    To me, this is the most heartbreaking song from this album. The fact, that she used the words tolerate it. It’s not even like this person is accepting this love, he TOLERATES it, like it’s an inconvenience for him. Also, the last part is so painful. She knows she could leave and look for something better. And she wants him to know, that she COULD, but there’s always that “I could, but I probably won’t”. And it ends the same way it started. She is watching him and probably stays in the relationship, which often happens in reality. This song is just perfection and the more I listen to it, the more meaningful it gets.

      Yes, but also happiness is on that level I think of maturity and heartbreak and love all at the same time.

      I like to think that when she says “I sit and watch you” at the end she means that she’s not seeing him tolerate her love anymore because she’s moved on and all she does now is just sit and watch him

      It is supposed to be the most heartbreaking and emotional song in Evermore cause it's crowned as the album's Track 5. True Swifties should know what this means, otherwise Google it to learn what's special about the 5th song in Taylor's albums. 😉

    I could just imagine a housewife sitting on a chair across from her husband, reading a magazine, and looking over at him, and this song is just her entire thought process.
    He just looks up and asks “Something wrong?” And she just says “No honey” and goes back to reading.
    Like seriously, it sounds cheesy but people really feel like that everyday. Looking at someone or something or a situation and having a million thoughts go across your mind in seconds. It’s crazy

    I am a SUCKER for her track 5's, and I felt that nothing would be more powerful than All Too Well... but then this song appeared. The last chorus of "what would you do if I break free and leave us in ruins... believe me I could do it." is one of the most heartbreaking scenarios I've heard in a while. There comes a time where you realize asking for them to accept you is pointless, and you'll have to make that decision to leave on your own... but how can you leave your home? Why can't they just love you? Why do they just "accept" you?
    I think the simplistic instrumental is SO powerful, because it leaves room for reaction, and quite frankly, that's what loneliness with people right in front of you sounds like.

    • @clarkbarrett6274

      So, when she says that line I'm hearing.... "what would you do if I" ...."lefffftttt" before she says "break free and leave us in ruins." It's obviously not in the lyric....but oh so powerful. Am I the only one hearing that?

      i love that line so much to me its one of the most heartbreaking lyrics because its almost like she's trying to convince herself while saying that to her partner that she actually could leave but then the song ends by repeating the first lines which shows that she never did. because the cycle just continued. Definitely one of the best songs she's ever written

    This is exactly what has scared me about Falling in Love. I have fallen in love only twice but it has been the most vulnerable i have ever been and it threatened so much of what I felt was my identity. when you feel like you are not on equal standing with that person because you dont see them crippled by the intensity of their own emotions for you, in the same way you are for them. they have such power over how you feel about yourself. My love has never been abused but it demanded a lot of faith from me to pursue it, Faith which I did not have to begin with. I had witnessed too many adults abuse each other in the name of love , to trust the emotion and place all of me into it.

    Who needs therapy when Taylor's doing it for free?
    But seriously:
    - Feeling underapreciated : so relatable. Makes me think of stay at home wives, that live for the moment when the husband comes home. But can be applicable to any relationship.
    - relationship anxiety : maybe IT IS in her head. Maybe they just have different love languages.
    - wanting to leave but staying for love: i could break free. Yet I keep staring at you because I love you.
    And just the type of words she uses are so visceral and painful.
    And the fact that this song is thematically linked to both coney island, and it's time to go. Such good story telling.
    You HAVE to listen to happiness next. Same level of free therapy and lyricism.
    Really loved your reaction! Hi from Italy

    Great reaction, Nathan, and what an insightful discussion of the lyrics. Taylor Swift’s lyrics have literally gone next level this past year. But I’m here to be technical. 😃 🥁
    As you pointed out, the timing of this song is really interesting. It starts in what I count as 10/8 time (it’s possible to count - and seen by many - as 5/4 but 10/8 makes far more sense to me) with downbeats on 1, 4 and 7. There are piano chords on beats 1, 2 1/2, 4, 5 1/2, 7, 8, 9 & 10. The half notes are of course off beats, And since the 10 beats are eighth notes, the off beats are off by a 16th.
    So it’s 8 notes spread over 10 beats, the second and fourth being truly syncopated (by a 16th beat). When you add in the unusual time signature the down beats actually feel syncopated too (they actually are if you treat it as as 5/4 timing, in which case you’ve literally got syncopation on top of syncopation). and I think it’s the combination that creates that really cool tension.
    Getting back to the song’s meaning, I feel like the temporal discordance creates a tension that supports the uneasiness and doubt in her feelings and the emotional discordance between her and the other person.
    Incidentally, I’m pretty convinced by the opening verse that this is a (fictional) romantic partner. The “older and wiser” reference almost sounds a little bit sarcastic as if she’s describing how *he* feels about himself. Having those feelings and doubts and yet trying everything yourself to make it work is going to lead to ongoing underlying feelings of frustration and disconnection that could be characterized by the ongoing underlying rhythm of the song. She would be doubting him, doubting their relationship and doubting her own efforts to make the relationship work by pleasing him.

    When she was referring to her lgbt fans in an interview she said that her fans should know that people don't have to just tolerate their type of love but to celebrate it, so I'm pretty sure it's about a conversation between a father and his child having the conversation about being gay and not being accepted

    I think this song is about Scott and their downfall before she left big machine. She made that company, gave him everything for 15 years and he gave her nothing. He sold her master's to man she hates and she feels she lost everything.

    • @michellerivera6244
      @michellerivera6244 3 роки тому +8

      She's come out saying she wrote it after reading the book Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. There might be parallels to Scott -- I agree but, with SO many lyrical references to books in this album -- I think she really got a bunch of inspiration this time around from complex feelings she read in literature. Which is just amazing that is something she can do -- take what she reads and turn it into a masterpiece like THIS.

    • @kaceeharrison3715
      @kaceeharrison3715 3 роки тому +6

      @@michellerivera6244 I can for sure see that. Taylor is queen at writing something that is personal to her in a way that doesn't actually outright say it, if that makes any sense. But It does make sense that she was influenced by a lot of books, the writing of the songs is spectacular this time around. They really tell beautiful story's.

    • @wgrodrig5651
      @wgrodrig5651 3 роки тому +5

      Having listened to “It’s Time To Go”, I also think this is about Scott. “I gave it my all, he gave me nothing at all then wondered why I left” I feel like that correlates to the bridge in “Tolerate It”.
      “While you were out building other worlds where was I?” He went behind her back and didn’t tell her his plans to sell her music to Scooter. She wasn’t a thought for him at that moment, she gave an interview where she said that he had 300 million reasons to conveniently forget.
      This was one of the biggest betrayals for her, because they were practically family and he did stab her with a dagger when he sold her masters to a scumbag like Scooter.
