This one is pretty rousing. I forgot to mention in the video that the term "Berber" is derived from what the ancient Greeks called them. It's related to the term "barbarian," which is the word that the Greeks used for anyone who didn't speak Greek. The Greeks thought foreign languages sounded like people saying "bar bar" or similar. The people in question here actually call themselves Amazigh.
High Barbary - Lyrics
1. There were two lofty ship, from Old England they did sail.
Blow high! Blow low! And so sailed we!
One was the Prince of Luther and the other the Prince of Wales.
Sailing down along the coast of High Barbaree!
2. Aloft there, aloft there, the bosun he did say.
Look ahead and a-stern, to the weather and a-lee.
3. Oh there's naught to the stern, sir, and nought to the lee.
There is a ship to wind'ard and she's sailing fast and free.
4. Oh hail her, oh hail her, our captain he did say.
Are you a manofwar or a privateer today?
5. Oh no I'm not a man-of-war nor privateer, said he.
But I'm a salt sea pirate and I'm looking for my fee.
6. For broadside, for broadside a long time we lay.
Till at last the Prince of Luther shot the pirate's mast away.
7. O quarter, o quarter the pirates they did cry.
But the quarter that we gave them was to sink to the bottom and die. - Розваги
Man I grew up hearing your voice in the Assassin's creed
You've got such a great voice
Your songs live rent free in my head
Thanks. I like rent-free.
I FOUND YOU.
Holy shite finally! I've been looking for the lads behind the iconic sea shanties of AC4 for ages now!
I'm glad you found us! Welcome aboard!
That's the best short description of a privateer I've ever seen.
Sums it up.
My sis' name is Barbara, and seeing the name of the song invokes
in me the "chaotic sibling" emptions.
The word Barbary and Barbara have the same origin. In a way this is about your chaotic sister. In a way.
I would love to hear you do "General Taylor" / "Storm Along John", and get your breakdown on them, especially since they are so similar.
ua-cam.com/video/bo9-du07kuM/v-deo.html Is this the one you're looking for?
So there's a whole family of Stormalong / General Taylor songs. I did one, as Dennis mentioned, and I will do others. It's a great epic story (one with many chapters) and I really like that there are many ways to tell it.
Your Voice reached Austria. Great voice, great shanties. Thank you, Sir! Hear ya in Assassin's Creed
Thanks Licht. Hello to Austria.
🇦🇹
Thanks for this excellent addition Sean! Love your work, I can't wait for you to be able to travel and share the magic you bring to shanties once COVID is all over!
Oh, man. That's going to be a fun tour.
18k views, not a single dislike. As this deserves.
Hello everyone ! I wish you a nice week . Blow high , blow low and so sailed we !
Thanks Nico. I wish you a nice week, too.
The entire series of conflicts between the West and the Barbary Pirates/Slavers is very interesting history.
You make my days so much better, thank you so much man !
You're welcome.
I never knew this was based on a real story! Thanks!
Well, I'm sure events like the ones described here did happen often. I meant "real story" as in a complete narrative, not just bits of text.
I'm here!! Thanks for uploading its a Pleasure!! I love your videos like always!!
Welcome here! I'm glad you came.
That was beautiful!
One of my favorites! I was singing along and will be singing all week for sure. Many thanks!
That's the best news. Keep it up.
Thanks so much for bringing this to us! This joy is just what is needed during this lockdown :)
Funny, eh? This is really the only kind of gig I can do these days, and it's the only kind of gig anyone can attend. So at least there's that.
That was wonderful. Really pleasing harmonies to listen to!
Thanks Brass. I'm glad you like the harmonies.
It's too cool to be true. Thank you for your work, always needed a youtube-channel like yours!
You are welcome!
I remember when I first heard this song, immediately love it. Good video Sean
Thanks Ed. I'm glad to help bring back a memory.
Thanks a lot Cap'n! Amazing like always.
You're welcome!
another great job keep up the good work
Thanks Jarryth. I'm glad you like it.
Sang along all day today, and expect to sing it more this week! Thank you very much :)
Great. I love hearing about people actually singing.
Good morning mr Dagher, love this one, I see you expanded the instruments in the wall
Thanks Pierce. I try to rotate the instruments around for variety.
@@SeanDagher I now see a on the wall banjo, the best instrument in the world.
Looks like a Deering Goodtime banjo.
What amazing voice. Give me goosebumps.
I heard this song in recreation by Asonance and been looking for original version and yours is the best!
It's unbelivable how rich, complex and yet so incredibly enjoyable your harmonies sound. I am always curious about how you write all the voices and make them sound so great. Anyways, every shanty you post is a real treat for our ears, ad this one in particular was phenomenal. Thank you for your music!
Thanks. I usually write out the voices in advance but then adjust them as I'm singing the harmonies. It's almost always the same format: One lead voice (recorded during the filming), two or three other voices singing the responses in unison, 3 other parts (The A Choir) singing the responses in harmony (each part double or tripled), then a 3-part choir (The B Choir) of more textured harmonic accompaniment (each part doubled or tripled.) Sometimes the A Choir gets in on the harmonic accompaniment later in the song. I would arrange them slightly differently for an actual performance, mind you. The accompaniment would start sooner, or maybe sometimes even before the lead. There would be accompaniment interludes in-between verses sometimes. The texture would ebb and flow more, rather than just starting solo and building to the end. Sometimes I go out of my way to make the A and B choirs sing different chords at the same time, all modern, like. Anyway, that's what I do.
@@SeanDagher Thank you so much for your kind detailed answer. It must be tricky to handle all those voices, but you really make it seem easy and straightforward, and that tells a lot about your musical mastery, whether it is harmony or counterpoint. Again, thank you.
I am a fan of your work on the assassin's creed soundtrack, so glad I stumbled on your channel! Thank you for this series!
Well, I'm glad you stumbled on the channel too. Welcome!
Aaaaand my week suddenly took a turn for the better. Thanks as always Sean
That's really nice to hear. I hope you have a good week.
@@SeanDagher Thanks. you too!
Thanks for sharing this shanty! Is one of my favourites so far. It did cheer me up today
Nice to hear that, Nin. I'm glad you like it. Yes, "cheer" is a good word for this songs. Even the part where they die.
@@SeanDagher I guess the tune doesn´t always match the lyrics haha
Just when I think nothing could beat "Rio Grande" here comes a new challenger.
Excellent stuff as always Sean
Well, that's his praise. I'm glad you like it.
So hyped! This one is my favorite !
Well, I'm glad I finally got to it, then.
Playing this on loop
Cool.
This has to be my favorite one so far!
Thanks Mike. I'm glad you like it.
Honesty Sean Thank you for what you do. Your voice soothes my 5 and 3 year old boys. Proud to be raising little buccaneers!
Thanks Bronco. I love hearing about kids getting into it.
Only Sean Dagher can make a dutchman sing a old british navy song.
That's my specialty. Michiel Schrey is one of the main singers in our La Nef - Sea Songs & Shanties project!
Thanks so much for posting this! I can remember hearing my mother sing a version of this song when I was small. She probably learned it from a Burl Ives album. For those who don't know, Burl Ives was a singer and actor popular in the 1940s, '50s and '60s who popularized folksongs from around the world.
You are welcome. I think a lot of people learned this from Burl.
I've been doing shanties on my channel recently, not knowing that my inspiration had his own channel! I love your work mate. You have inspired my creativity in so many ways. Can't wait to watch your videos :)
Thanks Suga. I'm glad you like it and I'm glad you are doing songs too!
oooohhhh pretty epic this one! Thanks Sean, great as usual!!
Thanks Andrea. Yeah, I think they're getting more and more epic as I add more voices. I can't help it.
@@SeanDagher well I definitely don't mind, that's for sure, feel free to add!! I've actually just spent a lovely evening with my best friend (it was her birthday) and she asked for karaoke at the end of the night! A few shanties of yours and everyone was singing along ahah
@@andreaguglielmo7939 You divil! Shanties are work songs, after all.
@@SeanDagher oh damn, you're right! Very well, next time we will be doing less frivolous activities while singing randy dandy oh. Is....uhm...tending to the garden enough of a working activity? The alternative is cleaning the house I guess, alas our jobs wouldn't benefit from singing while working I'm afraid ahah
Wooow, amazing one! I love it! :D
Thanks. Are you mooooved?
@@SeanDagher I am, thank you very moooch!
Ahh, awesome. Thanks for this. Might take a stab at it myself. A lot more simplified of course.
You should go for it!
@@SeanDagher Recorded it last night and uploaded it today. Not half as clean as yours of course, but, I'm learning the shanty ways :) Thanks again.
If you haven’t already, I think you should do Whisky Johnny O’
Good suggestion. I'll put it on the list.
Love this song
Me too.
I love it 😀
Thanks!
This ones a banger!!
Bang.
Loving your work as always, but also loving the fact youre more relaxed in front of the camera XD
It does seem more relaxed when I just go with it.
@@SeanDagher indeed, keep up the good work :)
My son loves this one. We'll be singing it for weeks.
Good! It's pretty rousing.
If I could whistle I would whistle this song everywhere! Thank you for the shanty this week!
But you can sing it everywhere, no?
@@SeanDagher I would, but I feel some aren't as fond as shanties as the rest of us!
@@Spineless-Lobster They know where they can go.
That is one hell of a mustache. Wish work would let me grow one like it
Just become a musician. Easy! The hours are great, you can have the facial hair you want.
@@SeanDagher I'm actually working on it believe it or not. I've got a whole 10 song ep written but I need to get the songs composed. Slowly but surely.
Almost to 10K!
Crazy, eh?
I've never heard the pirate version of this song, I've only heard the one where he says he's a man 'o war. I like this one better, great video as usual.
Thanks Brian. One of the things I love about these songs is that there are so many different versions and there is no one Definitive version.
I love your shanties
Thank you!
I hadn't heard this one before and it took me a couple verses to get it, but it was a highly enjoyable singalong as always :D
I'm glad you like it and managed so sing along!
Sean you should do the wellermen! That song is super popular all over the internet right now and it could get you more exposure!
It could. There are so many great versions of The Wellerman; Nathan Evans' is fantastic. The Longest Johns (whose version I think inspired Nathan) also do a great one. For now I'll stick to other songs but I will eventually get around to it.
@@SeanDagher very true!
Me and my Son loved singing the refrains back to you Sean, what a lovely tune, something to get the Randy Dandy Oh tune out of our heads! Loved the wide shot also on Twitter giving us an idea of where you set up! Take care Sean and thanks as always!!
Nice to hear about singing with the kid; that's the best. I'm eventually going to do a behind the scenes thing, with instrument demos etc.
@@SeanDagher That would be great to see Sean! My 11 y/o is just as eager to see you on tour as I am :)
@@nippey2 Where are you guys located?
UK, Manchester
Always looking forwards to the shanty of the week, hadn't heard this version of High Barbary before, usually a lot more condensed and vague lyrics than this, but enjoyed it all the same :)
Thanks Pie Guy. I'm glad you like the series. Isn't it great that there are so many different versions of each song? It gives us all so many more songs to enjoy.
Please don’t stop uploading shanties I love them
I won't stop any time soon.
Lovely
Thanks.
These salty tars have amazing harmony!
They're a rowdy bunch, but if I give them enough to drink they can sometimes sing ok.
I had no idea you had a UA-cam channel. Been a fan of yours for a long time
Welcome to the channel! I'm glad you made it.
@@SeanDagher All the shanties you sing has brought so much joy into my life. Thanks for singing them!
Always good shanties
Thank you Luciano.
I've never heard this shanty bedore, but now it's one of my favorite. (Poor pirates😭)
Indeed, poor dudes. Just trying to make a buck.
Refrain should be in a tone of some Tun Tavern boys a-comin to the shores of Tripoli. :)
That would be epic.
I'm from the cost of barbaree, from an island that was the head quarter of the famous pirate Dargut, friend and chief lieutenant of barbarossa.
Wehey 😆
Djerba?
@@SeanDagher yess ❤❤❤
Hi Sean, I love the shanties. Have you thought of publishing a book of all the shanties you know. This would be perfect for a long haul road trip for the family to sing along! I know my family would love it and I would love to have the lyrics to all these great shanties materialised.
Yes, there's a book in the works. Don't tell anyone, though.
I agree this is an easy one too let out
Yeah, to belt out loud!
0 dislikes, don’t know if I’ve ever seen that on a video also your beard is amazing!!!
I'm pretty surprised myself. Both at the 0 dislikes and the beard.
@@SeanDagher got a name for your beard? Maybe the beastly stag or venomous pufferfish
A great new video! Can you please do Where Am I to Go M’Johnnies?
It's on the list! Coming up any week now.
As much as I would love to hear you sing bones in the ocean. You obviously know more about shanties than I do and you introduce us to wider horizons
Well, who knows... who knows if and when... who knows?
But the real thing now ,Mr Dagher is ... What is the secret of your beautiful pirate mustache D: ?!
Guinness and whiskey
Amazing song, Also new sub here!
Welcome aboard!
This is quite good. I would love to hear Santianna
I'll take "quite good." I'll get to Santianna. It's on the list!
@@SeanDagher My poor coworkers are very confused by all the nautical terms in the shanties I sing at work. They don't really mind, but they are confused.
Heather Alexander did a great version of this🥰
Could have been from the days of Jefferson's frigates made for the campaign against the Barbary Pirates
Sounds likely.
I know it might be a stupid question, sorry for that. But with English not being my native language: is the phrase "Blow high! Blow low!" just something describing the wind or is it a sailing term, like a command or something? I just can't figure it out but I love that Shanty a lot! Great to have found your channel! ❤
0 dislikes, nice 👍
I find it surprising.
I love this one. And I'm curious if you've heard The Storm Weather Shanty Choir's version of this song?
I love it. Really interesting arrangement and harmonization.
Does anyone know of a version of this song on Spotify that’s similar to how Seàn sings it?
I put my versions on Bamdcamp. which treats musicians much more fairly than Spotify. seandagher.bandcamp.com
Do you think you'll be able to do here's a health to the company? That would be sweet.
I'll do it in the eventual series of tavern songs. Eventually.
Fantastic. Can't wait😃
Sean i love this rendition!!! I've never been a fan of this song because I feel artists take it too far and too polka-ish or too piratey (if that makes sense). This is just absolutely wonderful :)
Thanks Nick. That's a danger in a lot of these songs. I try to aim right down the middle: just enough polka, just enough pirate. I think part of making it work is figuring out which notes to leave out and which notes to change and which notes to leave untouched. And that is usually different for each verse.
@@SeanDagher agreed, no matter how many variations I listen to, I always default back to your AC Black Flag songs. You do a tremendously amazing job Sean :)
I just found your series and it's fantastic! Are there any lyric/music books you recommend for shanties? I'm a folk musician and choir singer and would love to sing these with musical friends. They remind me of barbershop tags, in that you could teach the harmony parts of the chorus to a group fairly quickly
Thanks Daniel. I'm glad you like the tunes. There are lots of shanty song collections out there but not many with real choral arrangements. Seems like you could make them up pretty easily yourself.
ah yes the first op song come rise again
I'm not sure I completely understand.
@@SeanDagher sorry my english skill was bad
When you get the chance, if able, do Don't Forget Your Old Shipmate.
Good suggestion! (Have we had this exchange before?)
@@SeanDagher I don't believe we have.
Where do you find the songs you sing?
The high seas.
Love it, just wondering what kind of commission a mustache like that gets you?
I once got offered a sponsorship by a company that makes moustache-control products. I couldn't keep it because my moustache broke their products.
@@SeanDagher very powerful, very beautiful (in my best David Attenborough voice)
Am I allowed to put suggestions down here
Yes you are.
During the group parts, is this a group of people singing or are you copying your voice onto multiple voice tracks? Sounds fantastic either way. I ask because as a very novice shantyman looking to join a crew it would be so cool if you could do some form of virtual concert like I've seen some artists do and other passionate folks can participate in learning and singing these great songs with you.
It's all me singing several different voices on top of each other. All in all I usually sing about 22 voices on these songs.
I'd love to do a virtual concert but I'd have to figure out how to do it.
So are you a pirate? Or a Man O' war at sea!? ( I have all these shantys memorized like the back of my hand)
Awesome. Ready for singing at any given moment. Good plan!
Ready to spread the word!
will the shanty of the week ever end?
I hope not.
Hello Sean, when is the first original shanty? Or have I missed it?
I'm not sure completely understand. In this series I am singing exclusively anonymous / traditional / public domain songs. I rework and rearrange the songs but they will never be my original compositions. If I make enough mistakes then the melodies might be considered new!
@@SeanDagher I mean one you compose from scratch lyrics and all. It doesn't have to be something super fancy. Just something to have fun with. Thank you for the reply. Have a great day!
@@Mr_Zx Hi Zx. I have no plans to write any original shanties for the time being. There is so much great material out there that I have my hands full arranging. Thanks for your support and encouragement!
Imagine if these had instrumentals.. would be soo much more awesome!
Hmm. I suppose. On the La Nef album, Sea Songs & Shanties, there are instruments accompanying and some solos. I like the challenge of doing these without instruments but I think I would enjoy doing them with as well.
@@SeanDagher I love that album!! I listen to it frequently
Kinda weird that it was in black flag considering it’s 100 years off.
