Amber, you called it when you said "Trying to put together a perfect woman." The movie Weird Science is about two teen boys who do just that, Anthony Michael Hall, who you've seen in Breakfast Club and Edward Scissorhands, and Ilan Mitchell Smith actually succeed in creating the perfect woman - Kelly "Don't hate me because I'm beautiful" LeBrock. The ride she takes them on is as mind-bending as Bill & Ted's romp through history. It's a MUST MUST MUST see movie.
As everyone else is saying, this song was the theme to an 80s comedy called Weird Science, which stars Anthony Michael Hall, the nerd from 16 Candles and the Breakfast Club, and a very young Robert Downey Jr. Also, one of the main character's older brother is played by a young Bill Paxton, who was in Titanic and Twister. This movie is hilarious, you should check it out!
In 1970's San Francisco - there were three shows everyone HAD to see: The gay version of Hello Dolly, Bullshot Crummond....and The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo.
Everyone already commented the movie and song. Let me say: If you watch the movie, the lead actress Kelly LeBrock, she actually was the inspiration for Hall & Oats' song "Maneater". John Oats met her in a bar, before she was "really" famous, and she out cussed and out drank every man in the bar. Oats thought to himself, "This woman would eat men alive". ...well paraphrased.
Here's the thing about Danny... Yes, he's a brilliant composer. I adore everything he's done. But he doesn't get enough credit for his performing. He's a great singer, and so much fun onstage! I fell in love with Boingo when a friend dragged me to a show. I literally went out and bought all of their stuff and I've been a huge fan ever since. That was in 1990. My favorite of their albums is actually Dark At The End of The Tunnel. It's perfect. Every song is amazing. And next time you watch Nightmare Before Christmas, listen to Jack's songs. They're just gorgeous! He also did a live show with an orchestra performing those songs. The dude is just really somethin' else. And also, they have a horn section as part of the band. Not just additions here an there. Pretty much in every song. As a trumpet player in my school days, I love that.
Love Weird Science (the movie) one of my favorite teen/comedy movies ever. Seen it a lot of times and it never gets old. Plus, I was a teen when this came out and it was perfect timing for me.
It's true! Elfman IS a musical genius! I became obsessed with him and the band decades ago and every album they put out has great songs all over them! The evolution they went through is interesting too, as the early albums had a strong sinister/creepy vibe to a lot of the songs and hearing how they "matured" in their songwriting while still keeping that dark vibe is just amazing. Listen closely, and you can definitely hear the similar sounds/tones used in Boingo as in Elfman's movie compositions. And it's never talked about, but Boingo's guitarist Steve Bartek also works on all those movie scores with Elfman. You're just barely scratching the surface with this song and Dead man's Party. Don't be afraid to hear their deeper cuts.
You need to listen to "Nothing Bad Ever Happens to Me", "Stay", "Where Do All My Friends Go", "Elevator Man", "We Close Our Eyes", "Not My Slave" - they have SO many great songs!
I had to listen to this several times. Been a minute since I last heard it. Now I have to go and watch Weird Science again…. Love it. Thanks Jay & Amber.
I absolutely loved Oingo Boingo in the mid-80s. In particular, I loved their album “ONLY A LAD”. Every song on that album is fun and awesome. That album has songs like, “Capitalism”, “Little Girls”, “Perfect System”, “Nasty Habits”, and more. The songs are both provocative and funny.
Back in the day, I knew nothing of Oingo Boingo, but I was into discovering new music at the time. I bought "Good For Your Soul" strictly based on the album cover and the band's weird name. I was hooked instantly and eventually bought everything I could find of theirs.
@@beerbratscheese1230 I think I discovered Oingo Bingo by word of mouth from friends probably circa 1984. So I went and purchased “Only A Lad” on cassette. I think I wore it out I listened so many times. I was in college and didn’t have much money. I’m not even sure I ever listened to “Good For Your Soul”. But I will tonight! Thanks!

Great 80s song, from a great 80s movie. One of my favourites from childhood. Kelly LeBrock was my first crush. I even own a few wierd science t-shirts.
Danny Elfman also scored another FANTASTIC comedy, the incomparable, "Beetlejuice" with Michael Keaton, Geena Davis, Alec Baldwin, Catherine O'Hara (the mom in Home Alone) and Winona Ryder.
He's most famous for The Simpsons theme, but has a crazy number of other composing credits, including the Doctor Strange, 50 Shades and Men In Black franchises, and most Tim Burton films.
It blew my mind to learn that Dan Elfman wrote the intro. song that was used in the "Dilbert" TV series from the 1990s! It originally appeared as the intro. for a movie his brother, Richard Elfman, made in 1982, called "Forbidden Zone." Another thing that surprised me was the history of Oingo Boingo. The band came out of a touring act called The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo in the 1970s. They appeared in different venues performing comedy/variety skits. Richard Elfman ran that operation for a number of years, and then finally got tired of it. He decided to "pare down" to a music band, called just "Oingo Boingo." As I mentioned, he also made the movie, "Forbidden Zone." Making movies seemed to be something he tried, but decided not to take further. I didn't even hear about the movie until many years later. Elfman said it caused a lot of controversy in some circles when it came out. Critics called it racist, when that wasn't his intent at all. He said the ideas he had for the comedy in it came out of the town where he grew up, which had a diverse population.

Just another day is an amazing song too
I absolutely LOVE Oingo Boingo! My favorite, because it carries a message, is "Out of Control"
A fun song to a fun movie!! Take it from a scientist, science can be weird at times ,but also very fun.
Also watch Starsky and Hutch, you'll see Jay's go to dance move, it also a great comedy parody of a 70s tv cop show.
another fun factoid - the guitarist in Oingo Boingo (Steve Bartek) is Danny's arranger on those soundtracks and a Julliard graduate.
My second favorite Brat Pack movie! I had such a crush on Kelly LeBrock as a kid. I don’t know many young men back in the 80s who didn’t!
Grey Matter is also a great one
Oingo Boingo has so many many bangers, it’s ridiculous. Sea Man’s Party, Nothing Bad Ever Happens, Cinderella Undercover, Little Girls, Only a Lad, Perfect System … Gratitude (released as Danny Elfman). They were way better than people remember them now for.
"Dead Man's Party" is a great album! I has Weird Science, Dead Man's Party and so many other good ones. One for your collection. The Mystic Knights Of Oingo Boingo debuted on a 70s game show called The Gong Show.
I was 20 in 1980 but for some reason I have never heard of this song before, but I love it. The only concern for me is some of the video, not the song I LOVE IT!!! Fabulous to listen to. I'm from the UK, Liverpool. Great band!! xxx
Now you’ve gotta watch the movie this song goes to! HILARIOUS!
Oingo Boingo is one of the best 80s band. Love everything that Danny Elfman is a part of. Check out Little Girls.
