    So that's why my ROG Z390-E came with a VRM heatsink fan mount and 40mm fan. I did install it but I didn't think it would actually be that useful.

      If your worried about VRM thermals - pull the blingy plastic IO guards off - 2-3 screws and it frees up the entire top/back of the VRM heat sink for airflow. Did that on my Z390-E and it never goes over 60C without the included 40mm installed. Running a DH15 with the middle fan mounted low as it can go - lots of air flows to that area.

    A CPU cooler that blows air downwards will actually cool the VRMs too, that's why this problem occurs with AIOs and tower based heatsinks. That's why my top mounted radiator is set to pull air into the case and out the back fan so that there's decent airflow over the VRMs.

    Do you think the VRM fan on the Arctic Liquid Freezer II is sufficient for cooling a VRM?

    • @techie0075
      @techie0075 3 роки тому

      Absolutely not-it is a mere gimmick, JUST good enough to show some improvement on reviewers' temp charts, but not good enough to make any real world difference. I am running an i7-10700k on an Asrock Z490 phantom gaming 4/ax motherboard with the Arctic Liquid Freezer II 280, and while the ALF is easily outperforming the Grand Macho RT (which outperforms the Noctua NH-D15S), the system settles out at a paltry 140w continuous on the CPU due to VRM throttling! I have tried both with and without its VRM fan, and noticed no appreciable difference. Meanwhile, the Macho can do ~190w and the Noctua ~150w continuous on the same system, both topping out with CPU thermal throttling. It looks like the ALF could easily do >225w if the VRM stayed cool, but without that CPU "underflow" air from an air cooler, the VRM cooks. Case fans barely help; the air needs to be high-speed directly across the tiny VRM heatsinks, something that the oversized Macho and Noctua fans (which blow over the top and under the bottom of the heatsink) do very well.

    I was curious about how to actively cool the VRM and the chipsets. didnt know if these little fans would make a loud whirring sound and some might. but I know they have some quiet ones out there.. a couple of ideas and notes Id add to this however.
    for making a bracket this sort of thing is where I shine. you can go as simple as making a bent wire brace out of stiff bailing wire which you could even slide the mounting holes onto then you can make the bracket hold onto something on the back side of the case. then you have the 3D printer option, making sure to use material that is heat resistant... you dont want it to droop.. you can sketch up the base design on poster-board stock then take measurements. then there is another method of taking thin aluminum or tin sheets bending and punching/drilling/dremil small holes where needed. then paint afterwards with some cheap "heat resistant" krylon spray paint.
    also in cases with air cooling I would make sure to push air from bottom up as you are likely to have fans pulling air in that direction and you wouldn't want to fight that wind current, you could stagnate the air and create more of a problem. even with an AIO I might do this to keep with flow direction. this will also direct all heat up and out or out the back of the case giving you a better ambient inside the case, meaning ALL your temps will be lower.

  • @DRIIC-qw8us
    @DRIIC-qw8us 3 роки тому

    Sure, fixing a fan can help but the fundamental problem here, as with most cases is that CPU cooler mounted at the top. You're trying to cool the CPU with (100C!) hot air coming from the VRMs, GPU and RAM. The result is a hot CPU, hot radiator with loud fans. The whole area at the top of the case just gets hotter and hotter.
    The optimal solution is a front mounted radiator for the CPU, pulling in cold air. At the top, just an exhaust fan. This will help all that hot air from the VRMs, GPU and RAM to escape.

    I'm thinking of doing that to my x570 taichi. Its tiny fan is so loud, but the temps don't get low even with high rpms.

      kousaka san On my X570 Taichi I have made a custom fan curve for the chipset fan. It does not turn on until the chipset reaches 65C. The good news is thanks to the airflow from my case fans and GPU never let it reach that point. My VRM temperatures never go over 45C when running a 3900X.

      @@stevenbradford6138 I have good airflow. but 2080 ti sits right over the board. I that's why I could use a larger fan blowing in from the side

    Very informative, thank you.
    My vrm run between 25 idle and 35-45 (winter/summer) with full load prime 95. It hurts to see 110° :c

      Are you water cooling it or are the sensors broken?

      @@ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking Ek monoblock for X470 Taichi on them.
      I think i killed my first X370 Pro carbon when i switched to full watercooling loop with no airflow (7-800rpm fan fixed, big rads, big case), didn't mind them and it just died (the mobo, the 2700x is fine) while trying some oc configs. I was dumb, i didn't knew you at the time and i didn't tought about VRM temps or the airflow.
      The airflow is so low that i had to put an ek heatsink even on the NVME SSD (it is a 970 evo, not a newer one with the heatsink already installed on it) because he went throttling (summer here is hot 30-35°) while videoediting and stuff, reached 87-90° degrees on one sensor and around 60 on the other. I didn't realize why the encoding time was so shitty until i looked at the drive's temps.
      At the time i was dumber and thought the only two things that need airflow were CPU and GPU. That's how i found you, while looking for the new mobo one year ago c:
      Thank you for your work and dedication.

    I'm pretty sure the temp is fine in a case with normal airflow, a test bench with a watercooled cpu is worst case scenario i would think

      the VRM area of a motherboard tends to be a complete airflow dead zone. Which is also why when I did in case VRM testing most low end motherboards still overheat unless you do something weird like run your rear fans as intake.

      @@ActuallyHardcoreOverclocking Its weird. while stress testing with prime95, 9700k@5ghz 1.3V VRM temp never went above 70C. and another question is msi z390i gamiing would overclock better than this board or no?

      Any PC hardware store that sells desktop components such as cases and fans will have them. Electric component stores only have industrial ones that are to loud.

      Go for the Noctua fan. They're quiet and reliable. There's a 3 pin, a 4 pin, and a 5v fan, so just make sure you get the right one for your application.

    As a tinkerer of many junk, I often shudder at the thought of zip ties never being invented.
    Making proper brackets for every damned project would probably made me into someone who buys imacs for msrp and think I'm techy and cool.
