I just watched this movie alone here in my dorm room in Copenhagen and now I'm torn between all these emotions I'm getting. I think that if you've ever experienced true love in one way or another, this movie will affect you deeply, if you give it the attention it deserves. Also, I like how the Japanese photographer and the director ask for 'tension' in the scenes in the movie as I think the movie is best described as being extremely tense. I hoped they could stay together in the end but now all I can do is contemplate what he whispered in her ear.
I love how natural this movie is. When Bob and Charlotte first meet, it isn't love at first sight. There is no instant and snappy dialogue. Rather, it is a somewhat awkward conversation between two strangers but you can feel the underlying spark of chemistry. So well done.
This film is great when you've traveled abroad by yourself and meet people along the way. It's always enjoyable, and at the same time not because you know you will never see them or interact again.
Watched this film yesterday and I just can´t take my mind off it. It feels right like watching Birdman for the first time. These kinds of movies belong to the very exclusive group that you could define as AN EXPERIENCE.
What I love about this scene is that the characters don't introduce themselves to one another, nor do they ever. That's the culture of travel that I love so much. You can bump into anyone you meet and, over the course of a few days, experience such intense, intimate conversations that you can't even have with your closest friends and family. And then once these few days are up you say goodbye and never see each other again.
+MrHousecup Ill try to do the same two months ago, but the place was full... at least, i get a sit on the left side of this long table on the bar.... and i enjoyed a lot to be in the same place that Bob and Charlotte¡
When she innocently said she wished she could sleep...I think she realized as she said it out loud, that it sounded a little forward...then when he wished the same thing, she realized he meant it innocently as well...not as a creepy come-on to hit on her. That's when she knew she was safe, and she could let her guard down with him.
Being a 53 y/o in a 30 year marriage, who travels 5-6 times a year internationally, I can say this is the best film ever made. Traveling alone, especially internationally, is a transcendent experience. I get to be truly alone and with myself, which is impossible at home. After the jet lag wears off, in 2 or 3 days, the experience begins to reveal things to you that never appear at home. Like how you really feel about your life, your family, your job. Home begins to feel like a bubble, another world, another life, another universe. I just don't think this is possible without being on another continent, 10-16 flight hours away from the cognitive nest of my life. I don't know how anyone could imagine 20 years ago what the last 20 years of travel experience in my life have been like, so I must conclude I'm just as human as everyone else and not special. This makes it better in this way: I'm not alone. Now that I'm 53 and this movie has once again come back to me, it's even more real now. My life just runs on, I have no choice. And I wish I could sleep.
She was 19 and he was 53 at that time and just pay attention to the chemistry between these two...AMAZING. The acting here is so incredible. One of those movies that show that you don't need special effects to create an awesome film.
@@44clambert Hi! Seventeen! What?!! I hope you have time for this... I was hiking the lone Pacific coast of Mexico a few decades ago and needed to know what lay ahead... about water availability, a sense of distance to my next goal, such senses of mine lacking being a north-woodsy Minnesotan. A young man appeared, a real ray of light, smiling like the sun. We gazed, pondered the "ahead". He answered my questions before, clothes on top of my head, I'd wade a mini mangrove swamp crawling with the beady eyes of near black crabs to continue on. His smile did not diminish as he nodded to the very straight and true house he had built using poles from local trees and with walls and roof of corrugated tin. He introduced me to his wife and their darling newborn. She stood, mother and child, framed eternally in my mind and in their glass-less window. Very shy. The shadows were her long concealing veil. Her smile though, and the new and sleepy eyes of their child -- all too a sunlit smile through the darkness the obscurity of my gazing, pondering -- something of that yearning to know the where, the availability of water. It's a different world and life there, yet in another sense it is not different. I was awestruck and expressed that, then asked a stupid question about how old he was. His smile seemed brighter than any sun as he said, "Fifteen".
My wife passed last year, but we had the opportunity to go to this very restaurant. I always think of that magical moment with her. It was surreal and fantastic.

CherryEM The film was shot in between September and October 2002. Scarlett Johansson was born in November 1984. She turned 18 a month after the wrap of the shoot, but yes, during the entire filming she was still only 17.
This movie perfectly expressed the subtle loneliness of being alone in foreign countries. I spent a month in Japan and it was a quirky mix of familiar western products, and unfamiliar eastern culture. I met a lot of people and didn't get to know anyone except other foreigners in the hotel bars.

Phenomenal movie! Very well made! I lived in Japan for three years some time ago and watching this movie brought back a parade of emotions. The various bumps and collisions with culture shock that Bob (Murray) encounters and the depiction of Japan are spot on with my experience. Another good movie with the same "American guy crash lands in Japan" theme is "Mr. Baseball" with Tom Selleck.
0:26 She pronounces "What are you doing here?" notably different than the woman in the hotel lobby earlier. She really wonders why he is there, while that other woman just ingratiates herself to a celebrity.
What many don't know is that Scarlett was 17 when she made this movie. She goes toe-to-toe with Bill Murray for two hours and never does she appear over her head. Yes, I think she's a beautiful women, but the girl has some serious acting chops. More impressive considering this movie is two characters and that's it.
The name of the bar is the New York Bar, at the Park Hyatt hotel in Shinjuku. It is my dream to visit and have a drink there one day, just like in this scene!

i cant believe she is 17 here
She is 19 not 17. Well, at least the movie came out in the year she made 19 years old.
+Filipe Pereira while the movie was filming she was seventeen...
+Squilliam Fancyson wasn't she 18?? Was she really 17? I've just turned 18 and can't believe she's younger than me here
CherryEM The film was shot in between September and October 2002. Scarlett Johansson was born in November 1984.
She turned 18 a month after the wrap of the shoot, but yes, during the entire filming she was still only 17.
Wow she looks so much older. Also in Match Point she must have been 19/20 when they shot that and she looks way older
I love the red lights of the Tokyo buildings.
one of my favourites movies, was surprised to know Mr Tarantino it rated so high
the best movie..it all just works
I love this movie so much.
she studied philosophy...of course she smokes.
This movie perfectly expressed the subtle loneliness of being alone in foreign countries. I spent a month in Japan and it was a quirky mix of familiar western products, and unfamiliar eastern culture. I met a lot of people and didn't get to know anyone except other foreigners in the hotel bars.
I don't find it depressing at all but uplifting and inspiring :)
The whole movie wouldn't happen if she hadn't make that smile on the elevator.
this is why i love philosophy....
+J IG Philosophy has all the answers. And then you need a bit of psychology and you're ready. I had a look at your profile out of curiosity, i guess you're interested in german language. Keep going, especially Schopenhauer (which is one of my favourites amongst many) is a delight in german, no matter how good accurate translators are there's always something getting "LOST IN TRANSLATION" ;-D
@@kingwithoutacrown1 Astrology has all the answers actually, you can read it through the lenses of psychology or philosophy though, if you are not a believer of the occult.
This is one of my top 3 favorite movies of all time.
So sweet and natural. Sofia got so much right in this film.
I will never forget the night first watching this, beautiful film, a pearl for me
Sofia Coppola: Cutto cutto cutto cutto cutto!!!! "Bill could you do the "what are you doing?" slower and with more intensity?" 😉
An incredibly cathartic film that sweeps you away. Wonderful.
The soundtrack is stellar, as well. 'Sometimes' is like a glowing, warm summer sunset across a neon city.
there is no paper on the straw when they change camera angles but there is paper on it before without here taking it away. MAGIC
0:05 just looking at Bill Murray's receiving hair line is giving me Iron Man's vibes 😉😄😂
came from Robert Mckee's book on dialogue.
Really need to watch this little masterwork again. Hard to believe Scarlett is only seventeen here.
One of my best and all time favorite movie 🎥 .
Same here
I always loved this movie, but I was 31 when it came out and I'm 50 now and it somehow hurts even more to watch now
This scene hits close to home. LOL
Honestly my favorite film.
I so feel her ! That’s what I am facing right now , sort of uncertainty, kind of did not decide what to do next
Masterpiece.
I went to Japan in 2015 and visited the New York Grill / New York Bar. It was magical. I have been back to Japan this year, I love it.
0:26 She pronounces "What are you doing here?" notably different than the woman in the hotel lobby earlier. She really wonders why he is there, while that other woman just ingratiates herself to a celebrity.
I watched this movie many many many times. ❤
Ever since i was very little. 🌟
HAHAHAH.. "il ... have a vodka tonic". - "what ever does the job, gets me drunk af.
the feeling that this movie conjures is fantastic. Feeling isolated in a foreign city.
The name of the bar is the New York Bar, at the Park Hyatt hotel in Shinjuku. It is my dream to visit and have a drink there one day, just like in this scene!
Brilliant movie. What a catharsis.
Watch this great movie when you are alone. Its very powerful.
I feel sad that Scarlett Johansson stopping playing roles like this one. This is where her true talent shines.
Right? Actors think that everyone wants to see them in super hero movies, but roles like this have so much more substance and longevity.
@@BackwoodsFilms Black widow is so flat and one dimensional, undeserving of her talents.
@@BackwoodsFilms I agree. Sadly this happens to so many stars. They start out doing art films with real substance and move on to blockbusters with big money. Its weird that she could almost be the Bill Murry character now. Churning out soulless films for money and becoming disillusioned.
