- Here is a brief tutorial on how to get a character that is level 39 to level 99 in one battle.
Party and gear choices:
The party was chosen to meet these standards: 3 people + the level 39 so the level 39 can stay in the back row.
Hero- Cannot remove. Equipped with fury, double-beat runes (to maximize killing power against enemies and himself), and a fire lizard rune on his weapon so he will kill himself attacking the enemies (as he becomes quite difficult to kill at high levels).
Chaco- Fodder.
Clive- Clive was chosen because he's fairly fast and can snipe off the archers in the back before they attack the level 39.
Eilie- The character being boosted to 99. Her gear is mostly high defense stuff, and her runes are Earth(more defense) and Fire(killing power).
The enemies: The group you'll want to fight consists of 2 Highlands with bows, 2 Highlands with swords, 1 Highlands with a spear, and a Commander. I believe this is the easiest setup for the 39 to win against. Then all you have to do is win the battle, the video is of the strategy I used for Eilie. For melee characters or characters with one or no rune slots, it is a little different.
Suikoden will always be one of the best rpgs.
For me, its the best already haha.
Played the game many times, never tried the level up glitches though.

Only short-ranged characters have attack restrictions in this one. Usually the long range characters are weaker though, so you wouldn't want them up front anyway.
You know how to make this process easier?
USE BLUE GATE RUNE. Have everyone at less than 100hp except for the one levelling up who should have full HP, then summon the highest level magic for the rune. Everyone dies except for the one levelling up, then you can have the lvl 99 character have low hp, and cure with med the next candidate, casta again, lvl up, repeat until mp runs out.
Thanks. I got the fire-lizard rune from the Sindar ruins behind the White-Deer Inn. You technically don't need it, but it makes it a lot easier if the Hero isn't dodging and countering all the enemies when you're trying to kill him off.
@blob1024 The level up count is not capped. To train most of the 108 stars, I would always take only one of them with Hero, and then I'd simply have Hero cast a spell like "Charm Arrow" (Resurrection rune) on a large group of enemies.
I remember that in Rockaxe castle, a level 41 character would jump to level 66 or so (without the Fortune rune) when I battled 6 Matilda knights this way. I also got some characters to reach level 99 by using aldritz13's method in L'Renouille. It's not capped ;).
True. I believe Suik 1 was also one of the earliest RPG's for PSX.
Like Hell it is! this is one of the most valuable games out there and for no good reason. I downloaded and played it on emulator and my personal opinion is that people only say it's good is because it's rare.
This happened to me accidentally with Millie while I was using the Matilda border glitch. Had a level 99 character before my frist trip to Muse, was pretty cool.
Yeah, there are a couple of things you can get so Riou takes the hits- Skunk runes, mole suit, and the blue ribbon accessory. However my problem was that Riou was dodging everything and counter attacking all the melee, so the fire lizard rune was the best choice for me.
The best way to do this, equip Hero with Fire Sealing Rune (weapon) since half the damage delt goes to him, then put a Shredding Scroll on the character you want to level up when you don't have one, have Raura make 2. BTW best place is in Tenzan Pass, you need to fight 6 ¿ñ '0 or the Minotauraus look-a-like. Defend on the other characrter then have Hero attack until he dies. After Hero is dead, use the scroll to kill remaining monsters. Don't pess X while leveling up because it might not work.
@iceman031988 This trick is available only for level 39 characters, level 49 if you have a Fortune Rune. Guardian Deity combination is Rabbit/Turtle/Rabbit/Turtle.
There are high level characters like Genshu who is already level 49 at recruitment, but does not have any free rune slot, rendering this trick impossible for his case.
Another way to do this, even before L'Renouille, is to take Futch and Humphrey to Mt. Rakutei after the liberation of Rockaxe and fight a group of 6 Pixies.

Don't forget to equip Fortune Rune on the character you want to level up. You can get it from you Diety, Rabbit head and legs then Turtle body and tail. Level 49 will go up to 99 then level 50 with 990 exp will go up to 89 with 990 exp.
They normally do, but not nearly as much as people would normally think. Every RPG ive played had people doing Low Lvl runs/no sphere grid/no license board/starting equipment only/etc.
The person that beat FFI with lvl 8 chars died well over 300 times on just the final level/boss. I just wanted to give an example of low level games.
@Darkzeven66 There is a door that leads to the Matilda area above muse, with 2 knights around it. If you walk up to this door, you can actually push the door out of the frame, and enter that area. I got to level 80 from killing a group of 6 enemies with Riou by himself at a very low level (like 12-18) on the mountain where go with futch and humphrey.
This is my go-to video when I want to remind myself of how lol-tastic the experience distribution is in the game.

An alternative to this is just taking Riou(hero) and the lvl.39 to battle. Give Riou the firefly rune(dropped by air lizards in the path to Tigermouth) so all the enemies just attack him and double-beat so they do more dmg. Then, give the lvl.39 char. a bunch of denfense stuff and a wind rune. I find 'the shredding' better than the fire runes, but either way it kills em all off. I got a bunch of chars. to 99 this way.
The Fire Lizard rune on Riou's weapon is what killed him. He was too hard to kill for the enemies, so that was there to speed things up.

Your desired character should be level 49 and with a Fortune Rune equipped to shoot up to level 99.
There are also characters that may join you at level 99 due to a bug that affects characters whose levels are based on the hero's level. These are Hoi, Long Chan Chan, Mazus, Pesmerga, and Georg Prime.
Go in a battle with Six highland soldiers in L'Renouille or in the secret path in Rockaxe. Then have everyone except the person you want to level up to level 99 be unconscious (zero HP). And have that person kill the six highland soldiers. Then it should work. But, the character has to be level 49 or under.
This game is one that never ever needed leveling. Possibly the easiest RPG around IMO. Don't get me wrong though, 11 years on and it's still my favourite RPG of all time.
i thought the level cap was 65, that last boss was so hard for me. this is honestly the best rpg i've ever played.

leveling is almost never required. With a good strategy most all bosses can go down with relatively low levels. Ive heard of a game beaten by lvl 8 characters (the original FF).
that's because you don't have the desire to be strong ;). I do have that feeling. STRENGHT counts.

There are certain characters that a glitched that will sometimes join at level 99. This has never happened to me, but I've heard it can occur with Georg, Hoi, Pesmergia, and some others.
There is a laundry list of reasons why the later Suikoden games had problems. But the two biggest things that happened to the series is the creator left after development of Suikoden III and Konami execs never gave the series the full development or marketing support it should have gotten. If I had to put money on it, I'd say higher ups in Konami forced the PS2 Suikoden games to go 3D because they thought the market was heading that way. Remember, Suikoden III was one of the earliest PS2 RPGs
True RPG gamers like to watch the Exp count down
It always takes 1000 exp to level. When you win the battle, the game calculates exp based on the party member's current level (so she ends up getting ~60000exp total).
I had all those characters plus Anita start at 99. I never realized it was a glitch.
In my opinion this game beats Final Fantasy series on every aspects, even FF7.
They should remake this in 3d for PS4, would be a wetdream if it happends.
I actually recorded this from my physical copy + playstation with a TV tuner, so I have no idea how the sound emulation works with this game (on I assume epsxe).

i remember myself leveling low lvls with large groups of zombies around neclords, and chars always made 9 lvl max

Right before the final dungeon, you can get 80's-ish from the door glitch early on (that's how my Riou is 80-whatever), but you don't have many characters available at that point to do it with.
Gorudo is the most handsome character in the game...

I agree that two's the best, but 3 is and especially 5 are still pretty fantastic. 4 maybe not so much.
ok i dont know who gae me the thumbs down for stating that a few characters got to lvl 99 when i first got them. but whatever the bottom line is that there is a bug in the game that somewhere,somehow a few later chars like georg join at lvl 99.

It's probably possible. There are some other enemies that give more exp and with a fortune crystal. I know you can do this at 49 with a fortune crystal, so you could use 44 as your base, instead of 49. Your best bet might be to just have the hero in in the mid 80's or so and have him absorb all the exp from the fights by killing off all your party members.

i left my game for the weekend by accident and saved, loaded the game and each character had gone up 30 or so levels. It was near the end of the game though, after liberating greenland i believe.
Is Suikoden 1 worth 6 bucks from the PSN? Never played the series but I love turn based and this music is epic
he's totally right. i can't even get through ff7, it just gets really boring after a while, this games story is much more engaging
I agreed with you, as a kid, I couldn't finish a single RPG except Suikoden 2 because of it's storyline. After Suikoden 2, I learned to be more patient to finish an RPG game.
make sure to have the knights of the round summon, if not use cloud's omnislash with his ultima weapon

@Retribution235 i figured out that glitch by accident during my first play through back in the day. I was like wtf? I can just push the gate open?. It was very weird. But when i got to the other side i ran into a battle and got wiped out in like 1 round. and i said to myself oops i guess i'm not supposed to go there yet.then during my 2nd playthrough i got futch and humphrey and had them kill the bad guys. Its very strange because thats the only way to get jowy his level 4 spell.

UK, outside of japan this game is an unknown gem. there are only 1 or 2 suikoden videos that have over 100k views, most with a meager few thousand. all well known games have tonnes of videos with millions of views. google "suikoden 2 rare" or something and read what others have said as well. as i said, i wish everybody knew about this game and a 6th main installment came out...but i doubt that will happen due to lack of notoriety :/

why not? i always level up my characters too! People are always rushing to the end and they are like level 50.... lol.
Especially in like, Final Fantasy X when you do the triple ap weapons and kill sin in 3 hits. XD It makes it THAT much better. Only, you have to work really hard to get that done. I can say I did it and that Sin got his ass kicked by a bunch of girls. (Rikku, Lulu, and Yuna)

at what lvl do i get my main character to wear a rune on head slot? my main char got the obvius shield rune + water rune and im waiting for head slot for ressurection rune

No, maxes out at 99. I want to say I actually got someone to 99 twice and it showed they gained a level, but added no stats.

Hoi , L.C. Chan , Georg , Pesmerga , Mazus and General Jowy / Jowy after the final battle, will sometimes come at lvl 99. But if one of them does, all others will. I have played Suikoden like 20 times, but this only happened in the only gameplay where I loaded Suikoden 1 data. Maybe thats it?
no, i finished suikoden 2 twice with suikoden 1 data and it never happened to me
Yeah, the game is pretty easy, it was just interesting (to me) after a few playthroughs to get the characters all maxed out.
Fair enough. I'm kind of sad though. I'm such a fan of the Suikoden series (with a few glaring exceptions...) that I wish everyone enjoyed it. Maybe then Konami would make buckets of money and give us proper Suikoden games.

the unite attack, the rune system, the forging weapons system, 108 char, good storyline.
Even the the lore is pretty much appealing to hardcore JRPG gamers.
we can even improve the castle (HQ), this game was one of the best JRPG
back in the golden era of PS1.

Why is he getting seemingly infinite experience?
I had the character similar to our PC (but fat version) ding to 99 upon recruitment dunno why when my highest at time was ~50.
What if my players isnt lv 39 or 49?
They r all about lv 55+, is it possible to lvl ing to 99 too ?
It's been a while... but if I remember correctly, you get exp based on the level you are. Since it always takes 1000 exp to level - when you're at level 39, and you get (somewhere slightly more than) 60000 exp from this battle, you get put at level 99 (60000exp/1000 exp required to level = 60 total levels for the character). When you're 49 you get like 25k exp (50k with fortune rune) so you end up with 99 again. When you're 55+ you may get like 10k or less exp so you'll only go to level 65 due to the way Suikoden 2 handles exp scaling. These are probably not the exact exp values, but close.

Such a great RPG. it's such a shame the series just went the shit. What the fuck was so wrong with 2d animation that they had switch to 3D for Suik 3,4 etc? Suikoden II is proof that 2d animation can make better games with the same budget then 3D (i.e. every Suikoden after this)
I take it you're not a fan of JRPGs then. You probably have the same opinion of Earthbound. It's worth so much because, to fans of the genre, they're amazing games. But only a finite amount were made, so supply and demand takes effect. People want backups/replacements, and not many who have them are willing to part so easily. Konami could fix the inflated price with a re-release, but it seems they don't like money.
I would suggest Call of Duty, since you seem to have poor taste ;).

Lol i got to level 20 at the start of the game ahahahahahaha i didnt jump the cliff kept doing that for like an hour and a half ahahahaha every time i get a chance to fight highlanders i pray those options are there were you get to stay and fight XD . and by the way this game is the best Under rated RPG game EVAR!!!!!!!
