I like how she says you booked the night train FOR A REASON and she says you told your family FOR A REASON then says she COULDN’T give a reason showing how different they are as people :(

I’ve listened to this song around a hundred times and never caught the “reasons” reference through the song. Thank you for helping me realize another clever lyrical trick in this amazing song. I love that I can never sleep on her lyrics…
She said in this album she isn't really using personal experiences to write songs! She just imagined different perspetives and wrote it.(except for a song called "Marjorie" which is about her grandma)
Coney Island is about some of her past relationships!
Long Story Short is about her as well I guess.

- Gold rush and willow are about joe
@@booabo I mean, maybe inspired a little by joe, but definitely from a different perspective. In gold rush, the speaker of the song explicitly says she’s not going to go for the guy she’s singing about because she doesn’t want to compete with a gold rush. That’s the whole song. And in willow, the speaker perspective is a lot more clingy and codependent than Taylor seems to be about Joe in many other songs or the rare times she talks about him.

It is about an engagement, but the engagement never happened. In actuality, the song is about a couple with two completely different plans for a night. The girl wants to break up, and the guy wants to propose, neither of them know what the other is planning.

The breakup songs on this album along with folklore were helped written by William Bowery, a pseudonym for Joe Alwyn, Taylor's boyfriend. He does the piano in this song. Taylor has never been happier in her relationship, she and Joe just like to write breakup songs together.

Love this song. This song hits me for some reason.. I've never even been engaged haha. I just feel so bad for both of these Characters.
I feel that from the perspective of the narrator, she is ultimately trying to do the cruel but kind thing in the long run by rejecting his proposal. Whether she is feels that she is saving him from all of the hurt and pain that he would have to face, living a life with her when she has a mental illness or if she is truly not the one and that he should be with someone better. It is tragic and painful, but she is trying to save him in the end.
Also I love how the music, ( guitar and bass) are played in a way that mimics the bubbles in Champagne as they float and break on the surface!. It really adds to the effect and mood of the song. Taylor is a master and her pen game is Fierce!. Thanks for posting your reaction! I definitely agree that Evermore and Folklore are possibly her greatest albums.

She wrote this song with her boyfriend and he is a fan of breakup songs. There will be more to come in the future.
I've varied so much on a meaning for "champagne problems". Like, first I thought that maybe it's more the physical thing (what do I do with this thing I brought to celebrate when I'm no longer celebrating?!), before thinking that maybe it's to do with problems she has with being happy (and whether or not any mental blocks she might have would be dismissed as some type of "sham pain"). I'm currently of the view that, when she refers to his heart being of glass, that his was filled with champagne/bubbles of joy, and killing those bubbles by breaking his heart was the champagne problem. I'll probably think something else by next week though 😅
If you actually look up champagne problems, the definition given is “Problems when compared to issues of poverty, natural disasters and war, are not that big of a deal”. Maybe to her her problems were a much bigger issue, but he saw them as “champagne problems” and another reason why when he proposed, she declined
@@sandraquezada6391 I can definitely see that 👍🏻 Thanks! :) I think the same definition can also be applied to the proposal/breakup itself (or any other rifts they had in the relationship): ultimately he's going to find someone new, and this kind of cataclysmic event that he feels this proposal was will become a champagne problem when viewed with more life experience
