I remember when Jackass was blamed for a teen who pour gasoline on himself and set fire to himself. The parents said he copied a stunt from the show but none of the members of Jackass ever performed such a stunt
He probably never got over the break up of his girlfriend at the time. So, he committed suicide by doing just that, pour gasoline before setting himself on fire, which is a severely painful way to die.
It would be stupid to blame jackass cause at the start of the show they say "warning the stunts in this movie were performed by professionals so for your safety and the protection of those around you do not attempt any of the stunts ur about to see"
For me, Beavis and Butthead was no more violent than what they would show in old Tom and Jerry and Looney Tunes cartoons. The only difference was the parents actually watched these cartoons with their kids and were able to really educate them and put so much into perspective.

I wasn't allowed to watch this show until I was 13, and even that was a little too young. Besides, what kind of five year old knows how to start a fire? I agree with you wholeheartedly. The only are where I think MTV might've fucked up is running the early airings an hour before even primetime shows started (7pm ET). At least if they'd been running them at 8 ET or later they could point out all the stuff the major networks (CBS, NBC, and ABC) were getting away with at that time since you'd see explosions, car crashes, and fighting in dramas although dramas seemed to mostly be aired later on in the night as opposed to the 8 PM slot. This was still 3 or 4 years before TV started having ratings like the movies do so they could've saved themselves some trouble with some policing but I guess edginess is part of the allure in chasing ratings and ad revenue so maybe they'd have looked like they were half-assing it had they warned ppl.
Tom and Jerry were like Beavis and Butthead in a way, but they're animals. And we know in real life, animals (even for a TV cartoon) cannot commit nursery crimes like human beings do. Imagine a mouse in real life holding a 2 x 4 piece of wood and smacking the real of a cat with it as it has been done by Tom and Jerry. That and Woody Woodpecker, Bugs Bunny, Mighty Mouse, Underdog, Rocky and Bullwinkle. They are all fantasies. Apparently Austin Messner (the kid who started the fire) later confirmed back in 2008 saying that he DID NOT have cable TV growing up and his mom was a drug addict at the time and she had lighters so Austin thought it would be cool to set his bed on fire which he said again he did not watch Beavis and Butt-Head because of cable TV being unavailable at the time.

I was 10 years old I turned 11 in 93 I am now 38 years old going to be 39 this year never once have I tried to copy anything Beavis and Butt-head did Burning things throwing bowling balls off of overpasses putting my dog in a washing machine or anything else of that nature now Beavis and Butthead was "Family Time" for me and my stepdad he would tell me it's on or vice versa and we would watch it together I say again I was five years older than the kid in the story who set his trailer on fire my heart goes out to him and his family but you can't tell me that good parents let their five-year-old watch a show called Beavis and Butthead my parents weren't the greatest they smoked cigarettes drank beer and whiskey smoked weed and when they were younger did other drugs but I can say in all honesty I turned out fine even watching shows like Beavis and Butthead

Looney Tunes cartoons are really violent too. Worse than Beavis & Butthead.

What's more concerning are those teens hugged up on camera! Do they want purity culture or not. Can't complain about this hilarious show then use your reaearch footage to highlight a much bigger issue if you wanted the original concern to have any chance at making an impact.

I don't remember Beavis and Butthead being this popular in 1993, than again, I was in the Navy and away a lot with no internet and no contact with the outside world in those days.
I got hooked on Beavis and Butthead when one of my Dad’s Coworker’s Teen Daughter when he was in the Air Force and I was living in a Trailer Park! I was 11 Years old and I’m glad that I am Smart not to do something like that 5 Year Kid did 30 years ago and What In the name of God would a Mother let her 5 year son watch Beavis and Butthead and she and her Son are going live though that Trauma of losing the Mother’s 2 Year old Daughter for the Rest of the Family’s Lives!

Sadly people don't touch their kids right from wrong. Don't ban the show teach your kids dont do atupid things and not let them watch beavis and butthead knowing its not suitable for young viewers. Have them watch stuff from pbs kids nickelodeon nick jr cartoon network disney channel playhouse disney also known as disney jr not stuff from adult swim mtv and such. Parents should teach them, im glad the one mom did and knowing the poor 2 year old girl will never have the chance to grow up after the fire incident. Crueltly to animals setting things on fire and hurting others is wrong. Beavis and butthead should've aired on a night were kids are asleep same with kther adult cartoons. Its ok to watch adult cartoons as a well educated adult but its not for kids so don't copy off everything from cartoons movies anime video games anime or anything like that
