2000 Jeep XJ (Cherokee) Bedlining the headliner with Raptor liner

  • Our Jeeps headliner had the typical headliner sag. At some point the previous owner removed the headliner material and left the exposed foam. This has gone brittle and started to fall off. In this episode we use Raptorliner bedliner to line our headliner. This is a great upgrade and can certainly recommend it

    Just a little idea; spray a couple coats of clear coat. We did the Rhino liner on a Bronco top, then clear coated it. It turned out amazing, and makes cleaning a real joy! Looks great! Great idea! I will be doing my 95' Cherokee! Thanks!👍😉

    Really cool idea I like people who think outside the box. I have a headliner speaker box that I was debating on wrapping but I also have a bunch of bedliner I would rather use. Thanks for the idea.

    Excllent video. Thanks for being so detailed about the process. Great choice the spray liner over the cloth, should be much easier to clean plus it should have a bit of strength.

      Martin - yes cleaning is very easy! So far we are still very happy with the results!

    Looks great from here. I have a 2001 XJ the guy before me put black material up on the head liner. For me it a bit dark. I have other projects going on first with my XJ but with how well your looks I’m going to do mine with Raptor liner in a lighter color. Thank you your video of removal and installation after liner I learned a lot. Your lucky to have the family to help out.

      Good luck, let us know how it turns out. If at all possible let that raptor liner cure outside for as long as you can, that will help reduce the smell. Ours only cured for one day, would have like to let it sit a little longer. More than a year later and it is still exactly as it was in the video!

    A good trick to remove the old foam is a firm bristled scrub brush. I got one that's about the size of my hand from the dollar store. We did that to my wife's xj for now. It doesn't look too bad as a bare fiberglass headliner. Suits the jeep well with its 333k miles. We'll eventually put a new liner in there. I like your idea of using truck bed liner. It'll last longer than the jeep.

      Thanks for the advice Adrian, If we do it again we will use a scrubbing brush to get the old foam off.

    Great idea! I'm doing mine that way. I think I will add stick on insulation between the ceiling and liner. Probably don't need it but....

      Arkikecto we agree, putting additional insulation for heat and acoustics onto the roof before installing the bedlined headliner is a good idea.

    Etch fill primer next time first before raptor liner should fill in any voids and make it all stick more evenly

      I have seen some people glue thermal barrier onto the roof before installing the headliner - I would look into doing this as it makes sense to me.

    Hello i just raptor lined my headliner in my xj after seeing your video and it came out great and im super happy with it. Its been about a day since I installed it in my jeep. Left my windows cracked all night and im still getting a strong smell of spray paint. How long did that last for you? Bc if the smell doesnt go away im gonna have to find a new headliner😂.

    • @theshop392
      @theshop392  Рік тому +2

      I am glad you are happy with the results. I let my headliner cure overnight before I installed it so missed the worst of the smell. What was left goes away after a couple of days - I kept my windows open at night which helped. I was fortunate that it was the middle of Alabama summer so standing in the sun during the day helped it cure pretty quickly.

    You can just pull toward you from the back and slide the liner out and save all that trim tool work

    Has this helped keep it cooler inside? I have a '96 XJ Cherokee and in the summer months if it's 90° F outside then it's about 120° F inside!

    • @theshop392
      @theshop392  Рік тому +1

      Unfortunately I don't think it has helped to cool, we are in Alabama with temps over 100F outside - at that point we depend on the AC

    Thanks for the idea! I have mine taken down and I’m thinking on putting back a cloth material again but now you have me second guessing. How is it holding up?

    • @theshop392
      @theshop392  Рік тому +3

      It is holding up great, so far. I really am happy and would certainly do it again if I ever have another XJ. It did take a while for the paint smell to stop though.

    • @ryanleukhardt6720
      @ryanleukhardt6720 Рік тому +2

      @@theshop392 that was going to be my question. How was the gassing off the liner? Was it overwhelming or just a bit of smell and eventually if went away? Have you used it during "hot" months to see if it softens and let's off more smell?

    • @theshop392
      @theshop392  Рік тому +3

      @Ryan Leukhardt Ryan - We let the headliner cure in the sun for two days before we installed it. There was a little smell for about 3 weeks when the car had been parked with the windows closed overnight or in the sun during the day. This was right through the Alabama summer with temperatures well over 100F. With winter now here the smell is gone. Still a great decision and definitely something we would do again.

    • @theshop392
      @theshop392  Рік тому +1

      Jose we have had it up now for a few months through summer temperatures well over 100F. No issues so far!

    How are the acoustics in the car with that material? Is the road noise more noticeable? Is is holding on well?

    • @theshop392
      @theshop392  Рік тому +2

      Perry, I can't really tell the difference in terms of noise from before. My XJ has mud tires so the road noise has always been there. I would certainly do this again.
