Kender are halflings in Dragon lance BTW Theo, not gnomes...... Originally they were kleptomaniacs as well but I think Wizards changed that lore unfortunately because they felt it was problematic
A truly great review Theo - thank you so much! My original D&D playing days had paused when Dragonlance first came to prominence (yes, I am that old); sure I am aware of DL but never sought it out to play. In recent years I am back in the D&D saddle and am inspired by our video to pick up the adventure. Thank you!
Great video. I'll get the deluxe edition at leadt. But a heads up! Theres one detail not updated to D&D Beyond info. Just watched Nerd Immersions walkthrough of past and current arcana for say the Moon phases spell class distribution. On updated Beyond, the New moon have actually Enchantment and Necromancy, in physical books its Evocation and Necromancy. For Crescent moon phase its in the books Illusion and Divination but should be Illusion and Transmutation
Not sure if its been mentioned here, but DMs Guild has a Dragonlance Companion book available, that has more lore and options. Just ordered my print copy today
First off, thanks for the great review. I've been wishy-washy on what I want to do about this. In thinking about this comment, I realized it is almost exactly (couldn't tell you what month it was, but it was during the 92/93 school year) 30 years since my best friend in junior high was telling me about this dwarf trying to get into a boat while people shot arrows at the party in the book he found in the school library. He made it sound interesting, so when he returned it, I quickly grabbed it up, and began reading. (then when I had to return it unfinished, I bought my copy of all three Chronicle books. Starting a long time reading of almost exclusively DragonLance stuff.) I did not own any of the roleplaying stuff until they released it for 3rd edition, but I played the SSI goldbox games, and really just lost myself in the stories. By the time it was out for 3e, I had already found myself deep in a homebrew campaign with friends, so I've never actually played on Krynn. I very-likely will never run this adventure, though with the board game addition, it sounds fun, and I just may (especially being able to bring in your own character as the DM, that sounds like just the amount of playing I may need to keep me going sometimes) I could go on for far too long on why I was afraid I wont be happy with what they did to DragonLance....but your review makes it seem like I may enjoy it just enough, and I can always change a few things around to make it more traditional.
I love Dragon lance. Pre-ordered all the goodies. Very thorough content as always. (Side note, just a personal opinion, would prefer if music wasn't playing while you were talking. If it works for you guys and your channel all the power to you. I'll still watch). Always enjoy your content keep up the great videos.
Thanks for the extensive review of the book Theo! I am mostly familiar with Dragonlance from the Margaret T. Weis books and that not-so-great animated movie (if you ever feel like trying to review movies, it is a good choice for a bad one to start with! ;) ). I feel this new book has less setting than Ravenloft or Spelljammer did, and puts far more focus on the adventure, at least page-number-wise. The areas we visit are very well established and described, sure, but I feel the book puts little focus on the world as a whole. Important races of Krynn, like the Minotaur kingdoms or the Irda (High Ogres, basically blue-skinned intelligent and gentle noble creatures) are not even described or mentioned (at least from what I have seen in previews). My other main gripe is the really short Monster Manual entry, which barely has any unique Dragonlance creatures. The Anhkolox (a variant of the Gholor from 2E-3E) is really the only one, Istarian Drones and Death Dragons are a new 5E creation, and while I quite like them, wish we had gotten more. Dragonlance has a lot of unique Dragons, many water-themed, creepy undead elves who are just floating eyes and claws, adorable KoDragons (cute little furry big-eyed things), Eyewings that attack with acidic tears, gigantic flaming Skeletons, sand Crocodiles, Shadowperson (they were basically a pre-Spelljammer version of the Hadozee), Walrus people, and my favourite weirdest race ever, the Taylings/Taylands: binary bonded twin brothers/sisters, where the Taylings look like Elves, while the Taylands look like bestial animal-like humanoids. They are so attached to each other that should one die, the other would soon follow. Anyway, I am grateful that WotC brought back this setting at least for the new minis this gets us of important characters like Lord Soth and a lot of mounted Dragons.
Fantastic, thank you for the review Theo. I think D&D have been knocking it out of the park with their adventures in 5e, and I think this looks like a great continuation. Definitely will be picking up the version with the boardgame. Krynn was my favourite setting pre-5e and I even loved the Third Age edition with cards used instead of dice. It’s just such a lore rich environment and I found stories like the Sylvanesti shield and trapped dragon so enticing. I flip back and forth between wanting more D&D books (like lore books) and then remembering how awful it was in 3.5 and 4e being a fan of something that had Paizo levels of output. I’m loving the quality over quantity but… maybe moving from 4-5 books a year to 7-8 would be a happy medium.
That's really awesome! I wish I had been in the hobby for the older editions! I would love to look at those older versions of Dragonlance one day! Yeah, I understand about the pain of keeping up with the books, though I appreciate Paizo indicating that all the current books are optional. And I like that they're region specific. If you're not interested in a certain region, you can skip those 3-4 books and wait until the next wave. -Theo

This is a great review Theo. I am not sure how I feel about the "board game". I bought this preorder and it seems to be lacking for the price. However, I do see how it will add another dimension in the game. Please do a full review of the board game.
Would love a video on Kingdoms, Organizations and Warfare. Curious to see what you think of it and how easy it is/isn't to teach to players. Edit: It's actually been a little bit since I watched a video from you, but your video production/presentation has gotten very professional, very good job on this one.
Am playing this campaign currently and am about 12 hours in. I avoided the spoiler sections so I don't know if these are things you addressed, but my preliminary thoughts are these (no story spoilers below but I do discuss encounter balance, enemy damage/abilities, and party composition). I should also preface this by saying that I am really enjoying the campaign so far! These are just things I wish I knew before I started. Early level combat can be a real mess if you are a melee-centric party. Nearly every single enemy you face even when you're at level 1 gets multiple melee attacks per turn, and the majority of them will also apply a status effect (and later, will do direct damage) in a radius when they die. So I hope you like rolling saving throws continously to see if you get to spend your turns doing nothing. Save yourself hours of headache and bring a bow/eldritch blast/etc. Speaking of saving throws, the battlefield random events each turn are neat on paper but irritating in practice because they just straight up override anything you've been doing to be careful on the battlefield. Worked really hard to get a defensible position, good sightlines, and map control? Too bad, a dice roll decided that somebody just staggers out of nowhere and stabs/shoots/blows up one of your randomly chosen characters. In a similar vein, there is one specific encounter in the early game where it is quite possible for a single high roll on the DM's part to do a TPK if you don't happen to be spread out enough. We were lucky and only lost one character--our level 3 barbarian was at full health but ate 5d10 to the face from 60 feet away. Balance-wise that seems a bit spicy to me (especially given it came late in a series of like 5-6 encounters with no ability to rest and restore spells/rages/etc). But, once again, a ranged party would not have even been in danger.
1. Good Review. 2. Can a Home Brewer use the boardgame scenarios / rules to make War based campaigns? Or do you believe it's too specific to the DragonLance situation?
You would probably have to create a lot of homebrew cards and write your own scenarios. A lot of work but it COULD be done as the basic game mechanics have a lot of potential for expansions. Perhaps WOTc might get around to releasing some official expansions sometime. Unofficially, some of the old TSR Dragonlance modules have some content intended for the old Battlesystem wargame that could be mined for background information and scenario ideas.

Kender most will agree on but I am sure people will be getting their pitchforks and torches when they hear that the dwarves in Krynn were gnomes who got twisted by the greygem. I'm going to explain my take on why the lore in so many settings is so light now compared to the rich and wonderful world building the settings were once known for. Im really really truly gonna try to not go on some grognard rant here I promise. Several settings are considered extremely problematic now and WOTC has made no secret that for every writer there are now 3 or 4 People hired to make sure there are no problematic content. Honestly if someone is extremely scared to push boundaries then you are going to get the most vanilla option possible , true art needs to challenge our perception and beliefs, this can't be done if your scared constantly that you will create something nobody in the world will be offended by (which is a losing battle before you even start). This is why we can't have nice things Theo. Dragonlance is a setting based partly with Mormon mythology integrated because both Hickman and Weiss are Mormons. The fact that the Gods of Krynn play such an integral part of the setting that many of the creative types working at current Wizards despise what the setting was so I have been extremely worried how the setting would be handled after what Jessica Price did to Ravenloft. Lord Soth is one of D&D's most tragic and iconic villains, I wanted so badly for his backstory to stay true to the wonderful lore he was originally given. Yes I'm a grognard, a dinosaur, a relic of the past but I wouldn't give up my love for the old lore for anything, I just wish I could share this beautiful setting with new players untouched by modernization of something I'm so passionate about!
I haven't been a fan of their more recent stuff, so it would really be a breath of fresh air if this module expanded on an existing setting, revitalizing and reintroducing the old familiar without removing the existing history or cultures. Instead finsing ways of making the conventions of the setting playable with the 5e rulebook and adapting out the modern take on the races and classes to better match what you would find in the DragonLance setting. I don't think there's anything particularly wrong with being a grognard. The new players in the hobby should be taking their lead of how to play from the veterans, because they are being adopted into an existing culture. Yes, the new generation helps decide what path the hobby takes to better fit their interests, but they shouldn't be getting into D&D if they don't already love it the way it is. They'd be better off building their own new settings, races, classes, or gaming systems if they don't like what was already in the game before they joined. Maybe then we'd see new settings get introduced which reflect the sentiments of some of those players and writers who have only joined tabletop roleplaying in the last five years while still having new adventures in older settings which retain the tone and sensabilities with which those settings were originally created.
Yeah! Pathfinder (and even Starfinder) does this all the time. Not sure why we don't have a true high level D&D adventure that could pick up after the conclusion of other adventures. -Theo
I'm upset, because WotC cancelled entire polish line of D&D. Not all of my players understand english and even if, we play in the same language as we speak. If I want to play this, I would need to sit down and translate ALL OF IT myself.

Would love some campaign books that start at level 10 and goes to 20. Progress characters through multiple stories.
Id argue that dragonlance is a more iconic setting than faerun, and greyhawk ks the proper dnd setting. Faerun is rather basic and boring.
Fair. I guess it largely depends on when you came into the hobby.
Got this to play, but this new artwork is generic crap.
This is a good review, but I am not a fan of your thumbnail.
Oh! I’m open to feedback. -Theo
Sorcerer is OP and broken!
