Well, also there are things to take into account about Jayne.
      1) He hid and watched when Kaylee was having surgery in the first episode. The implication being that he was worried about her but didn’t want anybody to see that he has a heart.
      2) He often expresses reluctance to help out and then does anyway. Same thing, he’s always there in the end, but doesn’t want anybody to know he cares.
      3) He gets along well with the preacher, who wouldn’t abide a really evil man.
      4) He expressed genuine sorrow that a boy sacrificed himself for him. “I don’t know why it eats at me so!” It’s because he knows he didn’t deserve it.
      5) It may be that he decided to turn in River and Simon only after River attacked him with a butcher’s knife. And he had good reason to fear for everybody’s safety with her around.
      6) He probably changed his mind when he saw what the Alliance had done to her. The look of horror on his face was obvious. And that’s why he suddenly wanted to leave: he was hoping to get out before the police caught them.
      7) He’s obviously very uncomfortable with the praise that Simon gives him after that. Again, because he knows he doesn’t deserve it.
      8) He expresses shame about what he did, and cares about what the crew thinks of him. This is why Mal spares him.
      9) At the beginning of The Message we learn that he sends money home to his family and that he has a sick sibling.
      10) He proudly wears an ugly hat his mother made him, which is the purest expression of love there is.
There’s more, but I don’t want to talk about events that take place after this video.

So the way I see it, Jayne is like a stray, half feral dog that you bring home. Sometimes he pees on stuff, and he destroys your stuff, but if you give him the care and attention that he's been lacking he can become a good doggie. When the crew meets him he's literally a criminal, not the good kind of criminal (if such a thing can be said) that the crew is; he's having to relearn how to be part of a team with moral/ethical types. You can sort of see this in the way that his in public behavior doesn't always match his in private behavior, like in the pilot episode when Kaylee is in the med bay and instead of going in there and being with her, he's hiding up above and just rocking and hoping that she'll be okay. He doesn't know how to show that concern publicly. Because he's a dumdum. After Ariel, he knows that he's done bad; that's why he asked the captain not to tell anybody what he did. He didn't know he was going to survive, but he didn't want to be remembered for that terrible thing that he did. And the crew doesn't know that he did it, only the captain does. That's why they don't know why he's being generous with his cut. But he's doing it, let's face it, out of straight up guilt. Which is progress for him. Is he always a good person who makes good decisions? No. But he's doing his best, as I see it, to stop being the trash person that, for example, "Saffron" is.
Also people are totally allowed to dislike characters without getting yelled out by people online. Everybody's different and has different things that they like. For example, my person that I dislike is Inara, and people fucking love her. So ::throws up hands:: You do you, and like and dislike who and what works for you. ❤

@@chrissandoval7675 actually I think you said it perfectly. The problem for me is more of an actual personal problem, which is that I really dislike spoiled rich people and so she would need to actually earn my liking of her. But the show and movie didn't give enough time for that to happen. I can understand Jayne better because he's coming from the same sort of background as the people I'm surrounded by. But with Inara I just want to yell at her to just effing go already instead of whining about being stuck on Serenity, because she's not. She can actually afford to leave. Unless there is a background issue for why she's there in the first place, but again, the series didn't last long enough for us to find out, and for everything that we've seen and will see, she's a companion in good standing. She's like the roommate who doesn't understand how privileged she has been her entire life, and doesn't want to change her lifestyle in order to meet the privilege level of where she is now living.
I'm going to stop at this point, cuz honestly I didn't think I was even going to say that much, but I'm super baked and trying to make my thoughts work in a way that is grammatically correct enough for people to follow is extremely difficult.

Jayne is literally the worst but he's also hilarious which is why people like him. But he does have his glimpses if humanity they're just really subtle. Like when Kaylee got shot and he was sitting worried outside the infirmary. Or when he volunteered to help go rescue Mal when he didn't have to. Or how bad he felt for that kid that jumped in front of a bullet for him. He's still the worst most of the time but there is a lot of potential there for him to eventually get a hero moment.😊

That's how I feel, it's subtle, but it's still there. And when he asked Mal not to tell the others about what he did, it wasn't that he was worried about how they would react, it was more about concerns of what they thought of him. Jayne's turn from vaguely villainous to reluctantly heroic happened when Simon was explaining to him what was done to River at the hospital on Ariel. He was supposed to let the Feds come in and bust them, but instead tried to rush them out before the cops arrived. Knowing what the Alliance did to River, exactly why she was the way she was, triggered empathy in him and he tried to reverse course on turning them in.
I firmly believe Mal was going to space him until Jayne told him not to tell the crew what he did. He began to care about them and he cared about their opinions. He wanted the crew, especially Simon, to believe he died a hero. That's why Mal spared his life in the end.

      But that's not what happened.
He went to were the feds were expecting them.
If he was changing his mind, he would have exited where Mal wanted.
But he purposefully went out of his way to go where the cops were waiting for them and lied to Simon about why.
He was *still* trying to sell them out *after* he saw what they did to River.

    • @jackal59
      @jackal59 3 місяці тому +7

"He tried to rush them out" simply is not true. He took them out early and out a door to where the feds were waiting because that's what he arranged with the feds. They would not have caught them otherwise. I'm not saying that learning what was done to River started to turn Jayne around, which was helped by his realizing just how bad the "hands of blue" really were and his honest shame at Simon's praise. However, he didn't reserve course; if he had, he would have offered that as an excuse to save his life.

    • @maddwitch
      @maddwitch 3 місяці тому +4

@@happyslapsgiving5421Thank you! I don't know why people think Jayne changed his mind about turning them in just because he looked uncomfortable finding out what was done to River. The rush was because he needed to get them to the feds *before* they were due to meet up with Mal and the others, otherwise Mal would come looking. He needed to either be gone before Mal came looking or, given how he though he could bluff Mal when he had him in the airlock, the time to get back to the others and pretend he evaded capture while the feds handed the Tams off to the Blue Sun guys. He definitely would not have been out the back. Besides, if he had changed his mind, River wouldn't have reacted when Jayne told Simon that the plans had changed.

These two episodes are the main keys to why much of the Browncoats consider Jayne to be a somewhat decent person.
In 'Trash' we get to see how comfortable he is now around Simon and River. Before this the only time we see him treating either of them as more than baggage is the scene in 'Out of Gas' where they're about to celebrate Simon's birthday. But in this scene he's gracious, trades good natured barbs, and even seems relaxed. Even the fact that he's worried about what the Tams will think about him if they found out about Ariel says a lot. This came around because of what Mal said to him after the Ariel heist: That while Jayne has never considered the Tams to be on the crew, Mal does. And while he often disagrees with Mal, Jayne holds him in respect. And he really did listen to and absorb what Mal told him in that airlock.
In 'The Message' we get a major look into why Jayne is so mercenary minded. He sends the lion's share of the money he earns back home to his family to cover their expenses, in particular the medical bills for his sibling who suffers from 'the damp lung' (acute respiratory distress syndrome/ARDS). We've seen that Jayne's bunk on the ship is very bare bones. He puts what money he keeps for himself into weapons and gear that let him continue to make money to send home. We also are shown more closely than before that Jayne spends a lot of time talking to Shepard Book. The two of them have a very easy manner with each other that speaks to a level of comfort with each other (this also is a powerful clue about who Book likely was before he became a Shepard).
All of this comes together to show us that Jayne isn't a thug. He's a frontiersman. He's what Mal very likely would be if he hadn't been through the brutality of the war or hadn't been raised backwoods wealthy (in 'Our Mrs. Reynolds' he tells Saffron his family were ranchers with a large staff and he has zero trouble fitting in at the ball in 'The Shindig' although his manner is more country than the others there). His entire being is to look after his own, much like Mal, but that Jayne's idea of who counts as 'his own' is incredibly narrow but slowly expands across the show's brief existence. He's not stupid, he just has no formal education. He's not morally bankrupt, he only considers it pointless to apply his morals to anyone outside his small circle of family. Even way back in 'The Train Job' his insistence on finishing the job while Mal and Zoe were in custody was about making sure that Nishka didn't end up coming after the rest of them for failing the job.

The cast were told about the series cancellation right before they filmed the scene delivering the body home. Jayne sends all of his money home to his mother to help with his sick brother. Allegedly Joss told every actor one secret about their characters they weren't to tell anyone. A lot of folk have guessed that Shepard Book's was that he used to be an Alliance agent, but we'll never know now I guess. At least one such secret you'll see in the movie.

Simons scene with Jayne in episode 11 is one of my favorite scenes in the show and it's not one that really gets talked about enough. Most people, reactors included, have the same reaction of "I could never be that kind"; not realising that from Jaynes perspective, it was basically the cruelest thing that he could possibly do.
The entire point was Simon being the bigger man in the situation. He straight up says "I don't have to like you; but I will never betray your trust and will always do my best to keep you safe." The entire reason that the Ariel fiasco happened; was that Jayne _could not do_ the same thing. He let his own emotions get the better of him; and he almost ended up dead twice over because of it.
If anything; Jayne would want Simon to threaten him, to try and scare him into submission because that's what he's used to. To have the man he betrayed basically forgive him? That probably humbled him more than any death threat ever could, since it's outright showing "This is what you could have done, but you didn't, because you were too weak to do the right thing."
(Also; not to try and "defend" Jayne because... doesn't bother me if you like him or not lol. But I think it's more accurate to say that Jayne only cares about the people he respects. He didn't respect Simon or River, and that's why he was open to turning them in; but it's why Mals speech got to him because he *does* respect Mal, and didn't realise that turning them in was a betrayal.)

Jayne is a more extreme version of Mal, like what Mal would be if he didn't have his code of honor from the war. And Jayne had a rougher background, growing up on the show's version of the Frontier and doing what he had to do to survive, so his values weren't as strong, but we do slowly see him becoming a better and more selfless person as the show (and movie) go on.

My favorite part was when Inara mocks YoSafBridge in the dumpster.
As revealed in her later conversation with Mal, she was actually LYING when she said "the whole crew" was "in on" 'tricking' Saffron!
She did it entirely to knock her down a peg and make her doubt the incompetence of the crew of Serenity! Inara didn't want Saffron thinking they were "easy marks" anymore. (To "encourage" her to stay away from them.)
To me, it always felt very sweet & protective of her. Like a "Don't you disrespect my family!" kind of thing.

My take on Jayne. In Ariel Jayne sees something he's not seen before, Simon in his element. Strong, authoritative and confident. At one point you can kinda see the surprise in his face when he is dressing down the Dr who almost killed his patient. Doesn't stop his tomfoolery but i feel in the end it starts to change his perception of the Doc. Why Mal let him live? I think it's because Jayne showed he wasn't just callous, he did an awful thing but still cared how the others percieved him and asked Mal to make something up. If he hadn't shown that side, i have no doubt Mal would have spaced him. I also think that while Jayne knew the Cap well enough, he def made assumptions that Mals character was only surface deep. Think he was shocked and surprised by Mals reaction and how deeply he truly feels about his crew and doing right by them. So to summarize, the only reason Jayne is still alive is because he showed a bit of humanity and humility and Mal could see that Jayne finally understood what Mal means when he says 'crew' and that Mals morals are truly genuine.

In the episode War Stories, when the crew is gearing up to go rescue Mal, Jayne had made it clear they were "committing suicide". Yet when it was time to go, Jayne was strapped to the gills and ready to go. In Out of Gas, Jayne made sure Mal had everything possible to survive, including a spacesuit if needed. And he was remorseful after Ariel or he wouldn't have asked Mal to lie about how he died. So Jayne does care but after River slicing him with the knife, he wanted her gone and to get paid too would just be a bonus as Jayne would figure it. He actually is a great character and the ship would be poorer for his absence.

The fact that he can get such an emotional response even though it is negative makes him a good character.

Jayne he is not really good or bad, he’s just simple. You can count on him to be exactly what he always is, so as long as you account for his behavior and keep that in mind, he is useful in many ways

Simon completely Simoned his moment with Kayleigh early in the episode. There was an opportunity for "If there were to be only one girl in the world, I'm glad it could be you."

Beans! Goofball. Beans! You know the thing they were just talking about? He wanted his beans. Brain was not one of the organs being transported. And Jayne sends money to his family, thats where his motivation is.

Jayne is kind of bad yes but he is changing slowly and he sees Mal as a father figure. Also he sends most of his money to his mom.

    1. Go back and ONLY pay attention to Jayne when he opens his gift from his momma. 2. Thank you for supporting the gift from Jayne's momma. 3. "When you can't run, you crawl. And when you can't do that, you find someone to carry you. 😢 4. "...I just carried the bullet for a while 😭😭😭
