  • This is the first ever Patreon-exclusive Substance walkthrough covering how I created the roofing tiles material for CC0Textures.com. The video is not a tutorial in the classic sense as I don't create the Material from scratch. This allows me to make these videos much quicker.

Gonna leave what I learned by messing around with settings to get the things he didn't explain much.
Tile Genarator Offset: Once you have the math nodes set up like in the video, you need to go to your Tile Generator node>Instance Parameters> You need to change the X and Y amount to "Expose as new graph input" in the drop down menu. Name it what you want. Then go back to the math nodes, grab a "Get Integer" and double-click it. There will be a drop down menu. Find it and input either the X or Y amount you named before.
    Blending the two Tile Generators:
Change the blending mode to "Max (Lighten)" and set opacity to 1. I had a hard time with this, hope this helps.
Gonna edit this once I am done with the video with what I learned that was not explained.
Also thanks for the video, I am using this to make a medieval style roof for a school project.

Thanks so much for this tutorial. I'm coming back to Designer after using it briefly for just one project 6 years ago; this tutorial gave me a whole bunch of useful nodes and techniques which I can apply from now on. Super concise and straightforward. Cheers

Terrific tutorial. A question rises for me, as a newbie: I see that you set a function for the cracks luminosity (min 4:20), and since there is a luminance randomization in the Tile Generator, my guess is that you want the cracks to somehow adapt their luninosity as to remain visible whatever the color of the tiles they're are applied to may be. Is this it? If so, could you explain how it's done? Is there a node that samples the color of the existing map? It would be very useful for my current project. Thanks!

how do you get your Tiles_Amount Variable?

Under the 'Instance Parameters', there is an icon above the value for things like sliders. In the 'tile generator', you will want to click that for the X and Y amount. This will bring up a menu titled 'Expose Parameters'. Click on the drop down menu titled 'Input Name', and select 'New'. This will bring up another window titled 'Enter Input Name'. This is where you can name anything you need. He titled these variables 'Tiles_Amount'. He did this for both the X and Y axis. Once you set one up, it should appear in the 'Input Names' menu, and it will appear as an option when you place integer variables.
      Hope that helped!

I tried to follow this step by step and I got completely lost. Not your fault, I'm just a beginner and overhwhelemd.
