  • One of the most famous television advertising campaigns in U.S. history, judge for yourself what made these TV commercials so popular. The famed Leo Burnett Agency targeted women in their marketing campaign. Being independent, stylish, confident and liberated meant...they smoked Virginia Slims. These vintage advertising commercials are offered here for study. Although this 1968 advertising campaign is entertaining, smoking is highly dangerous to your health. Some facts: Cigarette smoking causes more than 480,000 deaths each year in the United States. This is nearly one in five deaths. Smoking causes about 90% (or 9 out of 10) of all lung cancer deaths. More women die from lung cancer each year than from breast cancer. Transferred from 16mm film.

I think that's a great point, the ads made smoking glamorous in these commercials in the 60's. Today, the dangers of smoking take away a lot of the "glamorous" aspect, and someone lighting up a cigarette today is not considered "glamorous" any more.
