FINALLY someone that shows the linkages for the 8HP Briggs & Stratton i got mounted on a big tiller! Thank you thank you so much, my search is finally over after a few years of no luck..
@@5Tractorguy Glad you didn't delete! I had EXACTLY the same setup and questions about whether it was assembled right on the ancient log splitter I just acquired. Your video helped a lot. But I've still got a question: what makes the governor arm (and thus throttle plate link) go up? The spring pulls it down, and when the bell crank rotates the spring tension loosens, but there's nothing pulling the arm up. In your video it just pops right up - but I can't tell why!
Things are a pain in the ass sometimes, or at least mine is. It's an 84 wheel horse gt1100 8 speed (main reason I like it is its lightweight, drive/deck setup is simple/sidemount, and clutch and brake are on seperate pedals/basically a manual tranny setup). Ran great for a few years then coil gen went bad, replaced it. Got trash in fuel (or just crappy gas), dismantled, cleaned tank and replaced all the lines. Then wiring went bad, rebuilt the entire harness. Then carb problems started.. mostly due to worn bushings on throttle shaft, went ahead and rebuilt the whole carb and replacing bushings. Now I have loping/surging idle and haven't the faintest clue how to get rid of. valves, gaskets, linkage, governer adjustment, mix adjustment, etc. all good. Runs fine on a cold start for a few minutes then starts surging. That or I tweak carb adjustments for 30 minutes till it runs smooth, then put it in gear or turn deck on...surging again... Never worked on a mower that's irked me as much as this thing is doing now, much more and I'll go postal and take the .500 smith to it...
I replaced my carb on my snowblower with the carb and governor setup here, I can get it to start with a prime but i dies immediately, the Main Speed Adjustment Needle Low Speed Adjustment Needle are both 1 1/2 turns, start at full throttle full choke when cold. will not start at any other throttle setting. please help?
Two questions I have a similar or exact Briggs and Stratton 8 hp that I'm using for a go cart how do I make a kill switch for it and how do I remove the governer?
I have that set up on my 73 B&S 8hp but with a throttle cable instead of the lever. Not running, the throttle butterfly stays wide open so the idler screw doesn't touch bottom. It isn't a cable adjustment, I disconnected it to be sure. Would the governor arm be out of adjustment?
I have the same motor but it is on a lawn tractor... Question. It wont run when I throttle down... It runs on choke When I slide down to rabbit it pops and the closer to turtle I get it just dies,.. I let it warm up I cleaned the carb.. Governor seems to be working it trys to keep motor running... Help ... Thanks
I have an 8hp brigs and stratton mtr on a snow blower. The trotle plate assembly plate looks similar to the one you show in this video however mine has a rod(used to acelerate and declerate the motor) that goes to the top of the motor.. My acelerator rod and spring have come off their mounting points. Can you show me how and where to reconnect these parts? Thx
Good video, I have an engine that is missing the throttle lever and screw that holds it. It looks like the end of it is riveted to a plastic square piece and slides back and forth but I can't see it that well in the video.
I have a Briggs and Stratton 8HP Throttle and Governor Setup similar to the one shown in your video, howver mine have an acelerato rod that goes up to the top of the motor. Can you shown me hopw to reconnect the spring and the acelerator rod. Thx
On a go cart i just bought this needed to be replaced and the new one has a black square plastic piece in the center and im not quite sure what thats for it also does not have the long rectangle piece you were pulling on am i missing things? also I'm not sure where exactly the actual throttle cable goes. I've never worked on go carts or any other small engines like this.
It slides with a bit of resistance so the governor will not pull it back. This one has the screw with the spring so you can adjust tension on the sliding lever.
My friend has a Ruston Hornbury 2YDA 15 KVA Generator Visutector protection unit ZV AC 4A .Teddington Autocontrols 415 volts what I want is the wiring diagram ...Can any one help
I have this same engine on my gocart i just bought and i think its missing a few pieces not sure though. And the piece that keeps the engine from idoling is always in the on position to when i start the engine instead of it idoling like normal its trys to take off so i have to hold it down in order to idol. Any fix / Solution to this? Thanks!
What actuates the gov arm? I have an 8hp B&S snowblower from 1979. The arm pivots on a shaft that goes into the front of the crankcase? What actually moves that arm?
The arm is moved by weights inside the engine. Centrifugal force moves the weights when the crank spins; they push against a lever (inside) that rotates the rod on which the governor arm is mounted.
How do you adjust it? my 14.5hp briggs i/c quiet shoots flames and sounds like a derby car lol - im guessing when i pulled evry thing off to clean the carb / bowl / jets - that i had to have done something wrong lol - the rpms are wayyy up there - oh i put a new spring in and that's it - any help appreciated! (huskee i/c 14.5 briggs and stratton Quiet)
New spring might be too tight? That would be my guess, could be holding the throttle wide open no matter where you put the throttle lever. Could try the original again or stretching the new one a bit.
You should probably readjust the main jet needle at the bottom of the carb. The governor should not be able to overrun the engine like that with the main jet properly adjusted. Turn it clockwise to reduce the maximum amount of fuel provided to the mixture.
It's a grounding wire for automatic shutoff at closed throttle, which goes to the ignition coil located above the flywheel. It is bonded there with the wire going to the on/off switch.
choke issue, 7Hp briggs updraft won't run with choke on. Take it off it runs out of fuel and stops. New hose, clean tank, (was clean) carb off and cleaned every thing, the tube, port, What could it be?????
Could be a sticky float needle? Maybe the line is getting air-bound? I assume you have the original gas tank mounted on the side? I know sometimes you have to put a good 1" of gas in the bottom to get it to flow to the carb.
On this engine full choke should be all the way down. Most carburetors have an arrow with "choke" cast right into the side pointing in the correct direction.
+5Tractorguy thanks! I'm messing with one like this that is really old. I think the indicator was on the plastic piece that went on the lever, but it isn't on there any more.
Not off hand. I've never seen the little plastic insert sold anywhere before. Best bet may be a parts engine or finding a control bracket with one still one it.

This saved me - thanks for posting - was stuck setting up a carb rebuild and linkage

And to think I was going to delete these governor videos a while back. Glad it helped Billy.

Thank you for posting this. I have been pulling my hair out with a Flo-Jet (1970 vintage)
Thanks for posting this. I spent about 2 days wondering why the engine wasnt working right. i had the spring in the wrong hole.

can the govener spring be too tight or loose to work

Where does the throttle cable get attached?
where you get that fancy bracket at my fingers are dented by ducking with a half hamburgered linkage set up.

You bet Phillip, glad to help.
How do you set up the throttle cable for a mini bike situation?
I need to know how to disable the Governor just like on the predator engine
Hey how do you put a kill switch on one of these 8hp b&s
where can i get the linkage going to the carb from the governor

How do you agust a Tecumseh10hp governor?
how much oil goes
Governor linkages are a pain. Ive hav a few engines fix bodged linkages, they never work properly.
Just figured this coment thing on k 181 running issue. 4 carbs and problem mechanical or electric
i need a close up i am having trouble
Very helpful
During normal operation is that front sliding piece screwed down tight so it doesn't slide horizontally? THANKS
It slides with a bit of resistance so the governor will not pull it back. This one has the screw with the spring so you can adjust tension on the sliding lever.

OK
It looks just like the one you show on the video but in the partlist it is a spring called 260478 spring link.
I cant see this spring on your setup
I needed to know where the little spring goes, thanks
It goes to the Governor's + Back of bracket, like in the video.
Detailed: Governor Linkage = 1st Hole - Governor goes up to Air / Idle and 2nd Hole = Governor Spring and Hook to Bracket.

we're does the red wire go I am missing one on the 8 horse that you can see under the carb

You didn’t tell how to adjust it
do you know where i can find a rebuild kit for the carb?

Go on line and buy a carb for 15-20 bucks

I did all of the above, finally took it to my small engine guy, he said it was a bad needle valve. So it's working now. Thanks so much for the help
Is full choke with the lever up or down? Thanks

What is the wire attached to the plate?
Ground wire for the ignition coil.
