In this step by step acrylic paint tutorial I will teach you how to paint a koi fish. As in all of my tutorials we will work with a limited palette using only the three primary colors plus black and white. This keeps the lesson simple and easy to follow along with when learning how to mix all of your own colors.
I would be so grateful if you subscribed to my channel!!
I would also love to hear from you. Questions, advice, tips to share, requests for other tutorials....anything you have on your mind! Please leave me a comment. And I will respond back. :)
If you've ever painted along with me, PLEASE send me pics! I would loooove to see them. I may even showcase them at the end of one of my videos, if you're okay with that. If you prefer that I don't mention your name or show your photo, just let me know. You can tag or message me on instagram or Facebook @DebbieAvouxStudio or email me at DebbieAvoux@yahoo.com .
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR WATCHING!!!
Have an amazing day!
Debbie :)

In case no one said it today......You're fabulous! Thank you for this video!!
First of all, WOW. This is so beautiful. Watching this, I was really struck with how generous you are, sharing your time and your expertise, doing everything in real time, not speeding up the video; letting us see you mix paint, correct things; even letting us hear your little guy barking and snoring! Lol. I’m fairly new at this, and this looks kind of challenging, but I’m going to try it next. Thank you so much, if I think it’s “share worthy”, I will send you a pic. Again, thank you!
Thank you so much Ramona! I hope you do give it a try!! And I look forward to seeing it, because I’m sure it will be “share worthy”! 😃
I just came across this. I love painting and drawing koi fish and this painting is absolutely beautiful and I can't wait to paint along with you.
Ok. 2nd comment...just finished watching (I always paint after the show)
1st...I just love hearing the clickety clack of Poets paws running across the floor. Having a dog that insists on being on my lap both during tutorial watching & painting...I totally get it...my little Chewey, 8 -...7lb yorkie, just knows when I'm getting into the art mode...& won't be loving up on him...
2nd...Before you highlighted your River rocks after your dark wash...they looked exactly like a massive group of Moon Jellyfish...as someone who absolutely loves jellyfish...I may just have to try going that route on 1 occasion...only highlighting them to look like jellies instead of rocks!
Lastly...always such a delight...to see that I am not alone...in turning one's dining room into a studio or painting for hours on end, changing things only to end up like it did in the beginning as well as...gettin it done...while I paint...(laundry, dishwasher etc)...thanks again for another great show
Thanks Beth! Maybe I should do a Jellyfish tutorial?? 😀
@@DebbieAvouxStudio uhhhh... yes? I'll be there!! My username on alot of sites is Jellygurl!!!
Cant believe i watched all of it but it was worth it, thank you
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and time! I painted the koi over the course of a few days and it came out great! I can't wait to try out more!
im a beginner who followed a few of your tutorials and my family thinks im some sort of genius artist ..of course i told them they're references but they're still impressed
Haha! I love it!! 😀
Just got the alert...jumped out of Ginger Cooks live to watch you...been anxiously waiting...yesterday was even thinking about sending you a shot of that Japanese glass buoy we chatted about but still have not taken pictures. Will do 2moro...p.s....I just shared as well...🤞🤞🤞Hope you get the bid...you make the world more beautiful...which it needs kinda bad right now...
You're awesome! Thanks so much for your support Beth I appreciate it more than you know. :)
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I finally got up the courage to paint this one. I love it so much. Really appreciate you taking the time to do this.
Thank YOU Falayla!
I really like to your paintings❤️❤️❤️
Thanks Nevini
Hey Debbie - welcome back! KOI are fantastic art subjects, thanks for this one 👍
Of course!
I love the way you managed to create the transparency of the water by painting the pebbles on the bottom and the shadow from the water lily leaves. 😍
Thank you 😊
Beautiful as usual. I love how thorough you are with your teaching techniques. I actually found the courage to paint my favorite trees - palms - after watching one of your videos. My dad has been painting for over 40 years and he thought my trees were amazing. Thanks to you! I would love to see you do a painting on Bromeliads. I can't figure out how to even draw them to get started. 🤔😊
Thank you! So glad your dad found your trees amazing. I love that. I’ll add Bromeliads to my list. 😀
Grew up in Iowa, saw this in summer frequently.

@@DebbieAvouxStudio Just emailed it.
Hoping for a new tutorial soon :) Always enjoy your videos!
Thank you. I’ll be doing a tutorial of a bumble bee next.
Debbie, when you do large murals like that building or a wall in a room, I assume you don't use Basic or other tube paint. So can you do a speed video of a wall mural and explain what equipment you use and how to chalk it out. I want to try doing sea turtle ocean scene on one of my bedroom walls but I've never done this before. I'm a self taught (using UA-cam) 72 yr old novice, so I need all the advice you have. Thank you.
Hi Debbie
Still hoping to see a paint tutorial on the Pepper Tree you did for the young fella who passed away
God Bless
I do have that one on my list. I’ve just been swamped with a large art project for work lately. Sorry it’s been so long. :/
So gorgeous. May I ask how your paint stays wet and workable for so long. I use the craft acrylic paint in small bottles. Is that why?
Can you draw a dream catcher please?
Is your favorite color teal? Or something in the blue, green, cool family?
Haha Yes I guess it is. Do you ask that because every one of my paintings seems to have that color in it?
@@DebbieAvouxStudio Yes!!! LOL! My favorite colors are those cool tones. That's what drew me to your art, I love koi fish, ocean waves, beachy vibes, all of that. I can't wait to paint the koi fish. The colors pop!
Woow!!!
I also draw, in 3d
if interesting ,☝

You are gone for 5 months already, we really hope you'd come back very soon. Love
A quick question, if we painted the koi with respect to the light coming from right side... Shouldn't the shadows have been on the left of the koi and leaves in the water? No criticism just genuinely confused as shadows are very confusing for me🤦🏻♀️
No criticism taken. I appreciate the question. I’ll be honest with you, I painted this so long ago, I don’t remember exactly what I said during this tutorial regarding which direction the light was coming from. But in looking at this design it looks as though I created the light source coming from above more than specifically the right or left side. The highlights are on top of the fish so I see shadowing on each side of the koi’s body. There can be multiple light sources in any given situation especially in water with all of the reflections so you have a bit more freedom with this one.
But to answer your specific question - typically yes, I would have shadows on the opposite side of where the light is hitting.
I hope this answer made sense. :)
Thank you so much! Lighting always confuses me! I have thoroughly enjoyed watching your tutorial and have been painting ever since. All my work ends up being digital and it was so lovely cominf back to beautiful messy paints. You made it look like so much fun! ❤
I’m so happy you enjoyed it!! 😊. Thank you for your support. ❤
Your not painting anymore? What's the deal! I know...Joe Biden has me down as well...;-)
Haha! I've just been really busy with my real job. Gotta pay those bills! lol
What is going on? An Insider joke?
@@Allie-ck2lj Yes...Joe B is a joke!
