- "Does it get easier?" Bob (Bill Murray) and Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) discuss life, marriage, and having kids.
"The most terrifying day of your life is the day the first one is born . . . Your life, as you know it... is gone, never to return. But they learn how to walk, and they learn how to talk and you wanna be with them. And they turn out to be the most delightful people you will ever meet in your life."
Bob Harris (Bill Murray) and Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) are two Americans in Tokyo. Bob is a movie star in town to shoot a whiskey commercial, while Charlotte is a young woman tagging along with her workaholic photographer husband (Giovanni Ribisi). Unable to sleep, Bob and Charlotte cross paths one night in the luxury hotel bar. This chance meeting soon becomes a surprising friendship. Charlotte and Bob venture through Tokyo, having often hilarious encounters with its citizens, and ultimately discover a new belief in life's possibilities.

"Let's never come here again, cause it will never be as much fun" . Such a great line
Because memories can be smeared like lipstick by other memories 💋
She was a philosophy major, after all.
I felt that line
Exactly. Nostalgia. Memories 😊
"The more you know who you are and what you want, the less you let things upset you."
I love the shots where the romance between Bob and Charlotte are interpolated with the reflection of the city. The city is a representation of their relationship, and it's what makes the whole thing possible. Tokyo at once is a vastly connected city with it's subway system and at the same time due to it's large metro feel it's easy to feel completely lost and disconnected. It's that tension of connectedness and disconnectedness that brings Charlotte and Bill together. That feeling of being different and alien, and finding belonging in that very same feeling.
What I adore about this movie is there is a comfortable affection you keep wondering will develop into something romantic, but 20 years later I realize it's actually the love you have as a parent, wanting the best for someone and just enjoying being with them. It makes so much sense now.
I never get tired of this movie. So subtle in telling the actual story. The actual plot that is happening behind everything that happens in the varius scenes.
Two people - not drawn to each other in a classic love story. Not falling for each other. But two individuals that each have separate and different needs that are not fulfilled in their life.
She wants a companion, and a partner - someone that is there for her. Someone that will lend her a hand if she needs it - Like the Geisha in the park that was given a hand when walking up the stairs. He needs to feel needed - Not adorned or feel powerful or superior or anything like that. Just feel needed by someone for real.
And they arent really looking to satisfy their needs in each other. And they arent "falling in love". It isn't love or an affair they are looking for. They just find a source to their each individual need in an unexpected place and person, and now when they have found it they can't turn away.
This scene is the only one that is really outspoken when it comes to explaining their separate issues. But the rest of the movie is so beautiful in its subtlety, where this main plot - their seach for what they need - is never really expressed in words. They walk and they talk and they do things together and separately. But thats just side stories. The real plot is non spoken underneath every scen except in this one.
Brilliant movie with stelar acting and directing - i regularly re-watch it.
yea I may need to rewatch this....hadn't seen it since I was in my 20's when it first came out. Completely different movie as a middle aged, divorcee with actual life experience.
he keeps his distance with effort - she wouldn't if he changed - but he cares too much for her to take it in that direction - he loves her - but from a different time in his life - but he loves her fully and unconditionally - already
This is a movie delicacy. You watch it the first time you feel nothing, but then it grows on you and then the rest is history.
That opening 90 seconds of ARE YOU AWAKE soundtrack & getting up late in night, unable to sleep is basically the scene that defines a Overthinker Introvert😊
Such a wonderful movie. Thank you, Sofia.
This is on my shorter list of favorite movies when people ask 😊😌
Imovie name ? Please ❤️🥺👏

I wish i had someone who cared for me and told me that i'll figure things out
I hope you’re figuring things out x
Don't worry dude, you'll figure things out. Your caretaker. 😗
You'll find someone tomorrow. Maybe the next day. Or... Anyway, keep your heart open, and your soul searching, but not pushing. They will come along when you least expect it. Help others.
@robertbauer3419 a little karma goes a long, long way.
@@normsaunders4980 I'm not sure if you are applying that my comment to @lamecasuelas2 was me making fun of him somehow, but I assure you that wasn;t the case. I was sincerely trying to help/comfort him. I also wish you all the best in life with no karma or anything mean like that. Aloha from Chicago😀
Can’t believe it’s been this long since I realized the ending to the song rock + roll - Eden references this movie “the more you know who you are, and what you want..the less..things upset you”. i can die happy now :,)
This 🎥 is outstanding. Brilliant written and casting. Lol and best.
I think they fell in love during the karaoke scene when he’s singing more than this

"-they turn out to be the most delightful people you will ever meet in your life."
With all the comments I see, I have to watch this movie.
I love this movie it's Not In A Category ,my favorite kind . Regular situation movies can get boring .
Best scene of the best movie.
While visiting a couple of friends I brought a DVD of this movie to share with them. They thought it was an awfully boring movie. They just didn't get it. I guess I just don't get them.
Those aren't real people.
I mean, they are, but, you know...
Exellent movie
I like the movie
so beautiful
One of the most poignant and tender scenes in a movie !
bill murray is blinking independently - and is maybe blinking code
Italian language in Tokyo? Wtf? ❤
May 25th alt code is: KEEP RIDING
Should put this on 4K because it's terrible on all formats, both digitally and on physical disc
fun fact: scarlett johansson and bill murray were having a hard time getting along with one another, during filming of this scene.
Thank you. I think it shows!
💩💩💩 Incorrect.
Where does this information come from?
ah its shit getting old.
May 25th code is: ITS REAL
Fatima Yamaha - What's a girl to do
Its so unrealistic thst a young beautiful woman would want to hang out with a giy more than 30 years older than her. There is cute guys her own age everywhere ....so yeah...right. shre she wants to kick it with this old guy? I don't buy it. Nope
Its a movie, doesnt have to be realistic
Just tell us that you didn’t understand the movie.
He's rich
I don't think you understood what this film was about. It wouldn't have mattered if he was younger or older. That wasn't the point.
She is alone in a Japanese city. She's can't safely hang out with strangers who don't speak English. That's the constraint which produces the setup. It forces her to seek out less obvious Anglophone company such as Bill Murray, the fellow hotel guest. Moreover this is a married woman so wouldn't arbitrarily "hanging" with the local Tokyo male youth or "cute guys". Did you even watch the movie?
Also it's simply not true that early 20s women don't hang out with 50 year-olds. Some young women are actually... women. SJ's character here married young for example, implies a certain maturity.
He probably doesn't even have the stamina to do her.
53 isn't that old. I mean it's older but the pee pee should still be functional.
Watch the movie
You never shoud say "I'm too old" to read your first book ❤
@FirstLast-cd6vv He had the stamina to do the jazz chick.
Yo chill
