So when Beavis and Butt-Head appear on stage, are the audience members just looking at a screen or something?
Most likely. They film the stage and animate them in after. They are either were told to look like they were up there or watched a screen of the same footage we see at home.
The footage had already been shot, so the actors were watching screens when they were presenting. Nobody was onstage except the woman who gave the award. The laughter/reaction was real and spot on as you could hear when Butthead slapped Beavis. Most of these actors don't have a sense of humor though. 2:24 is Tommy Lee Jones looking bored and disappointed like he doesn't care. During this time the older generation really didn't care for them and didn't realize how popular and famous they were until they got their own movie.
Tommy Lee Jones and probably most of the audience thought it was stupid having cartoon characters present an oscar.
And here's the kicker: Beavis & Buthead were the smartest, and most genuine people there...... by a mile!
Mike Judge has always been a prophet for our times. Little did we know in 1997, that by 2022, there really *would* be people striking others in the face onstage at the Oscars.

Since that year I used to think the movie _Mission Impossible_ should have won this award or at least had been nominated. But not today. A short time ago I had classes about sound effects editing, from the foley to the editing itself, including banks of sounds. If the Academy had started to choose five nominees that year, even so I don't think _Mission Impossible_ would have been nominated. I know there were the movies _Independence Day_ and _The Rock._ However, in a 5 nominee category, I believe that the other 2 nominated movies would have been _Twister_ and _The English Patient._ I do believe it.
