I came across your videos a few months ago just before you left the USA. I myself just retired from being a head flight attendant for 32 years in the Netherlands and looking to spend my retired days in the Alicante region. So your videos gives me the push to finally check out Alicante. Thank you Ale.

Yay! Thank you for doing this. I asked last week about grocery prices and it seems they’re cheaper in Spain. You have a very blessed life in Spain, I’m loving this era for you and your family 🤍🤍
Ale, I was wondering if one of the collapsible wagons that people use for picnics, sporting events, etc. would work for a cart? They have pretty rugged wheels, carry a lot, and you could just stack your grocery bags in them.
I had the same problem when I was staying with my family in-laws and going to the supermarket in Spain. If you buy chicken I would suggest buying Pollo Campero from Coren if you can find it. If you want to buy ground meat in the butchery section in the supermarket don't buy the pre pack container, ask them to grind in part 2 parts of veal for 1 part of pork. For beef stew - as for ternera lomo bajo o aguja. Filete de Lomo Bajo is good for doing on flat grill. For Pork you can ask chuleta or lomo.
@tgonzales29 I think she can find Pollo campero de Coren in Alcampo. Mercadona has it too, whole birds and packs of breasts, thighs and drumsticks. I agree that if she can/is convenient ground meat is better in a proper butcher. Mercadona used to have a in site butcher 20 years ago, but now it is only trays. Ale bought the best kind of minced meat they have. Generally I'm not a fan of mercadona 's beef, but the chicken and pork are good. Porkchops, whole racks of ribs, pork sirloin... For stews Morcillo, garreta, aguja... you can also ask directly for "ternera para guisar" and the butcher will know. Opposite that Mercadona, in the same street near the FNAC is a chain of butchers Carnes del Bierzo, and the veal there is better (a bit more expensive though).
@WonderfullyAle I totally understand! I'm from Alicante, but I have lived in other countries, and I think that there is always a steeper learning curve for basic and essential things than for the most complex ones. Food is so ingrained it takes a while. If it is useful for you, I would ask for beef aguja (chuck) Morcillo o garreta (shank) for stews. Also Carrilleras (cheek), both Pork and Beef, are so good for slow cooking stews as they're rich in collagen and after a few hours they are very soft and the sauce is great (if you have a pressure cooker is even better). Skirt steak, can be found as Entraña in some butchers. Fillet is Solomillo, and you can easily find both pork and beef ones in every supermarket. Pork is huge here, more than beef, and Chuletas (pork chops), and Lomo de cerdo (it's a lean oval cut) are everywhere. Lomo is great grilled and if it's very thin you can bread and fry them like chicken tenders. In mercadona they sell Cabecero de Lomo, and this part is great as a stew or roasted (it takes a while) and you can make pulled pork style things with them. Beef, for steaks I would ask for entrecot, or a thinner cut is filete de Babilla/ de Cadera (tail of/rump) Lomo alto/bajo I think they're similar to prime rib Un Chuletón is similar to a Tbone. Also depending on the age of the con, youll find carne de ternera lechal (a very young cow, pinkish meat), ternera (until the heifer is 12 months), añojo (older, 2 years, the meat is darker a deeper colour).
@@WonderfullyAle I quit buying packaged meat here in the US. I now buy the sub primal and butcher it myself. For instance I bought a whole Top Sirloin and after getting it home I cut steaks, stew meat then ground up 10 pounds into ground beef. When ribeyes go on sale I buy the whole loin and cut it to my specs. I also harvest as much fat as I can without impacting the taste of the meat to render it into beef tallow. So I have a questions. What are kitchens in Spain like. How large are refrigerator/freezers.
I have a cart too from Walmart, mine is metal so everyone can see in my cart but I don't care. It's the best thing ever! Annnd since I got it and moved to my apartment about 3 years ago, I've started seeing several people get them. :D btw I love these types of videos!
