How I Edit Car Photos

  • This is the most requested video topic I get. I don’t think my edits are anything earth shattering, but it’s part of the process, so I will share what I do. Editing isn’t just about the specific adjustments, it’s about the guiding principles of why you make the adjustments, which I’ll go into.
    It turns out I accidentally made this in 4K, which should help with seeing my screen details! If you can't see 4k, it might be an Apple payback issue, I'm not sure.
    If you want to download these raw files to practice editing with yourself, here they are: drive.google.com/drive/folder...
    Contents of Photo Examples:

      Unfortunately the ones I've used for years are no longer offered for sale. There are a lot of film-style preset packs out there that I don't have experience with, but will likely suffice. Here are two, if you try either of these, let me know how you like them!

    Just discovered your videos and want to say thank you for them, I've always liked cars since I was a kid and loved photographing them as a teen, now I'm a fine arts student specializing in media and my love for cars is coming up again. I often find tutorials on photo taking and editing to be super overwhelming and daunting, your videos are super chill, homey and personal feeling and really make me understand your work progress a lot and think of how to implement it for my own work. Thanks so much for your content! cant wait to see more :)))

    I've been waiting for this one, thank you! I would love another editing video as well. I like how you said your goal is to have artistic photos with a car in them. I shoot with a similar goal (of course depending what the image and goal is etc), but a lot of the time I try to make my car photos not just about the car, but just as much or sometimes more about what else is going on in the pic, whether that be the location, the lighting, the composition etc... so a lot of the time the car will just be a - sometimes small - element in the photo. I also generally naturally drift towards making sure all the location/background lines are straight and symmetrical for some reason, so the transform/perspective area of my editing program gets a heavy work out (if I don't nail it in camera). I'm also constantly telling myself to try to shoot photos that people would want to print and put on their wall (so, beyond social media).

      Wow, thanks so much! So cool to hear this. I have a video about focal lengths that goes into what I like and don't like: ua-cam.com/video/TKpu8-T1-hg/v-deo.html .
      For me, a 50mm (f/~1.8) prime is an affordable lens that teaches you so much about framing and photography. You have to move your feet to change your composition, if the whole car doesnt fit in the frame, then you have to get creative with perspective and/or cropping. You can't go wrong with a 50mm, and I always carry one.

    OMG! Thank you! Sorry, late to the discussion. I’ve been feeling exactly the same but everybody tells me it’s an essential lens. Especially for photojournalism, concerts… But even then when I look at the most breathtaking shots, it’s almost never taken with the 24-70, almost always a 14-24 or 70-200. I do feel that a good 50 mm might be a better complement to my regular kit to fill the gap.

      Sorry! I like the idea of offering a preset, but I don't really know where to start, and I'm apprehensive about having to offer tech support for something like that, so it's been on the backburner.
      For now, your best bet is probably to find a preset that emulates Kodak Portra film, since that's what the preset packs I've been using do.
      I found two, but I don't have experience with these - if you try either of them, let me know how you like them!

    Thank you for the video, I just spotted that you are editing your photos in 8 bit. Not sure if your doing it intentionally but since you're working with RAW, wouldn't it be better to work in 16 bit?

    • @capturingthemachine
      @capturingthemachine  5 місяців тому

      You are correct, I mostly didn't use 16-bit out of laziness, and because I wasn't really doing any serious pixel manipulation edits where I needed the maximum amount of information. But it's true, it probably would have been better to use 16-bit.

    I shoot Nikon and yes, I notice it's often slightly cool. I often use the white balance to eyedropper on the bitumen, as that is often a neutral grey/ black tone. On the red Ferrari I would sample the grey on the front wheel. I guess there's not ones correct method, just different tools for different occasions. On the video, great casual format.

I was playing around with various generations of Sony and Canon, and their filters / sensors are so different that it's impossible to make Sony looks like Canon and vice versa. No amount of Photoshop can help, it's just the different physics.
