  • I run an engine compression test on my 1965 Ford Mustang 302. Unfortunately the compression isn't great. Trying to figure out if we're in need of an engine rebuild.

Find you an early Explorer with a 5.0 and use the rear end as well. For the 8.8 and lsd.

Maybe pull the valve covers and see if there is a few stuck valves

You do need to do the "wet" compression test by adding some oil to rule out rings or valve train.

I had many showing low compression. However, once you drive it regular and put it few some heat cycles with fresh fuel and spark. They have a tendency to come back. Kind of a self cleaning valves, and re seating the rings thing. So don’t worry about it yet until you have a few hundred miles on the motor.

I'll drive it a bit first and see if it bounces back, thanks!

Could have some stuck rings on cylinders 1-4. If the motor sat for a long time you can fill the top of those cylinders up with diesel or some other penetrating fluid and see if the rings will come loose.

Yeah I'm going to throw some oil in those cylinders to see if compression bumps up at all. I put marvel mystery oil in them and let it sit for a few days before starting the engine. It seemed to help it turn over much easier.

Got my 68 in-line six started a couple of weeks ago after years of sitting. Thinking I will check compression next weekend after seeing this. The motor is so silky smooth, but has no power. I have access to a 351 that I can build up.

Im super interested in how the roll on primer comes out. Ive got space issues of my own when it comes time to paint

It seems to be setting up well so far. I'm still waiting on it to fully cure(4 days) before sanding and filling. Time will tell!

Love your Videos. Looking forward to every new one. Nice work. Thank you for putting out such an amazing series.

Most likely needs new rings. Take the 302 out of the Bronco and put it in the Mustang. You can probably do a budget rebuild on the 302 and put new crank and rod bearings in. Just need a good torque wrench to get bolts torqued to spec. The rebuild is easy but you do need an engine stand. Check out rookie pilot's videos on engine rebuilds. He does everything mostly right! LOL!

Yeah I love his videos! Angel is super talented. Space to do it is my main draw back, I need a bigger garage! haha

Thanks! Yeah I thought it would be fun to try, that way I wouldn't have to prep for spraying yet. I'll definitely be spraying the base coat and top coat!

Thanks! Yeah I've got many more videos to come! That's awesome you are putting your 68 back together, best of luck to you. I've got a painting video coming up next. Just primed it this past weekend and now I'm about to start the filler/bodywork.

I feel your pain, take your time and pull the head off the low compression side and look you might be surprised and see it is just a head gasket. Best of luck and keep doing your best.

Enjoy watching your vids. Going through a similar journey with mine. It can definitely be frustrating at times but curve balls are part of the process. As others suggested did u end up redoing your test with oil? Also was your engine warm when you initially did ur test?

    • @VanHoutenBuilds
      @VanHoutenBuilds  Місяць тому

Yeah I'm planning on retesting with oil to see if it's the rings. No, I tested it cold.

All should be within 20lbs of each other. You may have some burnt valves on 1-4.
You might get away with some aluminum heads. They are fairly cheap these days. It’s an upgrade.

If possible try and stay with that engine.might not be big problems with it.

swap the motor first , then paint , that way you can do the engine compartment while the motor is out
