Mama Cass Elliot had a solo career as well. If you've ever seen Janis Joplin''s performance of "Ball & Chain" at Monterey Pop, Cass Elliot is the female spectator who keeps saying, "Wow!" at the end.
Cas's influence on the music of the time went far beyond her performances on stage or in the studio. Her production efforts and keen insight boosted many music careers, a fact for which she is rarely recognized. In fact, it was she who introduced Steven Stills to an unknown struggling musician named Neil Young.
I grew up listing to this amazing musical quartet. Mama Cass Elliot vocals was top notch. But Micelle Phillips was also an amazing soprano in the group. She co -wrote the song California Dreamin. But a lot of people don't know that Phillips was also superb actress. She was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in 1973.She also an actress in the popular TV soap opera Knots Landing in !987.
The mother, along withcPapa John of MacKenzie Phillips(Julie Romano on the original One Day At A Time tv comedy) and the Sisters Phillips in the Wilson Phillips singing group.
Wonderful to see you so happy today. Great reaction Emma! Folk rock. Had quite a bunch of hits 'Monday,Monday' 'Go where you wanna go' 'I saw her again' ' Dream a little dream of me' ' Dedicated to the one I love'
Surprisingly, their first single (1965) "Go Where You Wanna Go" didn't chart anywhere, yet still remains one of their better known songs. Still gets airplay on oldies radio, it was used in tv commercials.... It did, however, become a #16 hit for The 5th Dimension the following year.
Great song, I grew up in the 60's when this song came out and lived in California. It was a big hit back in the day and brings back some great memories.👀👀
Cass was known for her power but Michelle could belt it out too. Great example is Dedicated to the One I love, live on Ed Sullivan. Ed's show had a full orchestra to back any singers or bands. They often rearranged songs to be shorter. By mid 60s he was letting them do whole songs.
I was born in 1950 so I was a teen in the 60's and I love this a long with others you might want to check out a couple that don't get a lot of requests but are really good they covered an old Beatles tune "I call your name" and an original "I saw her again" released after Michele rejoined the group after a few months absence!!
The Mamas and the Papas had their origins in New York City as parts of the Greenwich Village Folk music scene of the early '60s. Denny Doherty came from Halifax, NS🍁and John Phillips from Virginia. Cass Elliot was from Maryland and had a Jazz and Theatre background. Eventually they went to California where Michelle Phillips joined the group. They merged their Folk roots with the Beat/Pop style of music to form their own unique sound. They had 7 Top 10 hits between 1965 and 1968. John Phillips also wrote the song "San Francisco (Be Sure To Wear Flowers in Your Hair)", recorded by Scott McKenzie. After the breakup they each attempted solo careers, with Cass achieving the most success with 3 Top 40 singles.
Check out the Seekers…from Australia..a couple of years before The Mamas and the Papas…1964..The Seekers knocked The Rolling Stones and The Beatles off the top of the charts with their own number one…I’ll Never Find Another You…the girl had a unique voice…Judith Durham..died a few years ago…
For every guy I knew 'back in the day', Michelle was definitely #1 in their fantasy files. I mean, c'mon, how could she possibly not be ( unless you were also considering Bardot, Tuesday Weld, Yvette Mimieux, Rachel Welch, Jayne Mansfield, Julie Christie, Claudia Cardinale, Jane Fonda, Agnetha Faltskog, etc.)
When this song came out, it became a kind of an anthem of California, especially Southern California. It played a lot on our tinny little transistor radios......still sounded good tho!
Mama Cass did a beautiful hit song called DREAM A LITTLE DREAM. Mama was in the audience, mouth agape, at the 1967 Monterey Pop International Festival (The Who; Jimi Hendrix; Otis Redding... many more) when Janis Joplin sang BALL AND CHAIN... which was basically her introduction to the world. Do see that video!
Michelle Phillips', the blonde, daughter, Chyna, and sisters Wendy and Carnie Wilson, daughters of Beach Boy Brian Wilson, formed a group in 1989. Calling themselves Wilson Phillips and had a massive hit with "Hold On" they played in regular rotation on MTV. Worth a look.
This song was released in December 1965 and it still sounds great. John Phillips (Playing the guitar) was a superb song writer and a masterful arranger. Denny Doherty singing lead and Mama Cass Elliott (The heavyset girl) who both had awesome voices along with Michelle Phillips who was married to John and also had a good voice were the Mamas and Papas. Sadly they are all deceased except Michelle, she is the only one still living. I grew up with this music, I loved it then and I STILL do.
The agonizing thing about this song it that we didn't get at least one more solo vocal verse by Denny Doherty. His voice is just amazing and it's a crime the song was so short and didn't give us more by him.
Cass Eliot had the best voice that I have ever heard. She is the heavy girl. Don't judge by looks, listen to her solo, "Dream a Little Dream of Me." All of this group's songs are hits.
This style of pop music is called Sunshine pop which is known by the harmony vocals. 60's groups like Spanky and Our Gang, The Free Design, The Fifth Dimension, The Friends of Distinction, The Association, The Love Generation and others had varying degrees of success. Loved your reaction to this gem. You should check out some Mama Cass Elliot solo albums to hear her strong pipes.
The Mamas and the Papas were a great 4-piece in the '60s. They did a song called Creeque Alley with lyrics about other people in bands at the time, and whom they knew, and how they 'made it'. Great song you should check out. Yes, Cass Elliot had an incredible voice as did Denny Doherty (who sang the solo bit). They knew one another before this band, and he was in Cass' band called the Mugwumps. If you want to check out an unusual song from the '60s but that is just lovely as can be, go for the baroque pop song by the Left Banke called Pretty Ballerina. They had a hit with that and with Walk Away Renee. The composer was 15 year old Michael Brown, band member in love with the bassist's girlfriend at the time. The singer was 17 year old Steve Martin Caro who had a perfect voice for their songs. Additionally, the song was written in Lydian mode, which is not usual as I expect you know. ❤
Written by John and Michelle Phillips and recorded by Barry McGuire, with John and Michelle Phillips handling the backing vocals. The song was already pressed on McGuire's album "This is Precious Time" when Lou Adler brought in Cass Elliot for backing vocals and Denny Doherty on lead. They erased McGuire's vocal track and put Doherty's in place of it and release it as a Mamas and Papas single.
Absolutely KRASIVAYA, just sheer magic listening to four great Singers, Singing along in Harmony; A song that helped define an era, and is still beautiful Today; And Emma is 100% correct it is uplifting Music, enriches the soul and after Hearts finally got their act together, it just caps of a Chudnyy Weekend, so a big thank you to Emma, please stay upbeat; Also wasn't it just Chudesno too see Emma so happy, relaxed and just having FUN; But quickly back to the Song, and Emma gave a Spokoynyy Uchtivyy reaction full off Shchegol'stvo and dusha; Cleverly and adroitly mixing in her analysis with total and complete ocharovaniye; Lastly Emma just looks so incredibly and stunningly KRASIVAYA; 🦅🥰😘❤👏🙏🙏👍🎶🎵🎶🎧🎙💐🍁🍁🦅.
You picked up on the magic, the "overtones". They used to joke about it in the studio, when they were cranking it was almost like a couple more members were joining in.
Fantastic Reaction Emma! Momma Cass’s voice was very strong. Michelle Phillips (Blonde on the left) is the only remaining living member of the band. Denny Doherty (CDN) was the gent who hit those high notes at the beginning. And John Phillips on guitar. This remains today one of my all time favourite songs! (Even though I was only 8 months old when it was released as a single)
This song always made me feel a bit melancholy and sad as though it was talking about good times from the past. I grew up with hearing this song on the radio and it sounds just as good today as it did back then. Another song with great vocals is one from System of a down called, "Lost In Hollywood", and it's not like the usual SOAD song at all and I think it's right up your alley Emma.
Try Rod Stewart Maggie May (live, Unplugged). Ron Wood (Rolling Stones & Faces) on acoustic guitar. Both men are two time members of the Rock & Roll hall of fame🔥🔥. This song was #1 in UK & USA.
it is so sad all but one of these folks are gone now....on the left, the blond, Michelle Phillips. You're hearing an alto flute play the solo. this is the sound of the mid 1960's. Another vocal group of 5 people that came in around 1967 was The Fifth Dimension, who sort of took over where the Mamas and Papas left off when they split up
Thanks for doing THIS reaction ..... Mamas and the Papas, ICONs. At the end of your reaction, YOU mentioned the second woman from the right ...... that IS the legendary Mama Cass, RIP, what amazing person AND voice. From .... a HUGE fan .... of this group, we MISS her. I just subscribed to your channel .....
So refreshing you are. Yes, "Mama" Cass Elliott had a silky strong voice. in the '70s our family had a The Mamas Papas LP, and i want to get a copy ... if I can just locate which it was. There was a song called "Stringman" on it in which Cass really sang ...
*Denny Doherty. Denny McLain was a pitcher for the Detroit Tigers. or maybe you were thinking of Denny Laine of the Moody Blues/Wings. All those talented Dennys!
Yes, the "fat" girl is the one with the great voice. Her name was "Mama Cass Elliot". She had many hits with and without "Mamas & Papas". Sadly, she died very young.
Songs from the Carpenters --Superstar, Rainy Days and Mondays, Yesterday once More, We've only just Begun. I saw them in 1972 and Karen sang and drummed through a cover of the Beatles song Help which is here on UA-cam. As are the other songs.
Can you imagine them just sitting around figuring out the harmonies? Cass was known as an outstanding hostess in the Laurel Canyon days. Hosting a who's who of talent. No doubt some of the greatest compositions of the generation came from The Canyon
That Michelle, if I recall the name correct, was such a genuine beauty. Just watch photos or clips of her, she just is the way she is without posing or anything, she have a bit goddes kind of looks. Reminds me that brit girl who hang around with serge gainsbourg, both have that pure and natural effect.
I grew up in the Carolinas while they were cranking out hits along with all their other neighbors in Laurel Canyon, a suburb of L.A., CA. Nothing complex there, but very accessible. It's good to see young reactors look at old folks' music. Now if you want to be truly amazed, head on over to The Warning channel and watch anything from their Pepsi Center, CDMX tenth anniversary show. They're three Mexican women who formed a band at 8, 11, and 13. They went viral a year later, and today they've recorded four albums and they are touring the world. Their whole lives' works are on the Internet. They toured with Evanescence this Fall, along with Halestorm, in Canada.
The Beech Boys did a great cover of this song with the blessing and cooperation of The Mamas and the Papas. Some members of The Mamas and the Papas are in the Beech Boys official cover video of this song.
What makes your reactions so fun is your quirky personality as well as your knowledge, beauty and ability to show you know of which you speak and sing!
You have a great ear for the harmonies of The Mamas and The Papas. Legend has it that during the recording of the album California Dreamin' (If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears) appears on, Phil Spector walked into the mixing booth and asked the sound engineer, "where are the extra voices coming from?". The harmonies were so precise, the collective voices created subharmonics that made it seem like more than four people! Truly astonishing, considering the era; no digital, no resonate overlays, no autotune. Just pure talent, plain and simple.
I, like every other 15 year old boy, had huge crush on Michelle Phillips. Cass Elliot rip had such a strong and beautiful voice. John Phillips on guitar. Denny Doherty on vocals.Chynna Phillips ( from Wilson Phillips fame) is their daughter. Nice trip down memory lane.🤘😎❤
If you allow me Emma, I would recommend the song "horse to the water" but specifically the version they played in the tribute "a concert for George". Since I met you I thought about that song to make you react. Thank you very much for your tenderness and the sweet way of sharing your thoughts with us. Greetings from Uruguay
The lead singer, Denny Doherty, is from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, very close to where I'm from. Unbelievable voice. Younger people in Canada may remember him later in his life as the Harbourmaster/narrator of the Canadian TV Show Thodore Tugboat from 1993 to 2001.
I highly recommend the film Chungking Express by Wong Kar Wai in which an employee at a takeout restaurant in Hong Kong dances to this song while she's working.
They had great harmonies, check out , Monday Monday from them sometime!! The eagles had amazing harmonies, listen to the live performance of Seven bridges road. Five part harmonies!!!
The guy playing the guitar is John Phillips, who did the arrangements for their music. The girl on the end was his wife at the time, Michelle Phillips. The girl with the more powerful voice is Cass Elliot, who sang lead in a number of their songs. The guy singing the lead part in this is Denny Doherty. The members all had a folk music background, which is part of what led to this folk-rock group's sound. Edit: It occurs to me that I could add that John and Michelle Phillips' daughter Chynna Phillips grew up to be a member of the pop trio, Wilson Phillips. The other two girls in the trio are daughters of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. Their names are Carnie and Wendy. Their mother is a less well-known singer from the 60s named Marilyn Wilson-Rutherford (formerly just Rutherford of course).
Your a very bubbly and nice to look at young lady... I watch a lot of the reaction channels and have been for about the last 6 years you will enjoy what you're doing much more if you will just listen to the complete song close your eyes listen intently deeply however you wish to choose to do so but then at the end of the song then give me what you think of the music and how it may have touched you and maybe what you thought the song was about but honestly a really good reaction I like your truthfulness in your face we can tell that you did like the song so keep on spreading the music around have fun with it go back into the 60s the 70s the 80s I could suggest lots of music but I'll let you find it out on your own by the way I'm 65 this is my generation of music❤🎉😊
I'm 68 and it's hard for me to realize that you've never heard this song before! This is possibly the most well-known song in the world. In the movie Congo, there's a scene in Africa where one of the characters in the movie starts singing the first phrase and all the porters pick it up and start singing the song! They worked really hard on their harmonies. Check out Dream a Little Dream of Me featuring 'Mama' Cass Elliott! She can belt and she can sing soft and everything in between. I noticed they used a burlesque beat as well!
Nice reaction again dear Emma on a very nice song. Another one to watch is Hold on From Wilson Phillips , they are the Daughters of the Mamas and the Papas. Hope you give a reaction to this one also. Always nice to look at you and your reations Emma 😘
I was born in 1946 and I'm so glad to have lived thru several decades of great music like this!!
Something to be said for being older. Im 55 ..we had the best of years for lots of stuff.
@@Daehawkim 65 years old. My groove was the 70’s music
Born 1956, all this music formed the foundation from which I became a music teacher.
I would not want to be born in any other year than I was: 1962.
1949 here. I grew up with this fantastic music, which still brings a tear to my eyes and wonderful memories.
Once you come around again to this group. Have a listen to Monday Monday. Similar harmonies, great song. Great reaction.
The level of yearning in this song is bottomless. So many years have passed, but the vibe of longing to be happy is universal.
Mamas and Papas always had fabulous and clean harmonies.
The original version with the voice of Michelle Phillips and Mama Cass ua-cam.com/video/P5jbWlBivfw/v-deo.html
A little fact about the second girl as you put it (mama cass) is she passed away from choking on a cheeseburger I heard
But I’m sure somebody will try to correct me they always do lol
This song never gets old even though its old it timeless
Mama Cass Elliot had a solo career as well. If you've ever seen Janis Joplin''s performance of "Ball & Chain" at Monterey Pop, Cass Elliot is the female spectator who keeps saying, "Wow!" at the end.
Takes one to know one, although everyone was saying wow.
Cas's influence on the music of the time went far beyond her performances on stage or in the studio. Her production efforts and keen insight boosted many music careers, a fact for which she is rarely recognized. In fact, it was she who introduced Steven Stills to an unknown struggling musician named Neil Young.
Cass was also at Woodstock 69 to support Janis, Two of the most incredible voices ever sadly gone too soon.
Their harmonies still give me goosebumps and raise the hair on my arms!!!🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶

She also played a romantic roll with Captain Picard on a Star Trek Next Generation, WE'LL ALWAYS HAVE PARIS.
The mother, along withcPapa John of MacKenzie Phillips(Julie Romano on the original One Day At A Time tv comedy) and the Sisters Phillips in the Wilson Phillips singing group.
Yes Emma, you are right, this is music for enjoyment.
This song seemed so fresh and new when it came out. The hippie movement and vibes were just getting known in the country. Very positive and uplifting.
One of the most Iconic songs of all time!

Great song, I grew up in the 60's when this song came out and lived in California. It was a big hit back in the day and brings back some great memories.👀👀
Michelle Phillips,1st from the left went on to co star and many movies and TV shows after TMaP were over..
They were so, so good.
Wonderful voices
Cass was known for her power but Michelle could belt it out too. Great example is Dedicated to the One I love, live on Ed Sullivan. Ed's show had a full orchestra to back any singers or bands. They often rearranged songs to be shorter. By mid 60s he was letting them do whole songs.

Great song by the mommas and the poppas! Luv your reaction Emma!❤

you should checkout "White Rabbit " by Jefferson Airplane, as Grace Slick has an amazing voice.
Born in cali.Stationed in Alabama in military. Always proud when this song played on the radio!
Mana Cass,Cass Elliot, the second lady in from the left as you watch, had an amazing voice
The one and only Bud Shank, on alto flute, improvised that middle riff in the studio.

When this song came out, it became a kind of an anthem of California, especially Southern California. It played a lot on our tinny little transistor radios......still sounded good tho!
Another gorgeous reaction. Love this song. Thanks hun
Thank you too 😍
So much fun 😂 Keeps on proving I lived in the golden age of music. You gotta be in your 80s
This is the only song that has this "sound." Just incredible and that's why it is an eternal classic.
Born in California
Still pull over to groove to this song
Thanks!
Glad you agree!
The male singer is Denny Doherty
The agonizing thing about this song it that we didn't get at least one more solo vocal verse by Denny Doherty. His voice is just amazing and it's a crime the song was so short and didn't give us more by him.
🎊 If you need a little boost and want to hear something uplifting…the 1960’s is your generation‼️ That uplifting sound is EVERYWHERE!!!
Cass Eliot had the best voice that I have ever heard. She is the heavy girl. Don't judge by looks, listen to her solo, "Dream a Little Dream of Me." All of this group's songs are hits.
Her daughter’s book is sweet and a little sad, kind of like Cass. Bless her.

Please also react to the song "Monday, Monday" by this band.
I never thought of it before but I was listening and The Bangles, Hazy Shade of Winter came into my mind.
Another great song of theirs: 12:30.
Thanks for doing THIS reaction ..... Mamas and the Papas, ICONs. Now you really need to check out Monday Monday, from the Mamas and the Papas
Denny McLain was from Canada, Nova Scotia I believe and he had the Voice for this Iconic Group

Magical song. So happy and upbeat! Great harmonies and composition.
I'd like to see reactions to Simon and Garfunkel or James Taylor.
Lead singer Denny is from my hometown, right here in Halifax. Come visit Nova Scotia!
Since we're going back to the 1960's ...

Beautiful song. It reminds me of the movie Forrest Gump
"Dream a Little Dream of Me: by Mama Cass Elliott -- beautiful song!! you will love it.

Thank you so much!!
The Beech Boys did a great cover of this song with the blessing and cooperation of The Mamas and the Papas. Some members of The Mamas and the Papas are in the Beech Boys official cover video of this song.
This is my favorite folk rock band, they are so awesome 👍😎
Thnx Emma ✌️😎
You're welcome 😊
Beach Boys made a pretty good cover of this song. In 1986.

Truly astonishing, considering the era; no digital, no resonate overlays, no autotune. Just pure talent, plain and simple.
yes mama cass had a very strong voice
Wrecking Crew studio musicians! Tight!
Cass Elliott was a solid solo artist. If you like this sound, try the 5th Dimension, a contemporary harmony group.
Just listen to the music!!!
Michelle Phillips, stunning!
I believe their personal lives become part of the music. they are 2 couples.
Emma! You’re back!
That's great, have you listened to the Angelina Jordan cover of this? it's phenomenal !!
On Vocal Harmonies Know Who 2 Band Members Are ! Last Name Wilson Cousins To Beach Boys !! 😂😂
Temp dropped 50°f to the 60's with a few drops of rain in NorCal this week. Winter is definitely closing in (hit 80°F today)
I think it's going to be mid-80s here in the northern part of the Central Valley this week. I really miss Autumn....
You said you were interested in hearing the 2nd woman's voice. That's Mama Cass (Cass Elliot). Check out her "Dream a Little Dream of Me".
Just great to relax by listening to the Mamas and the Papas! Thanks Emma!
You are right)))
If you want to check out a great solo by Mama Cass, listen to her rendition of "Dream a Little Dream of Me."
I remember they used this song in the movie Air America as well.
Yeah you have to react the Filipino kid's family band Missioned Souls for thier cover of Diary of Jane, Hysteria, The Kill of 30 seconds to mars
Denny Doherty was the harbor master on the Kid's Show: Theodore Tugboat
Nice reaction again dear Emma on a very nice song. Another one to watch is Hold on From Wilson Phillips , they are the Daughters of the Mamas and the Papas. Hope you give a reaction to this one also. Always nice to look at you and your reations Emma 😘
Thanks for the info!☺️🤗🤗🤗
@@Singwith-Emmatoday you're welcome 🌹
Chyna Phillips is the younger daughter of John and Michelle Phillips. Anne and Carnie Wilson are the daughters of Beach Boys Brian Wilson.
