Installing LED Projector headlights in my 2002 Tundra

  • Hey there! Today, I document my install of the $70 COLIGHT led projectors from Amazon on my 2002 Toyota Tundra. They certainly provide a more consistent light output, but also have a prominent blue/purple coloration near the top of the light cutoff (chromatic aberration). The only other thing that I did not mention in the video is that they do not turn off at all while the truck is running, even when the light switch is turned off on the stalk. This is generally not an issue, but something worth noting. I have decided to disable the DRLs and now the lights only come on when the headlight switch is turned to “on”. I used this video, and it applies to first gen Sequoias and Tundras.
    • How to disable Daytime...
    Overall, I am happy with these lights, and I would recommend them because of their impressive light output and ease of install. Thanks for watching! - Sal

    Looks like a terrific setup to replace the stock halogen bulbs. From what I saw on the forums, most of the guys purchased projector headlight assemblies. Realized real quick that they're quite pricey, so these projector LED projector bulbs with stock headlight assemblies look like the ticket for cheapskates like myself! Keep up the great work and affordable mods!

    • @JDMDriveway
      @JDMDriveway  Рік тому +3

      Yep, that was the same thought process that I had. The full retrofit assembly will produce a cleaner light output but they're so expensive, especially if you buy it premade. DIY retrofit is more affordable, but still 3 or 4 times more expensive than these bulbs. That's how I landed on these! Thanks for watching - Sal

    Loving the content. I bought a different brand of LED bulbs for a 2001 tundra and im experiencing the foglight high beam problem. I ordered a resistor as some research on forums yielded testimonies where folks said they only needed one resistor on the driver side bulb to fix the problem with high beams turning on instead of fog lights. I will update this post in case anyone is looking through the comment section like I had.

    Has anyone else’s lights not have as defined cut off line after this retrofit the COLight? For me it’s present on both bulbs but not as crisp a line. My headlight lenses are slightly less than perfect when I followed the cerokote buffing process and they didn’t come out like the results in so many other kits I’ve done. Wondering if the remaining scratches are diffusing the light and this would be the cause.

    • @JDMDriveway
      @JDMDriveway  Рік тому +1

      Hmm yeah that could maybe be the cause, depending on how bad those lenses are. In the mornings when I have frost on my headlights, there isn't any cutoff and it's just all diffused out. So I can imagine that really foggy headlights could cause the same thing. Hope you can get it figured out, thanks for watching - Sal

    So with the high beam stuck on after turning off the fog lights is a common issue. Especially if you install LEDs in both. With that you need a resistor to let it function correctly. From what I've seen if only the headlights are LEDs and fog lights are halogen shouldn't have a problem. But there's always that chance for a first time. Also 1st gen tundras are 00-06 so for the most part headlight and fog lights bulbs are the same. I had a 02 it got wrecked then got a 05 and they all swapped over. Even after having to buy fog light assembly for the 05 since mine didnt have them

      Hey Scotty, that's great info about transferring everything over to the 05. Hey Michael, I also get frustrated with the typical LED upgraded bulbs that most people install and I agree that those are certainly a traffic hazard. That's why I decided to go with these projector style ones which have the glass lens built in to the bulb itself. This creates the cutoff like modern cars have and prevents it from throwing light everywhere like it would if it used the factory reflectors. In my experience I've found that they're very safe to use and don't blind oncoming traffic - Sal

    Either your signal lights are very loose or you are very strong. Them lights are a biotch to remove without damaging them.

      Haha yeah these are aftermarket ones from 1A auto, my original ones were yellowed and cracked. But they were a huge pain to get out. These are a little looser and come out more easily - Sal

    • @JDMDriveway
      @JDMDriveway  2 роки тому +2

      Hey Greg, they should fit right up with no problems. I only have experience doing it on my 02 AC, but other people online have used these in their DC trucks. In fact, one of the reviews on Amazon is from someone using it in a DC tundra. Hope this helps, and thanks for watching - Sal

      Meant to ask, are you able to adjust beam pattern after you install these ? Or are you not able to after removing reflector part

    • @JDMDriveway
      @JDMDriveway  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah you can still adjust the headlights up and down, but they are locked into their horizontal pattern. On these trucks, the whole headlight assembly moves to adjust the beam so that is exactly the same as before - Sal

    Did you put the rubber dust boot around the heat sink!

    • @JDMDriveway
      @JDMDriveway  Рік тому

      No, I actually screwed the heat sink on after fitting the dust boot. It didn't fit with it underneath, and there wouldn't be airflow for cooling. Thanks for watching - Sal

      @@JDMDriveway Have you had any issue with the lights overheating because the dustboot is between the light and cooling system?

    • @JDMDriveway
      @JDMDriveway  Рік тому

      No I haven't. The heat sink is screwed onto the base of the bulb with the dust boot just sandwiched in between so the heat is still passed to the cooling fins no problem. Haven't had any cooling issues yet, and I've had the lights running for 8+ hours before with no issues.
