Yes, that's definitely a water-cooled unit you have there and you are right about the oil supply and return, dead easy to plumb it all in. You will need some sort of UN- -LOADER VALVE to turn the compressor off after it's reached its working pressure, your local truck supply store should be able to help with that, you need it to cut out at about 125 p.s.i. otherwise, it will just keep on running until something goes bang (not good!) I have extensive knowledge of air brake systems that's how I know so, If you have any questions I am willing to answer Waylon.
Excellent comment Keith. All very valuable information Especially the governor to control the operating pressures ( cut in, cut out or on, off if you will) . The need for tank drains might be worth mentioning. I sure Ken will research this further. I spent 46 years as a truck driver with 21 of those as an owner/operator so i accidentally learned a bit of air systems. Thanks again for putting up Your comment, i hope Ken see it.
As a past Buick Motor Division mechanic and a retired LEO, I won't unsubscribe, I enjoy the GMC V12 a lot. Thank you for your videos and I would like to visit some day from Ohio.
Ken I’m an old diesel mechanic, but just do the heavy truck transmissions and rears now, that compressor is oil and water operated . The oil goes in like you said on the higher fitting pressure side drains on bottom. The water goes thru the head on top on each end. The air has inlet and outlet like you seen , that outlet you seen was oily is because the compressor is passing oil thru the rings evidently, will probably still work but with age like any piston ring problem. The side I think on the front edge is a 2 bolt hole set up with one larger hole in the middle where the regulator bolts up to control the air pressure and keep it from running all the time . There is two lines that will come off the regulator one used for gauge in cab the other is pressure side to regulate the amount of pressure in tank. It’s an old Bendix compressor like a lot of old school busses had for years. I will try send you a picture link so you can see how it is hooked up. If you want some help let me know I will send you my number and try walk you thru the set up , it’s very simple and be glad to talk to you. Any questions let me know thanks!!
Atta boy! Got him started on the correct path. Can't call myself a truck mechanic, however drove log trucks in Upper Michigan for over 20yrs and trust me please, as a driver of a Michigan log truck you do over the years, learn how the air system operates. Don't forget to explain how the governor (regulator) system functions! The port in the governor that unloads it, has to either be vented or plumbed into the purge valve on the air dryer.
Geez Waylon; I made a reply to Gearswapper's comment that will explain better, and I have an "old" Bendix air dryer you could have, I'd give it to you but it would cost more to ship it to you than a rebuilt one costs at a truck shop. The air dryer would be unnecessary in your application, but if ya plumbed a valve out of a "whoopy cushion" or a "cazoo" into the dump valve, it would let a fart or blow the cazoo every time the compressor kicked out,,,,lol.
Snow gets up into radiator at times and will cause some steam while plowing, as long a temp gauge is normal everything should be good. Happens with my jeep up here in Alaska.

Its cold here in Oak Harbor,WA. Hit 5 degrees Thursday morning. Great video sir. The air tanks are awesome. That compressor looks like one my Dad had on one of his engines in a shrimp boat to run the main wench and it was water cooled.
I like the way those tanks are looking! Are you going to mount the horn on the roof? Ok ok you were right...yellow wasn't a good idea Hahahaha. I like that you did your intro whilt that poor guy stood out in the cold shoveling the vehicles off. You sure do have dedicated employees! RPeek would be proud of the plowage footage!
That is an old Bendix Air Compressor. Definitely water cooled. You probably know it needs a governor. Run the lines in hydraulic hose due to vibration. otherwise, you will be dealing with lines cracking. With that fog horn, people will know when your ship comes in....😂
If you have a western plow with the cable operated controls, put some zip ties on the cables between the hood and the pump. Don't clip the tails on them then after the truck is warmed up and the snow is melting off the truck water running down the cables will drip off the zip tie tails and keep your pump controls from freezing up.
Yessir, it got cold here in Kansas City. I woke up to -9F (-22C)! The Jeep was a little stubborn to start. One of the things you'll need for the foghorn is an air actuated valve. I'm not sure if that compressor will do what you need it to do, if you run it backwards. Some compressors have a reed/check-valve system, that only allows air to flow one way (with proper rotation). I do think you have got the water inlet/outlet figured out; and the pressurized oil line in/out figured out. It will be interesting to see if it works backwards! Leavenworth, WA isn't that far away from Wenatchee, I'm glad you're not getting the -20F weather! Stay warm. I hope your pipes thaw soon!
Yes you are correct about water cooled and the oil flow never tryed reverse rotation you will also need a governor to stop pumping at 120 psi and an air dryer should have a pop off valve for 130 psi
That there is a bendix tri-flo 500 it is water cooled and the oil in the fitting is possibly from the rings being worn out in the compressor. Also get a D-2 air governor to regulate the air pressure
Cool Waylen. Good morning to everyone this Sunday morning. Remember everyone through the Good and the uncertain times of the future. Remember Jesus Christ is the answer through it all. !! ✝️👍🙏💪
The three holes up front is for the Govenor it will shot the compressor off at 120 PSI most compressors on semi's are gear driven. haven't seen one of thows for years. The govenor will also will make the air dryer perge. Yes I drive a semi for work. You may want to look it to air dryer system.
Ha Ken . A 12V solenoid Valve would work great for the fog horn and make it easier to plumb up . Just a thought ... Sorry to disagree with Mr Heavy Chevy but the compressor will not work running backwards . The reed valves in the head only function in one direction . I may be wrong but you will find out ...
Fog horn air compressor heavy duty trans dual wheels v twelve heavy duty frame, can't wait to see just how heavy the finished duty dozen is... better have huge fuel tanks.
It may not matter , and you have plastic pipe , but we always parked the plow trucks and let the blade down on a few pieces of wood . That way it is never frozen to the ground . It may not happen there , but i have had a few freeze to the ground . But that as you know will not help the cold fluid in them .
it didn't stick to the ground..it wouldn't drop.. I used napa oil too.. could be moisture like you say.. If I had that stinkin' red truck out.. i could park it inside!
its supposed to be inside but I cant get that stinkin red truck out! everything I have in the parking shed I'm not willing to take out.. my impala vs the plow truck.. well.. the impala wins every time!!
It gets coolant and is oiled from the engine. You DON'T need as much air as that thing puts out!! What ya using for air supply on your bagged rides. Default is high range on that trans. Just enough air to hold range selector "switch" in low range.
It's a Bendix compressor & yes they have a water cooled head. You will need a type 2 air governor on one of the unloader valve ports & the other one will need to be blocked off plus the governor will need a reference line to the tank to operate. It's probably oily in the air port from lying down but id it doesn't clean up when you run it the rings could be bad.
I appreciate the info. would you be willing to exchange emails with me and maybe advise me If I have questions about the installation? you can reach me @ coatesgrafting@gmail.com
When it warms up, you need to change the fluid in your plow. Somehow, someway, water will get into the fluid over time and freeze. Meyers makes this very expensive very thin fluid that has anti-freeze chemicals in it, but I never used it. I just flushed it out after several years and used Dexron trans fluid. It will be a little sluggish with this fluid when you first start out, but that will go away as you use the plow.
Yes, that's definitely a water-cooled unit you have there and you are right about the oil supply and return, dead easy to plumb it all in. - 37 eh? I dont think so! haha the record low for Hot Springs AR was -11 in 1910
Yessir, it got cold here in Kansas City.
I want to watch your video right now, but I'm still at work until after noon.
See you then😅
As far as Josh is concerned, he is ALWAYS on the wrong side of the door.
Cool man I love it looks great
That there is a bendix tri-flo 500 it is water cooled and the oil in the fitting is possibly from the rings being worn out in the compressor.
Thanks for sharing
Fog horn air compressor heavy duty trans dual wheels v twelve heavy duty frame, can't wait to see just how heavy the finished duty dozen is... better have huge fuel tanks.
It may not matter , and you have plastic pipe , but we always parked the plow trucks and let the blade down on a few pieces of wood . That way it is never frozen to the ground . It may not happen there , but i have had a few freeze to the ground . But that as you know will not help the cold fluid in them .
Wonders if the plow oil has any moisture in it . We ran snow plow oil from Napa , and i do not remember having to many cold oil issues
it didn't stick to the ground..it wouldn't drop.. I used napa oil too.. could be moisture like you say.. If I had that stinkin' red truck out.. i could park it inside!
That is a cool little compressor
First real cold spell we have had in a long time. Is that horn going up between the tanks?
Awesome cool cool 😎 👍 👌
Compressors on bigger trucks are water cooled. If it was me, I would find a way to put my snow plow under roof.
its supposed to be inside but I cant get that stinkin red truck out! everything I have in the parking shed I'm not willing to take out.. my impala vs the plow truck.. well.. the impala wins every time!!
Townspeople are gunna shit when you stroll thru town tooting your horn!
I do believe that is a gravity feed oil return system back to the motor
It gets coolant and is oiled from the engine.
You DON'T need as much air as that thing puts out!!
What ya using for air supply on your bagged rides.
Default is high range on that trans.
Just enough air to hold range selector "switch" in low range.
The fog horn should be on Darth Grader
T a l l deck Chevy's 366 and 427 have a mount on the Block for that compressor to fasten to
I think it looks kool
I had problems with a over heating plow truck it was due to the plow retricting air flow to the grille but it was only when traveling with the plow up
It's a Bendix compressor & yes they have a water cooled head. You will need a type 2 air governor on one of the unloader valve ports & the other one will need to be blocked off plus the governor will need a reference line to the tank to operate. It's probably oily in the air port from lying down but id it doesn't clean up when you run it the rings could be bad.
thanks
I appreciate the info. would you be willing to exchange emails with me and maybe advise me If I have questions about the installation? you can reach me @ coatesgrafting@gmail.com
would you please email me? I have a question for you.. thanks
Yes I'm still here 🤔🤪🤗🦅🇺🇲
Gday Ken I was thinking maybe the horn only works upside down , like how it’s mounted on the sub ?
When it warms up, you need to change the fluid in your plow. Somehow, someway, water will get into the fluid over time and freeze. Meyers makes this very expensive very thin fluid that has anti-freeze chemicals in it, but I never used it. I just flushed it out after several years and used Dexron trans fluid. It will be a little sluggish with this fluid when you first start out, but that will go away as you use the plow.
one of the first things I did was flush it and put new fluid in it.
I think if it was me I would won't all brass fittings to show off that big brass horn but that's just me
