I remember reading a book as a teen 6 decades ago of a ship stuck in the doldrums and they launched their "chariot" long boat to "Row The Old Chariot Along" and in the ship, "We all hang on behind" until they found some wind! Seems to make more sense than a road wagon for a sailor. I don't remember if it was "chariot" or "Chariot".

That's where "roll the old chariot" comes from (images.google.com - search for Balclutha pumps). #2 They did not tap the barrel where Nelson was stored, but it was not unusual for a sailor to slip a piece of straw between the planks of a barrel to get a drop or two from the rum stores, hence "a drop of Nelson's blood." Keep those shanties alive!

Well after the body was transported those vessels were continued in use I'm sure and there was probably good local knowledge as to which one held the body and was now holding something else better to drink but still I know if I was on that ship I would say up close enough for me this is a drop of ole Nelsons and let's drink to him! Close enough for government work

My Grimsby fishermen pals called a dram of rum 'Nelsons blood'' Before the EU put the dagger into the largest fishing fleet in the world when we were trying to get our industry going again through our own waters after Iceland extended their limits. Should be a Sea Shanty about that, The 3 day millionaires we were called. in dock 3 days Away fishing 3 weeks docked got our settlings -wages and share of the catch spent it all in the pubs then back out to sea for 3 more weeks off Iceland 2 weeks North sea.
A good made up origin story could be that is was sung by the crew of the ships that needed to be towed after heavy damage at the battle of Trafalgar. Including nelson's flagship HMS Victory which had to be towed. hence why they "all hang on behind". HMS Victory was starting to get old, built in the 1760's so she could also have been the Old Chariot being rolled around. A younger ship towed her to port for repairs.
We have to have The Shanty of the Week three days a week because the 3 year old doesn't understand “of the week”, so I'm going back to the previous weeks. Rapt attention for Nelson's Blood. A request though - The Wellerman!
