Sherwood, I’ve been meaning to thank you for your contribution to the automotive tech community. You guys are putting out some of the best automotive content on Y T. I know it’s time consuming and you do a great job touching on issues “outside the tech box“ I E how to respectfully handle customers while also being mindful of the importance of CYA. Last but not least it’s great to see a shop owner who treats his staff with such respect. I have 50 years in the business and from what I can see you and your team are a class act. Keep it up my friend!
I'm one of the few that have a problem with your channel. It is causing me marital problems because I watch these one after another. Whose fault is that Sherwood? It surely isn't mine. Seriously, you have a great channel for a multitude of reasons. You have really made think twice, before making a potential move that might see me on the precipice of a rabbit hole. You have more energy than most and it shows in the thoroughness of your videos. I think more importantly, you make sure we see everything you do, and you are constantly explaining as you go along. So, please keep it up and continue wowing us with your knowledge and willingness to share it and displaying your honesty for us, your customers, and your employees.
What a parts cannon. Great Diagnosis. You found the actual problem. Another shop woulda recommended an engine without even trying to diagnose it properly.
Fantastic. I love old guys (I'm old too) finding modern ways to use their knowledge of how engines work to reduce time and increase certainty associated with diagnostics. Very good.
Great video Sherwood this is yet another prime example of why you should always test and not just guess what's wrong with a vehicle and then replace parts for no reason. Great diagnostics
Thank you Sherwood. I just got my first 2 ASEs and now my boss has me doing more diagnostic work. These videos really help me learn outside of work. I love these.
I see it every day on forums, reddits, etc where someone's vehicle is acting up and people chime in "mine acted up once, I replaced the plugs", another says "I put in new fuel injectors", and on and on. This customer told you to replace an O2 sensor, probably for the same reason - someone had to with their car, yet the scan indicated nothing related to O2 sensors.
So nice to see step by step diagnoses. Not many people show all the steps. Would be nice to show how to diagnose some complicated problems with very little/ less expensive tools. Not all shops can afford higher end scopes.
He did show new school and old school.. he scoped it as a timing issue. Codes showed a timing issue and they tore it apart and showed timing marks were off.
It was nice to see how disorganized and messy your toolbox was. Now I know I’m not the only one who’s tool aren’t organized like a surgical suite. I could tell it cost you a lot of time to get the right things out and put into use.
Once I saw the upside down oil cap I knew this vehicle needed some work. I also noticed the customer has a beautiful oak tree. Only thing I'd have done differently is checked the oil and when it was last changed first. I bet you did that off camera? But I love watching other mechanics doing what they love like I do, so I don't feel alone. Many don't seem to love the job. We do. Nice work.
Timing chains generally don't jump unless they've been run in slop. That coating on the VVT actuators was a pretty good indicator of what the scope was going to say.
At the end, it would be helpful to see both the original waveform on same screen as the fix to see the difference. Great diag Sherwood. Thanks for the video.
Watch you almost every night on my tv after turning wrenches all day, girlfriend loves it 😂 keep up the good work man, love the level of professionalism and knowledge you are willing to share for free
Love the way you explain the process of the why behind the troubleshooting and then the manner in which you display the process. Makes total sense from a mechanical standpoint. The sludge on this engine was substantial. Was the engine a high mileage one? and if not, maybe there is some negligence on the customer in regard to the oil changes. You are bringing great credit and prestige to Technicians throughout the nation, it is because of instructors like you that I became a technician in the military. Love your content.
I love your videos. I do have a safety issue I was concerned with while you hooked up the negative probe to the battery. All your watches and bracelets and rings on your body. I am concerned that your may be causing a potential hazard to yourself when working on live batteries and jumpers. I myself take all rings and jewelry off my body before working on any cars. Other than that I think your shop is top notch. Just looking out for your safety. Cheers and happy wrenching!!
Good video, it is always good to have known good patterns to compare, love the videos when you show your mistakes too, we know we all make them, keep it up 👍
Grt job guys, I go to shop that struggles so much, I keep telling him dude, watch these folks ull understand what ur testing, when you know what ur expecting to c,
Another great video! Like the Nissan vehicles video, the Edge should have a PID to let you know if the cam and crank are in time with it each. It will just show sync/ not synched. Super quick and easy to tell.
This engine is like the Land Rover that I had to replace the intake timing VCT because it tends to brake the locking pin and rattles like crazy. I had to do it again because the chain snapped after the customer changed the engine oil at Jiffy Lube; after 3500 miles, not sure what happened there because the parts came from the dealership, reinstalled the new chain again and didn't hear of it again. Insane to have snapped a chain if you ask me, everything else was fine, had to change the tensioner just for kicks on that engine.
Hammer and hatchet artists (what we called them in construction) think that a change of spark plugs will make up for a dozen missed oil changes. I'm an old DIY who cut my teeth maintaing a fleet of company vehicles in the early 1970s.
Definitely want more scope videos. I have the same escope 8 channel with the IEA and I It's been almost 2 years and I still have not been able to benefit from the IEA software. I'm also trying to verify if carbon buildup is causing misfires with the scope.
Loved this video. Perfect example of good scope usage. My only questions, whats preferable, the ats scope used here or a pico? Plus if i could get advice on which pressure transducer to get thats great also. Im on the market for a scope, preferably 4 channel at least so i dont have to upgrade soon, just as soon as im comfortable with my little uscope that i been practicing on for now. Thanks!
You guys should do a video on how to find a good mechanic that knows how to properly diag and solution. Not a part changer. The other side of it too is when you find a good shop but they turn down anything significant for newer, more complex, cars. Here on Long Island, you don't know unless you know.... And I don't know 😢 lol
Was the timing chain actually stretched and off time in this vehicle or were the phasers stuck causing timing to be off. i am asking because it looked like both cams were off but at different degrees.
Absolutely love the videos and appreciate all the knowledge you share on the scopes. Hoping to win the escan that would be awesome great work and great videos
Hey Sherwood, are you able to show a video on how to do a o2 senor rise time test with a oscilloscope and also how to do a co2 cranking test for cats and a peak o2 test using a 4 or 5 gas analyser. I think that video would be awesome for your viewers. Us smog diagnostic techs here in California are so use to doing those tests to more clearly condemn cats and oxygen sensors.
Did you guys do any kind of test for cylinder leak down after finding the jumped timing. Just curious because I would be worried about valve and piston contact.
Do you have experience with 99 Camry Toyota 1MZ v6 engines? Have one that has a bit of a rough idle, it seems to run normal, just the idle has a buzziness/shakiness to it. Are they sensitive to worn mounts perhaps? No check engine light. Oem spark plugs & wires. Cleaned throttlebody & MAF. In the past changed one of the upstream O2s with a Denso one due to heater circuit issue, but it had the idle issue before that was changed. New Toyota PCV valve and it's elbow hose. Quick scan shows engine and air temps read same when cold. LTFs shows subtracting like 2 to 5%.
Hey Sherwood, been loving your content for over a year now. I was gonna ask about your kingbolen scanner ? I have a Snapon Triton d10 & not happy with all the software on it. What’s up with the kingbolen ? Is that older launch product & how do you like their products & software updates ? Really been looking for a supplemental scanner for other makes & model cars
My question if somebody can answer is would the timing issue be able to cause a check engine light for the 02sensor.I thought thats what th trouble code was when he put the scanner on it in the starting of the video.Im obviously not a mechanic I do alot of my own work but I'm just curious in learning different things with engines
Hi guys. Thanks for all the great videos. How can I talk with Sherwood about diagnosing some issues with a car I have and making an appointment? Thank you so much!
Any idea why it skipped timing. That is a newer car although looking at the phasers condition the oil change schedule was not tight. Great video I learned a lot.
Cool videos as always we should all in this industry help one another this industry is changing fast and there at not many people that want to do these jobs anymore which is fine it just makes us more valuable not as much as a plumber but hey
Those actuators look nasty Good job replacing those parts when you have it apart. Definite sign that somebody didn’t change oil frequently. Or used the “oil life” which it wrong. 5k oil change with synthetic oil

Glad you enjoyed it
Much prefer this style of video where you take us along with you on the process instead of the summary approach. Great video!
If my mechanic doesn't do the "old man squint" when looking at something I don't want him working on my car. Keep up the good videos.
So this style video is much more fluid and outlines the thought process better than when you describe a car that has already been diagnosed
I see it every day on forums, reddits, etc where someone's vehicle is acting up and people chime in "mine acted up once, I replaced the plugs", another says "I put in new fuel injectors", and on and on. It was the actuators that cause the out of timing. Lucky it didn't do more damage. I had one last year split the lifted slots in half.
Excellent video. Thanks for showing how you went through the thought process of diagnosing.
Very interesting. A master technician at work. You sir get the 👑

Timing chains generally don't jump unless they've been run in slop. That coating on the VVT actuators was a pretty good indicator of what the scope was going to say.
So are you saying that the timing chain jump was due to engine sludge? If so, what fails that allows the chain to jump?
love this video, showed the complaint, the diag process, the correction, and confirmation. thank you
Nasty krud in that engine. Must be an example of the 10-15,000 mile oil change. Great job explaining why selecting each diagnostic procedures.
At the end, it would be helpful to see both the original waveform on same screen as the fix to see the difference. Great diag Sherwood. Thanks for the video.
Diagnose is not easy, but you is very good. More pls.
5 stars for the shop dog!
Liked it immensely ! Specifically the detail / precise coaching / describing your mindset-rationale .
Watch you almost every night on my tv after turning wrenches all day, girlfriend loves it 😂 keep up the good work man, love the level of professionalism and knowledge you are willing to share for free
Keep hopping with the content guys!!!Cheers from Sydney, Australia.

Another great video guys! Bernie would be proud of your In-Cylinder diag.
Hey thanks there's nothing that I don't like about you all's videos brother just keep on teaching love it big guy

Appreciate your support and glad it’s helping you learn new things!
@@theroyaltyautoservice thank you!
Love watching the troubleshooting process
Appreciate the support and glad you like it!
Good video, it is always good to have known good patterns to compare, love the videos when you show your mistakes too, we know we all make them, keep it up 👍
Gotta love the new scopes.
You're a true professional! It's refreshing to watch how this is done!
The dog is saying “how can I help”?
Love the pup close-up!!
Very educational diagnosis.
Fantastic effort. As someone who would love to have the skills and knowledge but just doesn't, I salute you.

unlike myself you have the answer when asked why you're talking to yourself . Great content
Great video. I like how you explain things about what you are looking for and looking at with the scope.
Hammer and hatchet artists (what we called them in construction) think that a change of spark plugs will make up for a dozen missed oil changes. I'm an old DIY who cut my teeth maintaing a fleet of company vehicles in the early 1970s.
Love that scope touch screen makes it look slick
I Spy With My Little Eye a Check Engine Chuck Load Cage! Great product. Another phenomenal video guys. Keep up the great work!
Awesome Sherwood and Sherwood JNR ..... love to see these videos, good job, thanks for you time
Great video, hopefully someday I can get a lab scope like this.
Fuel injectors: maintenance item. Engine oil: lifetime fluid.
I'm confident you checked the condition and level of the oil first. Phasers can be funny. I know you know 😉👍
Great diag, repair and follow up.
This vehicle obviously isn't owned by a knowledgeable car person. When they said fuel injectors, I'd lay money they meant those new coil packs.
Great video. Would love more in cylinder pressure testing with scope!!
5:09 being properly supervised I see!
GREAT video. Wish i had that knowledge!
Great video for sure. I like how honest you guys are. Keep it up...
I really appreciate the time and effort you put into making these very interesting and instructional videos.
Most likely a lack of maintenance for at least a good portion of the life of this vehicle. They just drive them into the ground!
Definitely want more scope videos. I have the same escope 8 channel with the IEA and I
It's been almost 2 years and I still have not been able to benefit from the IEA software. I'm also trying to verify if carbon buildup is causing misfires with the scope.

Sherwood 3 as…. “The Cameraman” coming to a theater near you! 😂😂
Do you get your “known goods” from some data website/company or just from you previous jobs?
Another great video. Out of curiosity, what causes this to happen? Infrequent oil changes?

@@onlineretail3550
Yeah
thank for this video, i love to learn more about pico to set up,
Also notice the compression pressure is much higher with the incorrect timing. (I’m sure you did anyway). Love your channel.😎
Great video awesome equipment and knowledge
We appreciate you!
Proof is in the puddin, when it running good 👍
Absolutely love the videos and appreciate all the knowledge you share on the scopes. Hoping to win the escan that would be awesome great work and great videos
9:44 bought a 5 drawer box at Harbor Freight to keep from walking to the big boxes except for specific things

What a great shop!
Great video
I was shuddering as I watched how tightly that spark plug had been tightened into that head, visions of stripped aluminum threads😨
Love your videos. Can you make a follow up video on A/C?
Awesome 👍
This stuff literally is harder than what most doctors do on daily basis

Someone misdiagnosed that the fuel injectors were faulty, replaced them, discovered that it didn’t solve the issue and then called it ‘maintenance’.
Yeah you’re probably onto something there. That story didn’t really add up! 😬
How many miles were on this Edge? My 2.0 Escape is running very similar & throwing the same codes🤬😡
That is one nice scope. 😃
The thing is that chain was suppose to have no problems like timing belts I guess not.😂😂😂😂😂
Look at carbon build up in engine (aka sludge).
Very nice. I like.
A mechanic after my own heart - doesn't like that the oil filler cap is upside down. Anything worth doing is worth doing right.

Exactly you can never change oil to frequently don't wait for maintenance reminder light.
