Your son must've been a sensitive soul. Perhaps too good for this world. I lost a son too and that's what I like to think and believe. He dwells someplace else; someplace better and you will see him again. Bless...

I first heard this song when I went to watch Riverdance in Dublin and it brought me to tears. Even after all these years it still does. I find it so beautiful and it touches my soul in such a way that I cannot even put it into words. ☘️

When my father first heard this song, I watched as his eyes grew wide and he just sat there silently crying until he was shaking trying to hold it in.
I now have the same reaction every time I listen to it. Rest in peace.

I was in Ireland two months ago and I first heard this beautiful piece being played by a talented man at the Glendalough monastery. At that moment, I fell in love with Ireland and never wanted to leave. Just listening to this takes me back. Ever since that moment, hearing this song makes me proud to have a quarter of Irish blood in my veins. Hope I can make a second journey very soon. Much love from New York City!

My grandfather requested this be played when they spread his ashes into the body of water of which he wanted to be spread in. He died before he got a chance to make it to my wedding so my family played it randomly without my knowledge at my ceremony and i completely lost it. Half the people that were there that werent even of celtic descent started crying as well. The most beautiful and powerful song ive ever heard :-)

This beautiful lament, played wonderfully on the Ullean pipes, cries out deeply to those with a spot of Scottish or Irish blood in their veins. It touches the collective core or who we are. But aside from that, it is a beautiful lament to all who chance to hear it, in this case, a lament to a son.
We can only lament the past. We can’t lament the future. It is proper from time to time, in this human condition, to lament our past. Whether it be of loved ones gone on, loves lost, special times of our lives, events or special places…..we all lament, and it is good.
But as the strains of this touching song fade at the end, it is a perfect reminder that, like this song, there is a time for the lament to end, and to once again turn from the past…carrying with us the beauty and memories, but focusing on that which we can’t lament.
The future is unwritten, so we must boldly and bravely journey forward with hope and aspirations, and a touch of the knowledge that our lives, actions and deeds may be part of someone else’s lament in years to come. Make it a lament that will make those who remember also smile through their tears.

I love this song/tune. Music was not part of my life until after I turned 69 years old. Then I taught myself to play the GHB, the SSP, the Native American flute and the Irish tin whistle, in that order. I am now 72 and I am playing the first 3 minutes of this tune on my tin whistle in key D. I will soon have the entire piece memorized. I will be so proud to have accomplished this personal challenge. Thank you, Davy Spillane for creating this masterpiece.

I'm an electronic music fan mainly, but the Irish Uilleann Pipes are truly beautiful.
These Uilleann masters literally have to work the sound out of them every second of a performance to create such emotion. When combined with orchestration as here the result transcends music. Truly magical.

Seamus Ennis' tutor is the best, and if your handy with hand tools and a lathe, have accurate rifle bores. can weld, braize and bend metals; and if you can find a copy which I am lucky enough to proudly own, Wilbert Garvin wrote "the" book on how to make a set from scratch. Good luck. They must be the most haunting instrument the ingenuity of man has ever devised. I'd give a dangle berry for a full set with regulators.I've made some superb fiddles, but those pipes are a tough order to knock up.

I may be deceived once again,
yet still I go to that stone on the point by the lake waiting to hear the whisper of footsteps. "Nay, laddie, it's not love that deceives but the wicked empty heart that loses it's truth and shatters its icy shell again and again and again, to awaken no more in the place we had come to know."
It's the voice repeating, "It is gone, it is gone", that deceives.

All the people saying "music from god" and "god this and that" ect. --> This type of music derived from pagan people, ages old, with instruments crafted by masterminds of old times without the shackles of monotheism. You're spitting into the faces of the people who brought forth this kind of art, by claiming it to be inspired by the god whose fellowship has killed the very people, whose culture and art you admire. The people who developed this, did not believe in your god, they were free pagans. At least pay a certain amount of respect to germanic and celtic culture, without calling your religion into it, which didn't even exist at that time.
I mean, come on, people... the name of this piece is The lament of Cú Chulainn, and Cú Chulainn is a figure of irish celtic mythology...

    • @gmac072

Sorry, mate. God has us both covered. Whether it's my silly notion that all things good come from a loving creator or your idea that an association with that Creator somehow maligns the lives, work, and memories of your fathers, we both are giving profound respect to God and humankind.
I am deeply sorry that what I've done here has hurt and offended you (or anyone.) If it will help and if it's your wish, I can remove the video so that no further damage will be done.
      Regards,
      gmac

First of all, you are a person of the 20th/21st century. You were not there when this all got started. So, what you know is what you have read. At best, your knowledge is from second and third hand accounts. You are not in authority to tell people how to interpret what one hears in a piece of music. So what if people interject the word god into this particular type of music. God has different meanings to different people. You are presumptuous to think that god has only one meaning. You should have addressed the person or persons who made such claims and asked them why do they have the need to put god into the mix. Then and only then can a discussion begin. Just saying.

To any Scots listening to this who mistake it for Scottish - this is an IRISH song about an IRISH legend (Cú Chulann), played by an IRISH man (Davy Spillane) using an IRISH instrument (the uileann pipes), so your 'Scottish pride' when hearing this is VERY much misplaced.

@@janishannes9221 You see, the 'Celts are Celts' line doesn't fly with me. The Ulster Plantation was formed by Scottish as well as English settlers who stole the land from the Irish. That's why the Irish resentment to the English alone has always puzzled me. The Scots displaced the Irish just as the English did, but Ireland lets them off, 'Scott-free' for it.
Secondly, I know the Scotts love their bagpipes, but they sound God-awful to the rest of us. The uileann pipes produce a softer and much more melodious sound, and the Irish don't use them to wage a brutal assault on the ears of anyone around them, unlike the Scotts. There's something aggressive about the bagpipes, and they're still used today by Orange men on their marches through Catholic neighbourhoods in Northern Ireland, to intimidate Irish Catholics.
Above all else, as I said, they sound shite.

Stunningly melancholic music about Cú Chulainn who was a famous warrior from Irish mythology who is sad because he has killed his son in battle. The piece was written by Bill Whelan and masterfully played here by Davy Spillane. One thing i find strange is your use of the truly beautiful Scottish castle Eilean Donan instead of one of 30,000 irish castles (fair enough a lot of them are in ruins plus the Cú Chulainn story has strong links to
    Scotland) 😃😃
Nevertheless thank you for sharing this music and the images of Eilean Donan Castle which is a truly amazing place

There's even a place in Dundalk that is sometimes referred to as "Cú Chulainn's castle" though, admittedly, it's not as scenic as this Scottish one. Geographically, Dundalk makes more sense.

      @Paleos1000 9 років тому +1

+Matt Hall The song is the lament of the hero cu Chulainn. The story comes from a series of myths and legends called the Ulster Cycle. In the final section of the story there is a battle where Chulainn fights and kills a young warrior. Chulainn later discovers the warrior is his son, and this song is his lament. (Having sons of my own , the sound of it tends to hit home, and it probably touches something of my own Celtic blood as well.) There are all sorts of nefarious goings on that lead to this terrible accident taking place. The cycle is a great read. There is a nicely written children's version by Rosemary Sutcliff, which I still read despite being in my fifties now. I hope this helps

Cú Chulainn, also spelt Cú Chulaind or Cúchulainn, Irish for "Culann's Hound" and sometimes known in English as Cuhullin, is an Irish mythological hero who appears in the stories of the Ulster Cycle, as well as in Scottish and Manx folklore. In Cú Chulainn's youth he is so beautiful the Ulstermen worry that, without a wife of his own, he will steal their wives and ruin their daughters. They search all over Ireland for a suitable wife for him, but he will have none but Emer, daughter of Forgall Monach. However, Forgall is opposed to the match. He suggests that Cú Chulainn should train in arms with the renowned warrior-woman Scáthach in the land of Alba (Scotland), hoping the ordeal will be too much for him and he will be killed. Cú Chulainn takes up the challenge, travelling to her residence Dún Scáith (Fortress of Shadows) on the Isle of Skye. As such Cuchulainn (born Setanta) was born in Ireland, but raised in Scotland for a number of years. Western Scotland was part of a kingdom called Dal Riada, which encompassed most of the eastern part of Northern Ireland and the western shores (and islands) of western Scotland. As such, the tale of Cuchulainn does belong to the history of Ireland, and Scotland, and Manannan (Isle of Man), which were all Irish Kingdoms at one time or another, hence the mutual culture, language and music. End of story -- (While Cuchulainn is common to the mythology of Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of man, the tune is not 'traditional', it was written by Bill Whelan, as part of the music for the interval show for the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest. Ireland had won the contest the previous year and Moya Doherty, a producer with RTE (Irish Television) was given the task of coming up with an interval act for the show -- it was Moya Doherty who saw previous film of Michael Flatley (ua-cam.com/video/auYkScAuYSI/v-deo.html) and Jean Butler (ua-cam.com/video/ZbHNV7e2cJo/v-deo.html) dancing in shows performed by The Chieftains, sometimes both in the same show (ua-cam.com/video/NneLbWB0b7o/v-deo.html) and came up with the idea of a modern dance show, based on traditional Irish dance and music. She engaged Bill Whelan to write the music for the show, which debuted as the interval act on Eurovision, but had it's first full showing, as an entity of it's own, in 1995, at the Point Depot (Now the 3Arena) in Dublin.) Michael Flatley later would go on to have other shows written, in which he would become better known in his own right, although he previously admitted that it was the Chieftains who gave him the start and the many opportunities to perfom Irish dance. (ua-cam.com/video/xOzhjhYOWXY/v-deo.html). ps, He would even get a 'bit part' on Britain's Got Talent (ua-cam.com/video/8WKhPKL0Tx8/v-deo.html).

A lament. This piece performed with so much expression by Spillane instantly evoked an image in my mind- of an old woman losing her last Son in war, alone and wailing in her empty home as she struggles to function with life's most basic, now grueling, chores. I see faded lyrics above as I write this long overdue message, suggesting my image may be "wrong," but I learned from this what a lament is to me- having never known the form before- and realizing it speaks (or should) to the core of us all, as we ride the sometimes painful waves of life. Just incredible.
