Fortress built on a nice, calm beach: Gets overwhelmed by goblins just a couple of years in, crumbles to the sea, everyone is dead. Fortress somehow built underground on a literal freezing zombie-filled wasteland: Manages to last more than 20 years, survives opening the gates of hell, twice.
Nobody but the zombies can invade. There is nothing to eat on the surface. Everything is hostile. And your allies can turn on you if they die. Just not worth it.
Well, considering the two experiences, Kruggsmath played very conservatively here, whereas in that sea fortress he just rushed into the major construction project. Two iguanas bound by their tails and fate. They walk in opposite directions; One towards the fort with malicious intent, the other away with a heart of gold and innocent kindness.
If I could wish for a new fortress topic, it would be minecarts. Minecarts are an extremely powerful fortress defense tool and can be fully automated. Even HFS and Titans struggle with supersonic silver minecarts. And if you resist those simple fail proof designs and use your own creativity, they can provide a ton of joy and !!FUN!! when constructing, testing, trying to actually hit the bad guys and not the good ones and when then trying to stop those murder machines again after their more or less succesful application. Minecart grinders, minecart water cannons (or try magma, but that is quite a bit more difficult for DF physics reasons), Minecart coin cannons etc... You can do a lot of funny things there. Just try not to kill any invader with anything but minecarts. :D
Aw man, that addition of marker to the art looks so good! I love it! Also, congrats on dominating the fetid wastes. Your leadership skills are of the highest craftsdwarfship.
Calovie made a statue of Iguanas. Wait... wasn't there a were-iguana in the last episode? Oh! Smelly! Maybe the Dwarves now revere Iguanas as demonic because of how the were-iguanas took away Smelly? The 2 Iguanas depicted in the statue could represent the one that attacked and the one who was forced to leave as a result. These Dwarves are weaving a fascinating mythos of their own.
Sadly all good things must come to an end. These videos are what my dungeon master and I watch before we play d and d. It’s always a lot of fun. Thank you for uploading.

I know they only showed up for a short second, but those skunk brutes looked really pleasant. Almost makes you forget that they're horrifying night terrors from hell.
Was anyone else super pumped to hear that 'That Baby' pulled through? I got really invested in the dwarves of this fortress. Honestly, Skullhorror feels like it's going to be one of those legendary fortresses that dwarves would tell stories of, Dwarves conquering the frozen south. They weren't stopped by zombies or when the surface was coated in slime and became uninhabitable, they learned to be self-sufficient completely locked underground and didn't just survive but thrived, building a fortress that stands as a testament to dwarven daring and fortitude.
i had never heard of dwarf fortress before stumbling on the skullhorror saga. while i'm not really interested in resource management games, i was immediately charmed by the narration style and the choice to illustrate impactful scenes, monsters, artifacts, and of course, the skullhorrorians themselves. it really caught me off guard how into this i got, from the very first few minutes of the dwarves arriving in this wasteland. i binged it all in a night and loved it- i'll be sure to watch the tales of the other fortresses. thank you for a spark of delight and new interest 1 year into this pandemic, it means more than i can say.
This fort must be so incredibly unnerving to see, atop the sea of slime and corpses, stretching into the sky. But then you go in and its just really stable and nice and you leave really confused.
This for was a really great watch ty ty ty for the content. It's always nice when a fort goes out with a bang of intensity, but a successful Fort like this is nice too, they've had their troubles
This story, as its a story of the fort of sort, was simply amazing. May Skullhorror last forever rich in artifacts, adamantine, and brave dwarves! Glory to the original five (seven) founding dwarves! Glory to Skullhammers!
As I’ve grown older I’ve lost interest in gaming channels I used to watch, and even UA-cam, but I’m always excited for a new video from you. The mystery, excitement and narrative is honestly an art... and the art itself... a delight
Awww, I was really hoping to see a longer series again. Do you have any plans to do a truly epic, long lasting fortress where we can all get really invested in the lives of the dwarves and their many accomplishments? You know, like some kind of long running, monster fighting, deep delving soap opera of heroes?
Did you ever watch his delersholid series? It's like 60 eps long. Anyway I think hes waiting for the next update to do another long fort series, because the saves tend not to be compatible with new versions. It's what happened with monster killer.
@@bongosmcdongos4190 Yep, I have watched them all and miss the old epics like Monsterkiller and would really like to see a return to this old formula incorporating everything Krugg has now learned into a super fortress. You make a good point about the update though, perhaps after that hits then :)

Twitch has been my favourite out of the bunch for sure, last episode i couldn't help but imagine the dwarves discussing how to get the adamantine as they see Twitch just running by screaming with a pick in her hand.
It's so nice to see Skullhorror ending just with things getting into a calm... even pace. They went through so much, loosing 2 of their crew members at the start. The looming threat of Zombies. And whatelse tried to wipe this fortress off the map. But they stayed vigilant and with the persistence only a dwarf could show, they fought against what may stand in their way. May Skullhorror last a thousand years and more indeed.
Man, you made it 20 years in an evil zombie-infested frozen hellscape, and I can't even make a successful fortress in the most ideal locations XP Very impressive (by my standards anyway) and entertaining as always.
I think it’s the story and theme of Skullhorror that made me really love this series. Best of luck to the future of the fort! May it remain in the tablets and one-page books of history
I had only heard of this game in a few mentions before, and this has become my current favourite series on UA-cam, I would live it to continue for a few more episodes but thank you for sharing it with us.
This was my first real exposure to the game. Having just seen the ending moments ago, I must say, I loved it. Fantastic storytelling with some great drawings to get the story moving. Going to go binge on whatever other series is on this channel now.
I was hoping you would eventually revisit the idea of a tundra-bastion, rising above the underground fortress, it's mighty butresses flowing with fetid slime and manned by miserable crossbowmen. It would have been cool to see some real zombie-sieges, with the dwarves fighting off hordes of undead.
Love how many social conflicts were able to see resolution in this series. A warming story, and peaceful with neighborly horrors (like they know the Surface is hell enough as-is). Gorgeous sarcophagus. Zombies tend to "sprout" here, so the tulip and the sibling of "balls" -- bulbs, if you're being descriptive instead of prescriptive with your translation -- analogy is a perfect way to capture the object's role in society. While also working as a "do not disturb" sign. Great job.
I am thinking of using this legend of Skull Horror in my next DnD game, having a new group of dwarves exploring ruins and finding the treasures and lore of the fortress through your videos.
Yooooo~ Skullhorror is the first dwarf fortress I've ever seen. I wasn't disappointed. Your story telling and art makes your videos amazing. Thanks for the fantastic series. Hail to those who live and die by Pick and Hammer.

I love that you made a fortress in quite possibly the WORST place you could, opened a tunnel to hell and it just stubbornly refused to collapse into ruin.
I like how this fortress started out as this near apocalyptic zombie survival, with surly unhappy dwarves and no guarantee that anyone would make it. And then a few episodes later it's like "Got some demons down here, no biggie". I really need to try out this game more.
This series was great. I'll admit, even after watching "Your First Fortress," I was still a little hesitant about getting into Dwarf Fortress, but watching the Skullhorror saga is what finally convinced me to install the game. Can't wait to see what unfolds.

Hammer Lord: Flips off the Forgotten Beast On Zospuusnar. "This gives me satisfaction."
Aw man, that addition of marker to the art looks so good! I love it!
Also, congrats on dominating the fetid wastes. Your leadership skills are of the highest craftsdwarfship.
You should try to make the next fortress have a military composed of martial artist, you know the fist-to-face kind of combat!
What a fortress, we shall miss the wonders and creations they produced.
Wasn't it something? Didn't expect so much from it!
I’d love another adventure series that one with the Mobile was nice
One day, one day. The next release will be much better for adventure mode antics!
That armor stand looks so coooool! Oh my god, you've gotten amazing at making those artifacts.. I feel excited just hearing one is made, knowing a fantastic piece will show up to accompany.
Please keep the series going this is my favorite so far
This fort was really surprisingly successful. All those zombies basically keep all the traditional enemies away.
Ive always wanted to see a fortress go for years and years with insanities that destroy it and slowly watch as my sanity is destroyed.
play any fort long enough and they'll all eventually go insane these days :p
Wow I really didn't expect that ending, kinda sad really, but I can barely wait to see what's next
Yeahh, had to cut t off. Not much else to do really other than while away the hours writing books {:)
awww yeah, another video of the "totally a short fort".
(apparently the last video of this fort too, sad.)
HAPPY THANKS GIVING KRUGG WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Happy thanks giving Yackemflam! Hope your day is swell.
To you as well, m'bastard!
Me too!
I would really like to do a longer series again after the next release comes out. I don't really wanna get wrapped up in a new series before that, y'know?
@@kruggsmash Save this fort as it is now, make a backup of it, and then resume playing it as the longer series after a few more Short Forts, perhaps?
@@kruggsmash I really look forward to it and know many of your fans will enjoy it.
You do great work, keep on fighting you glorious bastard!
18:36 Sows or pigs did help found the Skullhorror fortress...
I need to start taking Thursdays off, either that or saving my lunch break for an hour before I leave.
Haha, well that'd be something {:))
Glad you like em' so much!
I cant tell you how much i love these videos. Thankyou.
Great story
Ah now i remember sorry smelly hope she comes back with control of her werebeast form
Awesome end to an awesome fort. Calovy and Twitch are still my favorite characters, i can't wait to see what you do next!
I find my self enjoying this series amidst a serious hangover.
Talk about a real skull horror.
Great job.
I'm really glad that this fort survived, I was rooting for it to be the best damn dwarf fort in the whole world and here it is.
i would like to see more of this fortress, but i am just happy to see you make new videos.
21:18 is meme material at its finest
I am thinking of using this legend of Skull Horror in my next DnD game, having a new group of dwarves exploring ruins and finding the treasures and lore of the fortress through your videos.
This is a fortress that collectively deserves to go down in history. I love how smoothly stuff started going in the end.
Yooooo~ Skullhorror is the first dwarf fortress I've ever seen. I wasn't disappointed. Your story telling and art makes your videos amazing. Thanks for the fantastic series. Hail to those who live and die by Pick and Hammer.
You are so awesome at telling these stories that emerge, and your fantastic illustrations elevates your episodes from a normal Let's Play into a higher artform. Kruggsmash, may your socks never become tattered.
I was not expecting Skullhorror to do so well. Truly a grand fortress!
I hope to see some dwarfs that came from here in future forts
I love that you made a fortress in quite possibly the WORST place you could, opened a tunnel to hell and it just stubbornly refused to collapse into ruin.
Who the next short Fort series should be you playing an Elven fort, you know for Christmas.
Why do I feel genuine emotion watching the legend of Skullhorror come to a close? What a phenomenal journey this has truly been.
