"Smoke gets in your eyes," is about a "beautiful flame" as a metaphore for a love affair. The fumes from cigarettes are nothing to do with it.

Up in a house full smoke lucky to be alive but my parents werent so lucky plus aunts uncles and brother in law all died from lung cancer or related diseases it was hell watching them slowly suffocate when the oxygen bottle ran out self inflicted death wtf is wrong in this country

Yes, it was just a time, for those of all old enough to remember it. Other then watching some old flims or old cigarette ads you need a time machine. Cigarettes and smoking are just incompatible with the 21st century.

The thousands and thousands of convenience stores in this country sell millions of cigarettes to mostly poor people every hour of every day. The poorer parts of town are thick with convenience stores. Convenience stores are rare near wealthy neighborhoods. They’re not making their money off of gasoline, which has very low margins. A $10/day habit is tough when you make $500/wk. A large percentage of the cost of purchasing cigarettes is government taxes, making poor people the largest payers of sales taxes in the country.
I gave a neighbor a lift recently and she fired up a Newport cigarette ..OMG ! Those STINK BAD ! I asked her to please not smoke & was happy to put it out..BUT the Smell. How anyone could Inhale that is Nuts to think about.
American womens' voices were piched much higher back then, and much less of a croak. Perhaps all that smoking had something to do with it? (No)
You should hear the difference in Lucille Ball's voice going from the 50s to the 60s. By the 60s she sounded croaky and I put it down to the cigarette smoking she did.
