This one is a dsi with a messed up touchscreen not a lite but you are right, I used the top screen in my GBA SP. Dsi top screens are known as a ita kit if you order them online as a mod for a gba sp. Decided to make it still work and now it is also a portable gba with the same really nice screen as what's is in my sp now. You have to mod a dsi since they can't play gba normally. They have issues with translated games and rom hacks. See my latest video I go by those rules when modding ds lites. DS lites are one of my favorite handheld. I try and bring back as many as I can and add modern charging with type c.
Dang do I really not have a video up showing how I did this? I've long since sold this Dsi so I'll have to wait till I get another good candidate. You can find some guides online, but its a bit more complicated than a dsixl. Same resistor size though. Pretty sure it's 330ohm 1/4watt but I would double check to make sure. I have used higher around 470ohm but you will run into issues being able to lower brightness if you do. One thing cool about dsi is you can hold select and press the volume keys to adjust brightness. Wish there was a hotkey on dslite like that.
You only need to add 5.1kohm resistors to the two middle cc1 and cc2 pins on these 6pin usb c connectors if you want to have usb c to c support vs just soldering the power and ground pins to have normal usb c to a. Ill have to try and make a video just about how I mod the usb c ports for install.
I don't see the point given that aftermarket shells or screens are cheap and readily available. You also have the Miyoo Mini plus or Anbernic RG35XX plus (or RG35XXH given the Macro is a horizontal config) for 50 dollars that will do what this does and more. We don't have a decent dual screen alternative to the DS family and they're outclassed by linux or android devices when using a single screen.
That's alright this mod isn't for most people, kind of a niche thing. You can get these for around $20 if you are willing to mod them yourself. I have loads of different emulation consoles in my collection but when it comes to gba my favorite mod is a dsi screen in a gameboy advance, I get the same screen with this and its as thin as my phone while in my pocket, that's the main reason I wanted to do this mod. I like to take this one on the go. The fact this can play ds games is just a plus. I have a dslite and a really nice condition light blue dsi that I play my ds games on, as you are right having two screens is better for ds games. One thing kinda cool is the SDcard is interchangeable between all my dsi consoles so it is as easy and moving the sdcard to play on the dual screen unit.
I could say that the port is square and not rectangular like a ds lite, but yeah it was kind of just hacked to fit. I cut a bit too much on the side closest to the card slot where I put the speaker. I have some more DSlites coming in the mail that I plan to macro mod since the have missing or busted top screens. Those make really good cheap GBA consoles. DS Lite is my favorite of the ds consoles.

Very little cutting needed on dslite since the port size is very close to type c. I have seen something like it done before, but they took the screen off the top and where trying to make a dsi xl that plays gba games by using a dslite mobo in a dsixl shell. Not sure how they managed to get the screen to work. Wish they released a DS Lite XL back in the day.
Yeah it's hard to record the difference. Most macros that use the stock speaker are barely audible at full volume so it's louder in comparison to that. This uses a IPhone 6s or similar loudspeaker.
I use a modded nds bootstrap that let's you switch screens with up and select and down and select. This dsi has been modded with twilight menu so I do not need the card slot anymore. I'll make a short showing off what i mean.
I was trying to find my childhood SP and DS Lite the other day. I remembered that the screens where broken on both of them and wanted to get them working again, probably what sparked my desire to fix up old broken consoles and modernize them with USB C. Too bad your parents don't have it, you could bring it back to life.
