It's amazing people got behind outlawing freedom of association in the first place. This is the reality people don't want to recognize, that more freedom is always better than less, and it isn't worth getting the federal government into private affairs. All the consequences from bad decisions in the past are finally coming together, it's sad but inevitable.
Ok, diversity. I get it. So … how do you know you ain’t **already** diverse? Have you queried current members on their sexual preferences or gender? I mean considering there was no discrimination in the Debian project **at all** it would be reasonably to assume you have already met whatever imaginary quota you set yourself and can go back to not discriminating anyone, that would be kinda cool wouldn’t it?
The thing is that the whole field has stagnated, so any real improvement would mean very drastic change. Everyone's basically fiddling with knobs, because all real improvements in design would be too expensive and far-reaching and break compatibility and half the time not even improve anything, such as systemd and wayland. I wish there was a new kernel, new OS and new GUI infrastructure designed from scratch, applying all the lessons learned since linux and X were new. I wish Arcan would become a real option in some common distro.
I mean, that's straight up illegal hiring discrimination if it's taking place in the US, and I think it is. As far as I can tell, "Debian" is a project of Software in the Public Interest, a New York corporation and "Outreachy" is a project of the Software Freedom Conservancy, likewise a New York corporation. If one NY corporation hires another NY corporation to hire paid interns, they're definitely going to have to comply with US laws and requiring specific race/sex/sexuality characteristics is not one of the things that's allowed. If this is, as Lunduke suggests, 'ordinary practice' by Outreachy, they're openly flouting the law in the assumption that nobody will sue for discrimination for fear of being labeled a bigot. Or just in the assumption that discrimination against the 'privileged' doesn't count (although tell someone from Vietnam, Malaysia or Thailand that they're too privileged to count as a minority... not really thinking that through when excluding Asians. Although, I mean, there's also a number of Eastern European states that raise questions about who they're considering too privileged to be included.) Ah, they might be framing it legally as a 'grant' for a 'project' though. Seems very, very sketchy, not sure you can just rename paying for work performed and dodge hiring practices laws.

Maybe I'm wrong, but another way to look at this could be to give people that fulfill certain criteria (e.g. some minority) better chances at applying for jobs at other companies. An internship at Debian certainly doesn't look bad on a resume and increases the chances at "the job market" of those who have it. I don't know why certain groups of people build a minority in the tech industry and I don't want to make assumptions if it's because of discrimination or maybe because certain people just don't want to work in tech. I don't think what Debian does here is bad, I just don't get why you would want to work at a company that discriminates minorities (which would be the goal, to get a job you wouldn't get without the internship on the resume, right) Sorry for the broken English, not my first language

Although, I mean, there's also a number of Eastern European states that raise questions about who they're considering too privileged to be included.)

I knew you were wrong about these guys. I've seen some of the Linus speeches from out west USA and it was obvious that the "adversary" was well embedded in Debian too.
Darn it! Didn't we just have a list and Debian was on the non-woke side??
Wow.... even this have a DEI detected list.. just like Gaming... 😅
Curiously, The Boeing 737 has had over 500 accidents and almost 6000 fatalities. It was also revealed that a lot was due to software issues and Boeing had outsourced the coding for 9€/hour.
I've using linux since 1998, but with the linux dei stuff, linux is a bigger dumpster fire than ever; I think I'll be switching to BSD.
No freebsd is worse
You mean the 737-800 Max, right? The original one has been solid, i thought.
Better make it OpenBSD rather than HuglessBSD
@@DigitalMoonlight, I don't get the reference. Does their license say you're not allowed to hug the developers? Or ask for hugs in return for your code?
@@seriouscat2231FreeBSD used to ban virtual hugs in their Code of Conduct. Was a weird time, I think that got removed after people had a good laugh at their expense.
Remember a few days ago when you said Debian wasn't woke? Yeah... About that 😂. I'm still waiting for you to address the way they pushed out their head KDE developer over refusing trans ideology within the Debian community. That would be another one you should look at. I love Debian. But the Woke mob has sadly infiltrated it. At least we've still got Arch... For now.
holy f they all turn insane and the drama lizard king is putting the thumb on it all :D what a time to be alive
So - is there a single linux distro not gone completely insane?
Solus after their former lead "fruity" dev stepped down seems to be going in the right direction by just making the best distro they can, and taking their time to move from X11 to Wayland. Also Manjaro as of now is also going in a good direction, and I'm currently using Manjaro Gnome(thinking of testing XFCE soon) with good results on my main systems, and Solus Budgie on my older systems where Manjaro is a bit too heavy, or I need something more simple like for my elder mother.
Gentoo?
@@helidrones yeah I guess that's an option if you're willing, & able to compile it yourself.
Slackware is still the same as always
I use Manjaro and i'm very happy with it. Very far from being woke.
yes, the politics over at Debian is WOKE, I was surprised they made your NOT woke list. You can expect Debian to go the way of Boeing, etc....
There was a valid point in the comments that Debian did not come up with the criteria. The other organization that offered the money did it.
Can I use AI to change my race in the video calls? I don't see a reason why I can't apply and just "embellish" my "identity" a bit (a lot).
I don't think what Debian does here is bad, I just don't get why you would want to work at a company that discriminates minorities (which would be the goal, to get a job you wouldn't get without the internship on the resume, right)
Sorry for the broken English, not my first language

Now someone's gonna put an entire list of every project Outreachy has took part in and call it "Outreachy detected"...
2:09 sometimes you do need people without much skills, to do mudane tasks, i mean, every project has task that any programer can do, and tasks that only the experts can do, if we only have experts, we will waste their time with mudante tasks that need to be done, but anyone else could have done, instead of using it on the harder problems.
So....Arch is the only major distro left?
Unfortunately Arch attracts Redditors like a magnet. Wouldn't be surprised if they were in the project and did something similar a few months from now.
Yep Arch branch for a major distro, but Manjaro looks good as well seeing as one of their Devs got banned from the Gnome forums for not going along with their BS.
Also Solus that got rid of their old "fruity" lead dev who couldn't hack it, and was being a control freak seems to be in good stable state going forward taking their time to move from X11 to Wayland, so those are two distros I can currently recommend for people who don't want to be on bleeding edge Arch.
Lastly I'll say I hope we get more eyes on Haiku OS(based on BeOS)to get more software ported, and more hardware working like GPU acceleration support, and WiFi drivers just in case there is a day we might have to jump ship, or just want a good alternative for older aging hardware seeing how lightweight Haiku OS is.
@@iiisaac1312 Nothing would surprise me, but for now I'm saying Arch/Manjaro, and Solus are the best non woke daily driver distros we have out there that I know of anyways.
is there any from a non European or American country ?
@@belstar1128 I'm not the biggest fan of it, but Deepin OS comes out of China, and seems to just be a straight forward distro to use, other than the fact many say it has ties to the Chinese communist government. 🤷♂
Omg!
Just in time before I choose my distro, haha)))
Is it ok to use any distros that use Debian as a base, or is it going to have these weird roots?
(I'm new to Linux)
Instant cure for the Debianism I was suffering from.
"Tolerance is the last virtue of a decaying society."
The original meaning of tolerance is to coexist with evil in order to avoid a greater evil. If a thing is good, it does not need to be tolerated, but is accepted on its merits.
this is like adopting pizza as food in your country but then banning italians from making pizza. "this is our food now".
Pizza wasn't an Italian thing ever aside from the Roman pizzaioli who fed soldiers something very loosely akin to what could be considered a primitive "pizza". is Outreachy the same as 'ReachyRound'?
out preachy
"Anyone who faces discrimination in the technology industry of their country is invited to apply" means the section of text discriminating against groups of people is void, but only in its jurisdiction.
Somehow still discrimination, but not the one they had in mind.
Meanwhile at Slackware: "I don't care what you are, I just need help with hardware support. I heard Intel has this Core 2 Duo thing that came out. Oh, and can you help change my bed pan?"
Damn. I just started my Linux journey with LMDE. Looks like I'm hopping quicker than I expected.
You are confusing Outreachy (who works with diversity in many open source projects), with Debian (who makes Debian linux). They are not the same project. The money they pay people don't come from Debian but from Outreachy and their sponsors. Claiming that this is Debian''s policy is directly misleading, both title and description of this video is too.
