Vince's beer story reminded me of my father as he never talked about "The War". He took me to see two movies, A bridge too far and The Longest Day. He was at both. My father was 101st and he too never talked about the war and he was career army, was in the army before 12/7/41. I found aout after he crossed over and mom followed I was able to get his record DD214. He went from africa all the way to germany. Mostly on foot and then he joined the airborne. He never ever talked about the war. He was at Bastogne. 7 combat arrows (major fights), wish I knew him better. Respect. Honor. Ungodly amount of Courage. God Bless Them All and get some more beer.
They definitely wouldn't talk about it. My Dad was stationed on a destroyer that was in Pearl on 12/7/1941. They managed to get out into open water while firing on the Jap Zeros. Later on, his ship was it by two torpedoes. My Uncle Jim was in the Army, Big Red One. Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and no matter how much I begged him he wouldn't talk about it. He did get the Troix De Guerre (sp?) pinned on by Gen Charles De Gaul. RIP
My grandfather, Felix Page Branham was with the 29th Division K Company 29th Division that invaded Normandy on June 6th, 1944. War hero and a great story teller. God bless The Greatest Generation.
My Grandpa was a Lt. With the Lincoln and Welland Regt. He was one of only three officers that returned . He landed in Bergen Op Zoom liberating Holland and Belgium. I miss him so much . Truly great men🫡🇨🇦 when I went to Germany with the Army I brought a poppy home pressed in a book. Only time I ever saw him cry. 😢
Soldiers of all ages and generations who’ve experienced combat, will always find common ground in their funny stories. No matter the battlefield, or era they will find common ground in the levity of the hells they walked through.
Leave it to a fellow NYer to have the best story (or at least my favorite) out of WWII. The twist at the end is so good I don't know if I'm going to laugh or cry every time I hear/read it; get his book. There are so many more great details to this story.
