Briefcase Barbecue Review: Does This Folding Grill Work?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 вер 2024
- Today I'm testing out this unusual folding "briefcase barbecue" grill by Kikkerland to see how it works. I include my first failed attempt, along with my second try which went much better.

*Bought for my son. We have had one for years, works great. Can cook indirect and smoke meat. Done chicken, ribs, turkey, and the regular **MyBest.Kitchen** hot dogs and sausages. Excellent grill*
Imagine how ridiculous you’d look bringing that into the office and then at lunch it just transforms into a bbq.
Arvin ridiculous or genius?
To set up the fire alarm? Genius!
Yeah it'd be ridiculous spending the rest of the day cooking your lunch
ridiculous? I call it genius!
Me and a buddy I worked with used to bring a small camping grill to work every Friday and set it up in the parking lot to make hot dogs. We'd sit in our camp chairs and tailgate for our hour lunch. Pretty soon, other people asked if they could bring stuff to grill, including some managers, and eventually the company bought a full size grill and turned every Friday lunch into a Grill & Chill.
“It’s the size of two of my hands.” Just how many hands are you hiding from us James?
🤣
Ur comment reminded me of when people say, " I saw it with my own eyes." As if they could possibly see it with someone else's eyes...?!?? LOL
"Watcha carrying in your brief case?"
"BBQ"
"Oh you got lunch in there?"
*sets up grill* "BBQ"
That was clever😯😦
Arby's i got your meat "grabs crotch"
Lol!
This was the perfect set up. 😂😂

I'm weirdly a fan of this channel, even though we don't have most of these items in my country. But you are really articulate and informative so it's fun and entertaining to watch these videos. Great job.
Same here. I love his straight-to-the-point presentation.
I feel the same way. I don't think I would purchase the items that he reviews but I really enjoy watching him test them. :)
The Marshall's tag is so funny xD
maybe they sold stock that was leftover because in the link he posted it shows a bbq with another grill, thats not like the one in the video
What price is it on Amazon, i can't check. Marshalls is apart of TKMaxx (TJMaxx for 🇺🇸) and this is exactly the sort of whacky stuff they like to sell lol
@@Malandrin Nah, it was someone doing retail arbitrage.
@@Malandrin 40$ can buy something better (I have seen a BBQ on the side of the road rather get that )
@@somanyscientists4347 Absolutely correct! It's a fantastic way to make money.
I really appreciate your reviews and your style of reviewing products. Too many reviewers seem to be trying to make the products fail or are more concerned with being goofy and jokey. I actually learn about the products and have bought a couple of them based solely on your reviews.
'Its kind of hot, around 109F'

my apartment is always around 80 to 82 if i don't play videogames. whoever built this building didn't think to include AC but they did but in heating.
I love the cameos of all the other stuff you've reviewed.
Yeah, He has his own Freakin Reviews Cinematic Universe, lol.
"I'm going to show you my successes and my failures." This, in my opinion, is why you're the best reviewer on UA-cam. Keep up the good work brother, I'll keep watching.
I think the most interesting thing is that you print off other reviews and read them instead of using your phone lol
Reading a phone in that weather/lighting? I'd take paper over that for sure.

Most likely he writed down/printed the most significant reviews, sometimes you get very similar ones in a row.

The best portable grill i have ever seen is the "Son of Hibachi" grill.
Woah, never heard of that grill. Much better clamshell design than this one. But this grill does have the benefit of the cool look
I have one of those Son of Hibachi grills. Another good feature about that one is it can be used like an oven also. It’s awesome!
I was going to say "Just give me a cast iron Hibachi." I don't think I like the sound of "Son if Hibachi".
Im All about the cast iron lodge sportsman grill. Heavy but indestructible and will last several lifetimes
Yes I mentioned it in my comment the only reason we still don’t have ours is it we authorized some guys to come to our backyard to pick up scrap metal and they took our grill as well thoroughly pissed me off

Joke's on him, the pork chop was cooked medium rare.
Lol!
This is a possible scene in futur with more vegans take over
Cute but useless. Putting a grill on top of the starter chimney would've worked better, I suspect.
I think it'd be too hot. That starter is designed to act like a chimney. Those coals are burning really really hot. Too hot to grill on unless you like eating be charcoal.
You are an outside the box thinker.
All grills with have the mess at the bottom. It's so much easier to put some foil on the bottom. Awesome review. Thanks 👍
Looks like “deal or no deal”...lol
Marie Stark no deal. Lol
Great line, love it. Ahahaha 😀
But its a win all the time because bbq.
Meal or no meal.
Is that your final offer?

Jeremiah Bachmann LOL
You should try with coals for shichirin/hibachi grills (Japanese binchotan or “thaan” from Thailand) its petrified charcoal that's much denser, which results in a hotter longer burn, which in addition produces less smoke and flare-ups. Also, you can find foldable travel coal starters from a sporting goods/camping supply store (or Amazon) the grill would be perfect for yakitori or shish kabobs, the secret is thinly skewered meats. That chicken would have cooked better had you butterflied it, albeit you'd have to cook one at a time.
Only reviewer I watch! Does his homework. Reads instructions! Tried it more than once. And James is funny!
The Marshall's sticker most likely means someone bought a returns pallet of some kind, or got it at discount and was reselling it for profit.
Dude I don't even really care about you're reviews. But just watching your videos makes me so peaceful and happy, so thank you.
The reason your the best reviewer, in my opinion, is the systematic way you review things. Not just a few seconds or even few mins, you take your time and test things... good work.
“Its the size of two of my hands,” 😂😂 dam how many hands you got😭😭
Him: There's no "g" in grillin'
Me: "rillin?"
I think I have a few things to note on this grill to make it better:
1. Natural chunk or lump charcoal. It burns hotter, so you don't need as much, it's cleaner, and easier to light
2. You should be able to fit three of those regular (at least they look like) 1/4 pound burgers on that grill because the heat should still hit the third, edged burger, but I think the real solution is a lot more, smaller burgers. Perfect for sliders, or even some thinner burgers because they'll cook faster, so you can still get a lot on with a single charcoal load.
But after all that, I still don't see why anyone would use this over a propane or butane camping grill. Even a little backpacking stove, like an MSR PocketRocket or a Coleman Peak One, will be cheaper, easier to clean, and give you longer, more reliable burn time
I think it would be cool if you revisited this grill with the lump charcoal and some small burgers, but maybe I'm wrong and it'll be the same
You can't complain about the heat, you picked the day to film. 😂
Lol I stopped for gas this evening and saw a guy wearing the neck fans! I thought of you! I always enjoy your videos!!!😁
I love your videos because you give the product every opportunity to succeed. Most reviewers would’ve given up on the product after the first fail.
My Dad had one that was made in the 1960's.. I remember we went to the beach and he pulled it out. It was the size of a small suitcase made of aluminum. It had fold out legs, and you opened it up and it had a 30 x 20 grilling area. load it with charcoal and put the grate on it and grill away... Such memories! I miss you daddy!

This is easily my favorite video of all the many, many that you’ve done, and it’s quite funny too!
I wouldn’t necessarily blame Amazon, but I’d sure as hell go after the seller that was based on Amazon! Contact Amazon with a screenshot of the listing at $50 and the a photo of the Marshall’s tag on the box at $39.99. They might go after the seller for you. I’d also contact the seller and demand the difference.
This makes no sense. Actual people sell things on amazon, it’s not only amazon selling on there. So you want those actual people selling a $40 item for $40????? Just like EVERY business in the world, they need to make a profit, and trust me, after the fees on amazon, that seller probably BARELY broke even.
Matthew L, the seller didn’t buy at a supplier, they bought from a retailer. They proved it by leaving the retailer’s price tag on the item. They then marked the price up 25% plus likely charged a shipping/handling fee.
@@ItsJustLisa The seller most likely got the item from a customer return pallet or liquidation sale, not from going to Marshall's and buying it directly. As for the price, Marshall's may have marked it down if it wasn't selling quick enough (which might also be why it got sold in a bulk returns/liquidation pallet) but the Amazon seller researched the retail price and sold it at that. Still should have removed the tag but sometimes things slip through the cracks.
@@PheonixSunstar001 I don't know. After season sales usually have this kind of junk marked down at least 50%, usually even more. Either way, I bet the seller made at least double what they paid.
gotta crack up @8:59 “I’m gonna use my old neck fan from last year!. Ah, blows the nice warm air right in my face! I’m not sure that’s even better!”
I don’t even want one I just wanna watch you review it it’s entertaining
gay
Jeremiah Bachmann are you okay bro?
FlatEarthLife He’s okay, just happy.
I’d definitely get a little Coleman stove that uses the little 1L propane bottles over this. I feel like you could carry it just as easily, if not easier, plus you can carry more propane than charcoal easier.
For a really hot grill, skip the briefcase and just put a grill grate on the top of your chimney starter. Alton Brown did an episode on that once, and I think it got up to around 1000°F thanks to the convection currents.
That's pretty badass. Not going to lie.
Thanks for sacrificing your comfort to bring us reviews. 😆 Always enjoy your videos.
He says 109° is "kinda warm"? Sir, 109° is far past "kinda" warm! 😂😂
For building highest temperatures with a so small amount of charcoal you may have to work a bit on it: blow, turn, rearrange the coal, etc... Not just ignite and wait
If this bad boy had a cover, I think it'd be much more successful!
Put it in a normal size briefcase
The cleanup may be better on the suitcase grill if you put a small piece of aluminum foil on the bottom before you put the charcoal down. Also to keep the heat in, you might make a small tent over the food, and should help with cooking time. Maybe?? Regular grills do have lids. 😉
Reviewing a charcoal grill and not making it 'about the charcoal' is like reviewing a car and not making it about the engine!!
This thing is a 3 cylinder POS. Not enough charcoal to cook food to proper temps in less than 3 hours. I WENT TO THE ***DANGER ZONE***
Love the channel! You definitely deserve more subscribers!
My scouts used to make pizza ovens out of cardboard boxes, a thing we learned about charcoal is that you get about 25 degrees fahrenheit out of each briquette. So you might have been getting more heat off of a rock then the grill the first time.
You picked the best day to do this grilling only 108 degrees. Then again it is hot everywhere right now, damn near 100 in Cleveland. Good review as per usual.
Lmao at the Marshalls tag that came from a rookie reseller
Love the vids you deserve way more subs
Keep up the good work
You honestly made me laugh out loud during this video, great video :)
It's perfect for those business meetings in the deep woods.
You should've lined to charcoal tray with foil
The Marshall's tag being less than what you paid is funny lol
When he put the neck fans on...Ultimate Dad Mode Engaged! LOL
It's 111°in AZ today so I feel you... It's hot outside!!.... It's supposed to be 117° by Sunday!!
I saved Phoenix, AZ as a city in my Weather App even tho I live all the way in Connecticut just bc im usually amazed how hot it is over there. Idk how you guys do it, bravo 👏🏽
Well, i mean, it is the North American Desert. If you think that's bad, try Death Valley! Lol
47° for the rest of the world. That's crazy!!
Wow! You can keep that! We are good with our 94* on Sunday, nice and hot! 😃Your weather is Not hot it's called: Scorching Weather 😃😃😃+😃
Stay Cool! 😃🏖
"Ahhh feel that warm air in my face" 😂😂😂😂
A charcoal chimney starter defeats the purpose but without one you can use regular charcoal and drizzle a little bit of cooking oil to get it going.. I dont use matchlight or self lighting charcoal but there have been times i have cooked at my moms house and didnt have my chimney so i use oil.. Woros better than charcoal lighter fluid...
Just a tip James with a charcoal chimney if it is windy you can drizzle a bit of oil on the newspaper and crumple it up to get it goin good. Chimney is definately the best way to go
One thing to help is you put a paper towel throw the charcoal and then lit the paper towel. It is a great way to light charcoal even on a full size grill.
He said “it’s the size of two of my hands” like he has more than two of them 😂😂😂
Nothing can beat a Firebox for a portable grill. You can keep feeding it to prolong your cooking time, and it folds, cleans and transports better than anything else out there. Been using one for nearly 8 years now for cross country motorcycle camping trips.
i have a fold down bbq that i got from tesco and it was shit the coals just wouldn't light until i went at it with a drill and the extra air flow made a world of difference and now its my go to for camping and festivals
109 outside... Let's fire up the grill!
Ive got one thats the same concept built about the same way, works better to use a charcoal chimney to start the coals. Using probably more then 8 coals. just like that, nevermind lol. Just suprised how many people have no idea about charcoal chimneys
This contraption is very cute. Thanks for doing the review.
Freakin Reviews "like Gilligan's Island out here" ;) another t-shirt for the mech section.
still waiting on "dip with authority" :)
Kinda wish its a lil bit bigger, i love the concept of putting every parts that comes with it on one container when storing, i have portable grill, the thing is after using it we put all the parts back on its original carton box, which is bad since paper get worn out over time, metal container seems will last longer that paper.
"cute can only get you so far in life"....... *Looks at Bailey*. I think Bailey would disagree. :P
Thank you for the review and tips. I got the briefcase grill as a gift and am putting it in my camping gear just in case....
Dude your house must be fun as hell. You just walk in and there's all this awesome crap just EVERYWHERE.
I love how u always throw in a product in theme with what you are currently trying out when you can.
Thanks for the review! I count on you for my reviews! Lol
Cute🎒🔥 Fun to see you incorporating previously reviewed products in your vids
Did you review that chair yet?? Whats it called ?
Yes, it's in this video: ua-cam.com/video/8iD9Y592PI8/v-deo.html
Thanks for asking about that. I'll add a link in the description in case others want to know!
Freakin' Reviews it's just a huge collapsible cup. My grandmother had one that I played with as a child....may have broken it. I know I broke her retractable tape measure.....so many "new" ideas are based on old favorites.
I think of this more of a survival grill for 1 person who is going to use sticks for heat. Gets cold? Add more sticks. Not enough space? It's just you. It's perfect for that.
If you drill a couple of holes around the charcoal box, the charcoal will get more oxygen thus generate more heat. The downside is that more ashes will spill out through those holes.
Love the small Napolean grill we got. Heats up so hot and fast the lid blistered. It's not as tiny as that though, and does need propane, and can take abit to cool down, but is more than enough for a family of five
This guy has such good energy. Great video!👍
Missed what this cost but it would be hard to beat the portable butane stoves. They're about $14 at Asian supermarkets and the cans of fuel are about $4. So for under $20 you get a totally portable gas stove you can take anywhere and use with regular frying pans. Hell, I have an electric kitchen but prefer cooking on gas, so I use a butane stove in my kitchen every time I cook. It's one of the best gadgets I've ever bought.
I think it can be bigger and still be a normal-sized briefcase. Like a lot of things on Amazon, it looks bigger in photos than it actually is, and that's the intent.
That would be great for camping. Light and compact
I'd say it's for a single person out camping. Cooking 2 burgers then having to swap out the charcoal. If you plan on cooking something else. Seems like a pain. Should be able to hold more heat in the metal of the grill. But I guess that's the con you have to live with. For it to be light weight and portable. Looks built to last one season also.
It looks like you could cook 4-6 sausages on there for sandwiches. But if I were to design a briefcase grill, it would be the size of a briefcase! Even at twice that size, it would still be light and compact, but more flexible.
I think subconsciously part of the reason I watch is because I know you do the full review of the product(if not in segments). Also I agree that’s really a bad look for someone to ship you the product with the deal they got.
What I would do with that thing is I would take the charcoal starter, take the grill out of the briefcase set it on top of the charcoal chimney and cook whatever you are cooking right in top of the starter use the case to store my utensils. You may be only able to cook burgers one at a time but they will be cooked through very quickly and because of the quick cooking they will be more juicy.
If i had to use it while camping I'd probably carry a couple cans of sterno to put in the charcoal tray for heating other things but there's beter more compact stoves for sterno.
A friend of mine uses a cotton ball dipped in petroleum jelly and lights it to start a fire and it works great.
YES another review wooooo. I’m dropping everything an watching the review can’t wait to see the results. 👍
There's a Marshall's tag because it came from an Amazon reseller. These are third party sellers on Amazon. This particular one wasn't keen enough to remember to remove the original tag from where they purchased the item.
There are special rocks you can add to the charcoal tray to help keep the heat. The people the only used 8 or so nuggets more than like had filled the tray with some of those.
You should have used lumped charcoal as it gives off more heat and burn time is shorter. Briquettes burn longer but lower heat, good for slow cooking.
The seller found a way to unload their item and make $10. Good for them. Not Amazon’s fault but they could have removed the tag. As always, I love your reviews. Thanks for suffering in the heat for us.
thats a really really good idea. if you wanna grill for your own or for you and your best friend, you simply grab your grill case and youre good to go
Such a trooper. Thanks for sharing!
You earned every bit of Adsense on this video cause i couldn’t handle the heat out here the other day and you grilled!!!!
You brought up really good points in that debrief after you unboxed it. Regarding the charcoal thing, for me it was one of things where I didn't know the error of my ways until a solution was presented.
Using a cheap 15$ chimney, I can light any number of charcoal in 2 minutes using a wad of paper boom 6 minutes in you got the right idea haha I spoke too soon
I’ve got a gas grill that packs up almost as small but it lays horizontal providing substantially more cooking surface. It cooks six steaks or eight medium burgers no problem. At full open it’s too hot but cranked up halfway it’s perfect every time. I prefer gas anyway for the uniformity and convenience. I have a chip tray for smoke flavor. We’ve done side by side blind taste tests against a (self proclaimed) charcoal aficionado with several participants, and the consensus was 50%, no difference (much to his dismay).
I use 16-20 pieces of charcoal. Perfect grilling for 2 people. Or if grilling hot dogs you can do 8 at a time easily. I take this with me when I go fishing.
in the link you posted about the site of the seller it shows another grill thats like a woven pattern and not like the striped one you showed in your video, so I think that maybe you got the old design and thats why it was cheaper
