its only now that I'm connecting that with all my subsequent lower body issues.
      My local hospital have now looked into it and told me I have an 'internal derangement' of the right TMJ. So I'm thinking/hoping that that is at the root of everything, it would make a lot of sense in the light of what my physio and yourself are saying. They're going to do some sort of injection to try and get the disk back into place.
      At the moment it seems like all the PRI exercises are running into a block at my neck - efforts get myself out og the classic patterns seem to make the body pain better and the jaw pain worse. It's almost like the whole body is compensating to get the jaw out of pain and ending up in a worse state because of it. Fingers crossed they can loosen up the right TMJ and that allows everything else to calm down.
      Thanks again for the great vids. V much helped me get my head around what I'm trying to do.

      I don’t actually see every comment. Some just get buried in various threads. C1 can be “off” as part of the right TMCC pattern, so from that perspective it wouldn’t change much bc the pattern is still there.

    After listening to your video and your interest in the connection between the vagus nerve, mast cell reaction and stomach issues, I think you may very well be interested in Dr Henderson’s work and the CSF Foundation. They deal with instability of the Skull, C1 & 2 in people with connective tissue disorders. Even people without connective tissue disorders can have instability in this area causing everything you describe and more. The guys dealing with these problems know very well the connection between the instability, mast cell activation syndrome, tinnitus (caused bu IIH), vagus nerve compression (causing everything up to complete gastroparesis), anxiety and much more.....and yes posture etc helps. Hope this helps. Be well. X

    The sugar issue is probably disbiosis (when you eat sugar the bacteria in your gut feed and release histamine).... I have Mast Cell Activation Disorder. An extreme version of sensitivity to histamine foods and other environmental triggers.
    The mcas likely came from SIBO.... That likely has a root cause of vagus disfunction.
    I've been doing the Nemechek protocol. Fix the gut bacteria, reduce inflammation, and vagal nerve stimulation.
    I used to have hives that would swell up so large my arm would be twice it's normal size (it would last for a week and weep serous fluid) when I ate the wrong thing. Now I get a tiny hive or two that go away on their own in a couple days.

    Spot on man! Do you possibly have a connective tissue disorder ??? Connective tissue disorder can cause a super tense body trying to hold ligaments and bones together in a loosey goosey system due to a lack of collagen. The collagen issue can can impact the vagus nerve. The histamine issue is from the mast cell Disorder kicked off by the Vegas nerve looping brain body feedback loop. Good luck!

    • @NealHallinan
      @NealHallinan  5 років тому +5

      Hi Simone. I'm not sure it would alleviate specifically the right sided tension, since right sided tension is a function of a pelvis/rib/neck position that our body is stuck in. However, developing better vagal tone can certainly decrease bodily tension overall since high vagal tone improves function of our parasympathetic nervous system.

      Neal Hallinan how about when clients are helped with a bite guard? Wouldn’t that be an example?

    • @NealHallinan
      @NealHallinan  5 років тому +4

      I think that could be an example. I suspect that vagal tone would increase as neck/cranium tension dissipated. In fact, since I got out of my right torsion the intensity of my tinnitus dropped and I went from not being able to touch my toes to being able to easily touch the ground.

    • @so3867
      @so3867 5 років тому

      Neal Hallinan ya that’s exactly where my mind went - the bite guard must be helping to dissipate tension in the jaw and therefore promote a healthier vagus nerve. I originally came across this idea a couple years ago via a bulletproof radio podcast interviewing dr Stephen Porges on Polyvagal theory. One suggestion to “hack” the vagus nerve was to get ones teeth fixed, essentially shaved to allow for a more uniform bite and less tension in the jaw during bite.
      The other place my mind goes is the emotional side of this. I have read that chronic stress can lead to chronic activation of the more primitive dorsal branch of the vagus nerve that is responsible for fight or flight when the ventral vagus complex fails. They are also correlating this with left brain dominant people. Whereas those who are more right brain dominant tend to have a well developed ventral vagus complex and less activation of the dorsal. I wonder therefore if the PRI right side tension correlates with left brain dominant people. Anecdotally I have seen this in the presentation of myself and 3 non blood relatives.
      Ultimately I know PRI says everything starts with the hips, but I wonder if the hips and feet are unstable due to chronic activation of the dorsal branch in a constant feedback loop and therefore we would do better to both address the hips/feet as well as strive to strengthen the Ventral vagus complex with positive social experiences, stable relationships, and reducing causes of fear.
      I recognize that the breathing exercises of PRI are helping to increase vagal tone but if ones life feels unsafe, this may not be enough to counteract the effects of chronic stress.
      Thoughts?

    • @NealHallinan
      @NealHallinan  5 років тому +4

      In regards to teeth, I wouldn't be quick to shave teeth down. I would make sure that someone's neck is moving correctly. Tight neck muscles can mis-position a jaw which then leads to a "bad" bite. But the bite in this case is only artificially "bad". PRI repositioning techniques often restore proper bite because neck muscles finally relax. If you shave teeth down without making sure the neck is accounted for you might be causing more problems in the long run.
      In regards to left brain dominant people and right side tension, I believe there is a good possibility that personality types and muscular tension are linked. This is an area that I've always been interested in. I think rigid personalities are more likely to have rigid bodies. Fearful people will have fearful bodies (a fearful body is a rigid body). Stable personalities will have highly adaptable bodies that can respond to all types of environments and physical situations.
      Ultimately I think the physical, emotional, and even spiritual (not necessarily religious) aspect of a person's life has to be addressed. PRI addresses the autonomic nervous system. So does Polyvagal theory, so do most spiritual traditions. Some people need intervention in multiple areas. Some just need to feel their right big toe more. The founder of PRI is well aware of the total mind/body aspect of autonomic function. So I agree with you wholeheartedly. And I'm pretty sure those at "PRI central" would agree, as well. Trauma and stress can play a huge role in painful patterns of thought and movement that we get stuck in.
