Mega Man 4 (NES) Playthrough

  • A playthrough of Capcom's 1992 action game for the NES, Mega Man 4.
The fourth entry in the iconic Mega Man series is yet another great run-and-gun platformer for the NES that meaningfully builds upon the mechanics established in the first three games while throwing in some razzle-dazzle to keep things spicy.
The chargeable Mega Buster and the helpful FlipTop character make their debuts here, as do the wire and balloon adapters and branching stage paths.
There's even a fun twist to the plot this time! Dr. Wily got squashed by a rock at the end of Mega Man 3 (hence that game's Japanese subtitle, "Wily no Saigo!?", lit. "Dr. Wily's End!?"), so Mega Man 4's story kicks off with the introduction of Dr. Cossack. You could see the twist coming from a mile away, but it was a neat touch anyway.
It plays just as well as the ones that came before it, and even though Mega Man 4 doesn't feel quite as original or as heartfelt as its older brothers, it is super polished and just as fun to play. I like it nearly as much as I did Mega Man 3 ( • Mega Man 3 (NES) Playt... ).
The boss enemies aren't quite as cool as before - Toad Man's menacing rain dance (seriously?) and the Dust Man's vaccuum-for-a-face were pretty lame - but most of them are pretty good. The revamped cast of regular enemies all have larger sprites and better detail, and the mini-bosses are far more impressive in their size and variety.
The graphics are bright and sharp, and the animated intro is, in my opinion, the best of all the NES Mega Man games. The soundtrack is also still thoroughly amazing. It's a lot darker and moodier than what came before, but it's thoroughly energetic, memorable, and just as well written as what we heard in the second and third games.
I'm not, however, a fan of the subscreen that has replaced the pop-up window from the earlier games. It's a minor quibble, but I dislike how it removes you from the game entirely just to switch weapons. (And why couldn't we just cycle through them with the select button?)
Even with its innovations, the core gameplay doesn’t feel quite as fresh or classic as it once did, but Mega Man 4 is very much worth checking out if you liked the earlier games. I got it for my birthday in 1992 and I played the snot out of it, and I still love it now.

This was a bit of a turning point for the series. MM4 introduced another couple of staples, Mega Man's ability to charge up his Mega Buster for an even stronger shot, and Eddie, another buddy for him and a transportation robot that carries and provides a random item for the player in several stages. Another favorite original entry of mine!

It also gave us some interesting Robot Masters with Dr. Cossack's designs thanks to Dr. Wily manipulating him by kidnapping Kalinka, even if 6 of the Robot Masters weren't made for combat purposes.

For sure, it was like the “second life” of the series in the latter days of the NES. Almost all of us had moved on to the SNES by then. I personally never knew anyone who owned Mega Man 4, 5 or 6 during that era. I only played them much later on. I really enjoy the intro as well.

Expecting a 4th entry to be "fresh," as well as lamenting that a 4th entry no longer is "fresh," is about as insightful as expecting stale bread to be "not soft." Dry, stale bread actually has uses, but holding it to the same expectation as non-stale bread is absurd

Years later, fighting against Dr Wily machine was SO tough because the hit box was too high up. I found out that I can charge up, pause to switch to Rush coil and then pause again to switch back to mega buster, the buster remained fully charged. That had helped defeat that tough boss fight and eventually beat the game. After playing this many times, I was so happy to actually see the ending.

Mega Man 4 is my favorite game out of the entire 6 NES Mega Man games. The new antagonist Dr. Cossack gave the game a Russian theme, the Robot Masters designs are sick (Especially Pharaoh Man, Skull Man and Drill Man), all the weapons are amazing. We have not one but TWO castles which most of the stages are well designed and creative too. (Met themed stage in Wily 1) and the soundtrack is highly under appreciated.
Mega Man 4 feels so passionate and not rushed out the door like MM2 and MM3, it has aged MUCH BETTER than the previous MM games. This game is timeless. 😁😁😁😁

Not a bad entry, and I like the addition of Eddie (Fliptop), the Mega Buster, and the Wire and Balloon adaptors. However, was the slowdown in energy charging necessary? They probably realized how useless Rush Marine was, hence why they retired it in the next game. Skull Man's theme is my favorite, and the ending theme where Mega Man heads back home is nothing short of tranquil and relaxing.

    • @SammyRenard
      @SammyRenard Рік тому +3

the charge shot was slower to charge but it also didn't reset when you were hit which made it a hell of a lot more convenient than in the later games where it charges faster but you also lose your charge if you're hit

I was firmly into Genesis land when this came out and it would be another few months until a Super NES would appear under the Christmas tree, so I totally skipped this when it was new, though was still really curious about it and would've been happy to play it. I didn't until around the N64 era when I met someone who had a huge collection of NES games and I could tell, even though the glory days of the NES were long over, it didn't have much to say that hadn't been covered by 2 and 3 and the major addition it made to the series, the charging of the mega buster, I felt was more of a nuisance than anything. Why not just always keep it charging, drowning out the sound and locking your thumb on B the entire game? Still, it's leagues better than the uninspired 5th and totally forgettable sixth and still features some interesting and creative level designs. It's easily my third favorite in the original run even if it can't match the heights of its predecessors, but I don't think the charging gun made the game any better.

Buster, when he charges at you make a jump to the opposite side of the room (a jump similar of Toad Man's), your timing has to be precise though, because you'll have to land just before Dive sets himself to fire, if done properly, Dive will fire his missile straight at you (just don´t move, only fire), once the 3rd missile is destroyed he'll charge at you again, repeat until destruction. It takes a bit of practice but in the end is just as easy as if you were using skull barrier...plus looks more crafty imho

People that say this is where the series started to decline are contrarian morons. It improves on the formula with the charge shot, and the graphics are actually better than other games. There wasn't much to improve on back then, and this is just an upgrade. If your expectations of a fourth entry in any series are for it to "feel fresh," you need to re-evaluate your expectations. A fourth entry should be gauged on how well the series has aged, what has been improved upon or reinvented, which may indeed feel fresh, but that shouldn't be an expectation, that's gravy.
