Mega Man 9 (Wii) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

- A playthrough of Capcom's 2008 action-platformer for the Nintendo Wii, Mega Man 9.
A full ten years after the release of Mega Man 8 on the PlayStation and Saturn, the blue bomber finally reappeared in a numbered sequel to the original mainline series. The big selling point for 9 was that the game was not a "modern" title, but rather a retro-throwback that closely mimicked the look, sound, and feel of Mega Man 2 on the NES.
It succeeds quite well on the presentation - it adheres closely enough to Mega Man 2 that it provides a surprisingly convincing NES-like experience, and the controls feel exactly the way they used to. The game itself also follows the series template closely: you fight eight robot masters, take their weapons, and go whoop some Wily butt.
If I'm being honest, though, the game really doesn't impress me very much. The series went out on the NES with a whimper, mainly thanks to Capcom's incessant recycling of the same elements over and over. It had gotten thoroughly stale. Unfortunately, Mega Man 9 brought that feeling back with a vengeance. It does a couple of small new things, but none of them are meaningful game-changers. Instead, we got some excruciatingly lame boss robots, ugly and overtly-tacky cinematics, and some irritating and unnecessary stage gimmicks. Even the 8-bit "style" soundtrack - sure it sounds like NES music, but none of it is particularly memorable or as well composed as the tunes in the old games. Not in my opinion, at least.
And is it just me, or was it entirely too easy for a Mega Man title?
Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad game at all. It strives for Mega Man 2, and it feels like an (albeit uninspired) clone of that game. For me, though - I really wanted to like it. I was excited for it when it came out. And then all of that just kinda crumbled to meh. I always thought 3 was the high mark of the series, and this game in no way makes me reconsider that opinion.

I remember playing this on my dads PS3 and just sitting and listening to the loading screen music. Memories.
I loved the concrete man level music so much and still do.
gotta admire how well dr wily framed dr light this time around
Absolute madman
Imagine the framing wasn’t happening
yes YES! I WAS SO CLOSE TO FRAMING LIGHT! ...but.... MEGAMAN STOPPED ME AGAIN!
Same thing happened when Bowser Jr, disguise as Shadow Mario, made all the ruins of the entire Isle Delfino and then he blame and frame Mario for this.
It's amazing how faithful they were to the limits of the NES hardware (except for the scrolling update anomaly on the right hand side of the screen, and maybe some other things). It even has limited sound channels, so when selecting in the menu, you lose some of the music. Brilliant!
depente...
Bruh I want you to start with splash women
01:23 - Looks like Chun-Li was forced by Interpol to be a news broadcaster after Street Fighter...
I think she's undercover
To be fair, the "same ol' same ol'" feeling of Mega Man is sort of the point. You go in knowing exactly what you'll get. I'm fine with that, if I'm Jonesing to play a Mega Man game, then I know the exact formula it'll follow. It's comfortable and familiar, like a pair of old shoes. I enjoyed it, as well as 10. I've played through all the main MM games and the X games up to the PS2 releases (Oi VEY no thanks there). To me, it doesn't really get old. It's still fun after all these years to find the whole rock/paper/scissors way of fighting the bosses and chunking your way through the levels. Is it top notch? No. Is it fun? Hell yeah.
It got old for me back in the day. I loved 4 and remember thinking 5 was alright, but it was too similar. I was even more that way when 6 came out. We rented it, and I played it for about an hour and then didn't touch it again for the weekend. It was just much of the same again and I didn't care at that point. It surprised me when thet feeling came right back the first time I played this one. It's fun, but it can't hold a candle to the first games for me. I did feel like I got my money out of it though. It wasn't $50 like the NES ones were:)
I getcha. Sometimes the nostalgia goggles are hard to put down. I just happen to be a huge Mega Man fan (the first game was the very first game I ever rented, actually), so it pushed all the right buttons for me.
This game explained badly:
robot kid tracks down and shoots his younger siblings because they went crazy after being lied to by a mad scientist who framed their dad.
Hi nooblox
How did this explain badly, it's literally the same plot for the past games kid
Massive respect for creating a critical opinion of Mega Man 9 without jumping in what the bandwagon of Mega Man 9 haters think. Your opinion is a lot more valid here.
I love Mega Man 9, but all these recent haters make no sense. Your opinion makes more sense here.
What do you mean recent haters? Mega Man 9 from what I can tell is universally praised, rightfully so too
@@Jackattack359 They consider MM9 "bullshit difficult", and unfair because you "have no slide and charge shot". They would also hate Jewel Man's stage for the spikes and praise Mega Man 4-6 like it's the holy grail of Mega Man games despite those first two games being spike HELL.
@@solarflare9078 well then they’re delusional
Played this a lot when it came out. For what it is, it's really good. The soundtrack is really rocking and that's essential for any Mega Man game.
The team behind the music outdid themselves. Talk about modern classic 8 bit tunes.
This game looks amazing! Truly a successor of Mega Man 2. And the graphics, levels, and music are brilliant! This is how you make a modern NES-styled game.
Me in 2009: That graphics are outdated.
Me in 2020: Hey, that fits for the Late 2000s!
Hurray for the retro gaming movement.
This was my personal Game of the Year for 2008. A fantastic return to form for Mega Man. One of the best in the series.
I can listen to Jewel's Man theme song all day. That is how catchy the music is XD
Jewel Man himself looks FABULOUS.
Yes my opinion l last
More Like Bejeweled Man
I just realized this, but whichever Robot Master you finish off last will not be in the Wily talking to the Robot Masters cutscene, as the cutscene is from their 1st person perspective. Great little Easter egg and such great attention to detail.
I got to Dr. Wily without any E-tanks or W-Tanks. I ended up abandoning the progress, buying a bunch of E-tanks and an M-tank and then replaying through the castle.
In Mega Man 10 I reached Wily’s castle, went shopping for E-tanks, an M-tank and a bunch of beat calls.
Breezed right through!!!
Nice play through, thank for you keeping all the cutscenes in - a lot of people remove them.
Thank you for a such wonderful walkthrough of this fabulous game.
If it weren't for MM3, this would be my favorite Megaman game.
Why MegaMan 3 though?
@@edwardgaines6561 Purely nostalgia. On merit alone MM9 is the best Mega Man game.
@@Jordanime what about megaman 2 or megaman 5 on gameboy?
@@mariowario5945 I'll be honest, I think 2's a little overrated. Once you got Metal Man's power it was too easy.
@Jordanime Did you find Megaman 3 harder than Megaman 1 and 9? I've played the American version of Megaman 3 and it's hard. Don't know the JP version.
God, late with the Black Hole Bomb on the Fire Dragon on every single pass...
If you are going to farm Tellies, use the Jewel Satellite rather than get hit a billion times.
That spike jump in the second palace stage... WOW. I've never made that without Rush Jet.
2:32 I'm so glad that roll is returning her bright red original dress.
My favorite robot loli.
You can return her to her Megaman 8 clothes for 200 bolts (that is if you really REALLY want to)
I prefer 8’s and 11’s.
Roll in her MM8 attire is the only time she's ever looked good
I was so excited for Mega Man's first appearance in a decade with this title, and they were pretty successful in getting the 8-bit feel.
I know many people loved it, but personally I couldn't get on-board. I thought it felt like a tacky and exploitative cash-in, and that made me sad. :(
+Pax Humana Well, that seems a bit uncalled for, especially considering it's my channel. I'm entitled to my opinion just as much as you are. And aren't personal attacks, much like posing subjective opinion as fact, usually the sign of someone trying to cover up a weak or untenable argument? Just sayin'.
How do you feel about 11?
NintendoComplete The Robot Master stages aren't that bad (except for Concrete Man) but the Wily stage to me are just bad too challenging and too lengthy, but I still think that the Robot Masters hold up and the while still taking from Mega Man 2 is still really good to me
NintendoComplete I liked how it returned to its own original field p, but I will miss the changes they did in the previous games.
Micheal Rogers Isn’t that Mega Man X1
With all respect to old generation gamers MegaMan 7 and 8 32bit graphic design is better than the 8bit off MegaMan 9 and 10
MegaMan 8 looks quite pretty but 7 is meh. X1,2,4 is where it's at for a series improvement
@@Phantron Nah I love 7's art style but 8 is top
I mean I prefer 8 bit and I'm not even close to "old-school" But 7-8 look great as well
It’s not really supposed to look better dude
Dr. Wily wants to rule the world because he wants power and respect after his projects were scorned and ridiculed at a science fair. Dr. Wily will always be alone because he lusts for attention after losing to Dr. Light and that is a form of pride. It is said that pride comes before the fall. In other words, arrogance equals weakness. Because of this, he'll never win.
Good point

Arrogance doesn't equate to weakness. You're conflating the two.
@@patricksutton782 It's my own way of saying pride comes before a fall. Because Wily will never understand the power of friendship and understanding, he will always lose.

This is my first time in watching a Nintendo Wii game. To my pleasant surprise, it looks and sounds just like the original Nintendo with only a few differences. I'm pleased with this.
This one gane, as well as MM10, are specifically designed to look retro, despite the many technological advances since... though if that's what you're referring to, then you're spot on
Moreover, both 9 and 10 are throwbacks to MM2 than the other NES games with the old sound effects and lack of slide and megabuster shot.
The more advanced console the Wii makes 8 bit graphics more slick and smoother then the NES ever would be.
@Marco Zepeda I suppose you're a teen or an older man who has no uploaded videos, no playlists, no subscribed channels, and no subscribers to your own channel since 2014. I don't know if I should pity you or laugh at you. Which do you prefer?
@Marco Zepeda I have productive things to do. Playing games is what a child does. I choose to watch from a distance. I put these things behind me and choose to move on. Time is ticking. Can't waste any more time.
FANTASTIC!! Your skills exceed even mine! This playthrough just showed me how old I really am now. I guess that makes me an old fogy now. In a way it felt like I was right there with you, playing along until the difficulty got down-right ridiculous. To me, this makes the previous games seem almost easy. Wow! I had no idea what I would've been up against with my rusty old skills and slower, aged reflexes! This game looks incredibly frustrating and that's coming from a guy who used to play through the first game on one life and even beat Mega Man 3 once on one life and learned in-game tricks to add more challenge for replay value. I used to be a big Mega Man collector but, now my interests are more toward sprite-making and fan-made games. Congratulations! Thank you again. It was like watching a movie. I enjoyed this. At one point when I had the video paused, I started to pick up my controller to unpause it! Hahaha. Great video!
absolute cringe
The thing is NintendoComplete thinks this game is easy compared to other Mega Man games, unlike what many say, so it ain't that much for him.

1:13:20 -- "This is where you first went wrong." Then he shows Wily every defeat from the numbered NES/SNES series, plus Megaman & Bass (with the most popular Master weapons used).
I can look at most of them and tell what brought him to his knees.
1 -- Elec/Thunder Beam (E)
2 -- Bubble Lead (B)
3 -- Top Spin (TO)
4 -- Pharaoh Shot (PH)
5 -- Mega Buster (or Beat)
6 -- Mega Buster?
7 -- Wild Coil
(I haven't played 8 past that d@&% Frost Man stage, and haven't played even the GBA Megaman & Bass.)
The big dragon at 24:36 is just about impossible with the mega buster. The issue is you have to concentrate so much on dodging that it’s hard to squeeze in an attack.
Dude, you play it very well. Congratulations.
1985dossantos Thanks! :)
Too easy? Many people (myself included) could argue this is the hardest in the series.
Tartuffe the Spry Wonder Dog You sure that it isn't rust collected on the reflexes over the years? I know I feel that. I can still play well, but I clearly remember feats I could pull off with one hand tied behind my back. When I was 10, I remember flying through Ninia Gaiden without breaking a sweat - tons of hours of practice and kid ninja reflexes I think made me remember them easier than they are. I struggle with Ninja Gaiden now - I remember it all, but it's so much more brutal to me now that I'm 25 years older lmao. Know what I mean?
NintendoComplete
I replayed the earlier games recently before playing Mega Man 9, I think it’s just as hard as it predecessors. Maybe slightly easier but still pretty challenging.
The charge shot Is sorely lacking.
I have to agree that it's harder compared to the like the six NES games. I could play through those like a hot knife through butter compared to Mega Man 9.
Mega Man and Bass: Am I a joke to you?
Am I the only one who thinks the L in Dr Light looks like the Lexus logo?
Lmao, he's just fronting. He's just a Corolla with a few dents and rust spots.
I agree with Nate. Hopefully Capcom didn't have any legal issues with Toyota.
The hardest mega man game I’ve ever played
I really love this game. I consider its really nice that all robot masters weapons are useful, specially during the Doctor Willy's castle's phases.
1:15:42 Love Wily's "animation" here
That final boss was so tough! I had to use 5 energy containers.
Yep i havent played this game in years and cant get past the last boss with enough energies to survive lol
The simplicity of this game's formula (at least when playing as Mega Man) makes it the true sequel to Mega Man 2. While Mega Man 11 shows the series potential moving forward.
Tornado Man music is awesome !!
Wow the BGM... is still as epic as ever...
It's really good
I swear Jewel Man reminds me of Bright Man from MM4 the way he jumps.
He reminds me of Bright Man period
In megaman 9 its a lot of reference
Like:
-Get weapon theme (megaman 2)
-Wily castle map theme (megaman 2 too)
-Splashman stage (Bubble area looks like waveman stage in megaman 5)
-Megaman can't slide or charge (like megaman 1,and 2)
-and auto say the robot master is scrap
well, looks like Magma man is fire man,Splash man is bubble man,Tornado man is air man,Plug man is spark man,Concrete man is Guts man,Galaxy man is Astro man, and Jewel man is crystal man.
(Hornet man idk looks like he is new:v)
-and twin devil looks like green devil from megaman and bass & megaman 8
The scrap is took from past robot master
And dr.light rebuild them
If this wrong
You can corrected it
The robot splash is woman 😅
Hey is anyone having trouble with the wii control when im playing this beacause when i try movong left or right i have to press up and down on the d pad to move does any one know how to fix that?
I just hate that they took the slide and Mega Buster out.
This game is awesome. I always felt like, with the inclusion of Protoman as a playable character, it was 2 different games in 1, one featuring Megaman, and the other Protoman, it feels like a double package.
Mega Man 9 is where Mega Man fights eight new Robot Masters, who were created by Doctor Light and went beserk for some reason (Concrete Man, Hornet Man, Splash Woman, Tornado Man, Jewel Man, Galaxy Man, Magma Man, and Plug Man, numbered 65-72 because there are 64 others before them in the first eight games). It’s where the graphics were copied from the first two games for nostalgia, as you don’t do charge your weapon or slide, but you can still use Rush and buy stuff. It also has the DLC, where you get to play as Proto Man, who is physically weaker than Mega Man, and fight Fake Man. Doctor Wily said that Doctor Light is responsible for the eight Robot Masters’ attacks, but actually, he framed Light, and stole and mind-controlled the RMs to make Light look bad. After Mega Man defeated all eight of these RMs, he freed them from Wily’s mind-control, and then Doctor Light took care of the expiration dates that the RMs had. They are doing jobs and allowed to live, like Mega Man and Roll (I can say the same to the RMs from all eleven main Mega Man games, as I believe these RMs are still alive). It's interesting that the game introduced, Splash Woman, who is the first female warrior Robot Master. It’s amazing that this game came out 11 years after the eighth game in 1997. I like the part where Mega Man reminds Wily all of Wily's evil actions in the first eight games and that spin-off called Mega Man and Bass in 1998, the latter served as a filler for the ninth game since Rush did not record Wily's evil actions in MM9 yet. Boy, I want a remake that has the same graphics and bonus stuff as Mega Man 11. And/or, a 3-D action-adventure remake/version that does all this, and the 3-D part would be like Kirby and the Forgotten Land in 2022 rather than Mega Man X7 (that game was weird).🙏 Concrete Man is my favorite in MM9.
I wasn't big on MM9 either and I've yet to play 10. I'm not excited for the upcoming 11 either. I'm glad the blue bomber is back. Now release Mega Man Legends 3!
We also need Mega Man X9.
So somehow you were not excited about 11 but were happy that Mega Man was back?

There are no difficulty levels in 9, just 10.
There's only one difficulty unless one downloaded Hero and Superhero Modes.
@@WarhawkFAQs and Proto Man
With all due respect, I think you're missing the point about how it's the same as the old ones. More accurately; the NES. And yet, you didn't complain about 7 & 8 being the same game because it was an new gen. It doesn't matter what kind of bit it is as long as the game is good. Saying the game isn't that good because it's like the 8-bit NES ones is kinda an lame excuse. That's like saying Sonic Mania shouldn't been an 16bit game compared to the Genesis part because it was 23 years ago & plays the exact same. Now whether if it's for nostalgia or not & whether or not it plays the same, the game can still do so well as long as they know how to crafted the game so well. I understand where your coming from & I'm fine with that. But I'm sorry. That's an lame excuse if you ask me.
You’re absolutely correct, this game’s graphics are not supposed to be any more advanced than 7 or 8 but in my opinion they’re still great thanks to the amount of colors used

MM9 in terms of difficulty reminds me of MM2, meaning it's rather easy; MM1 is still by far the hardest one I'd say (and it was the first one I played). The only thing I disagree with you on is the music. This one probably has the most memorable tunes to me besides MM2. Other than that, pretty much spot on how I feel about this game. Not bad, but could've been better.
Rockman and Forte, sometimes called Mega Man 8.5, was pretty tough in itself. The first game had the exploitable pause trick you could do with the Elec Beam, making the game far easier than what it should've been. Even the mighty Yellow Devil was susceptible to the trick.
Mm3 very hard
talking by experience, Megaman and Bass is the hardest game of them all, and here's why:
- Level design punishes you the way it can
- Enemies almost always hit you first
- Lack of E tanks, which means Eddie is your only way to refill your health with megaman during boss battles (and they're even worse here than in the other games), also Bass can't heal his health by any means during boss battles, which makes most boss battles tricky.
- When you die your weapon ammo doesn't get refilled like in past megaman games, so if you waste all your ammo on a boss and still die, when you respawn you will have to try and kill him with your Weak buster, and good luck with that.
- King's stages is probably harder than Wily's stages from the first game
- King stage 2 has FOUR boss battles on the same level, and one of them requires a bit of luck to be beaten with megaman.
AND if you're playing on the GBA version it's even worse thanks to the small screen of the GBA
“requires luck” you mean the king jet?

While Mega Man 9 is pretty cool, I feel it sucks some of the staples of the series didn't pop up like Mega Man having a charged Mega Buster shot or sliding. It did have some neat ideas and was cool to show the franchise return, even in this kind of classic approach for the old school fans. It and 10 did help a lot with Mega Man coming back, but I feel 11 is more consistent with moving the series forward.

Concrete Man! ❤❤
Best robot master in the classic series. No questions asked. P
Mega Man 9 is a really difficult game for me to rank. It's a giant love letter to old school traditional fans, but it's not very innovative for 2008. I love the weapons and music, but I don't like many of the stages due to the stupid amount of instant deaths and the final Wily dinosaur battle was too ridiculous. Casual players will probably hate this game, while old hardcore fans love it. The problem is Capcom used all their 2D ideas in the X series and never "reincorporated" them back to the classic series. You can't wall climb or ride mech vehicles in MM9 or MM10. Why not? You can't even exit a stage at will! Why does Capcom treat the classic games with such minimalism?
Why would they add wall jumping to the classic series? There’s supposed to be a difference between classic and x for fucks sake
@@amso7169To make the games better obviously. If you’re going to keep making 2D games add more moves and expand the gameplay. The two series are almost identical so it wouldn’t matter.
