I replaced my headliner on my 98 ZJ all thanks to your help Matt. I went with a Star Wars fleece. The only thing that was difficult was lining up the pattern on the center console and the visors. I posted a pic on the website. Thanks again Matt.
Here was the tale of our castaway-keep a jeep for a long long time- he'll help you make the best of things-it's an uphill climb. Thanks Bleepinjeep Dude.
Looks great, that wouldn't be my first choice for a headliner print. I have done two headliners and I did my first one like you did. The second one I sprayed half at a time and it was so much easier. It came out better as well, I had much more control over the fabric.
Matt, I just wanted to let you know how helpful this video and all of your other videos have been. I recently bought my first vehicle, a '98 xj and your videos have helped me greatly with fixing it up. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
You can use a hypodermic needle and squirt glue in there if you have an spots that come down over time, some people do the visors to match but some don't. You can use any fabric , its doesn't have to be stretchy I used camo pattern from Joann fabric(they have coupons on the website) and the 3M spray glue , let it sit in the sun to cure for an afternoon will help it last longer too
Matt, I did an install using your video advice and all went well except Super 77 is not meant to do headliners (it's primary use is for art stuff). I found out the hard way, I installed mine using Super77 and the weather got hot for an extended period and it failed. I don't think it never got a chance to really setup. Now I'm going to have to do a redo. FYI, I did a good job getting all the old stuff off and used a cotton jersey material.
I did my first headliner on my BMW with a suede that has literally no stretch. I too found I didn't love the 90 it does work and it is strong but I used the Permatex Headliner glue and loved it and it was easy to find locally at Advance Auto. I went through about 3 cans of the stuff though on a tiny little coupe. I do think it's important to keep a foam backed headliner style material even though the foam is what ends up failing. It's easier when you're spraying liberal amounts of glue on it as it doesn't let it absorb to the visible surface. I'll be doing this on my ZJ fairly soon as I've decided to get it back to full time street duty.
That "glue" that you removed with a brush is actually the foam that was attached to the original headliner. As the glue gave way, the foam stayed attached to the headliner and the fabric came loose from the foam. The reason for the foam is for insulation for weather and sound. So it isn't completely necessary, but I wouldn't go without it because if you live up north then you'd have to expect a lot of condensation in wet weather and you will notice ice crystals forming inside the cab in winter. Remove all the old foam, and install real headliner material. Real headliner material has a foam backing. Same process, but it's better for your vehicle.
Agreed. just about every headliner material is foam backed. The upholstery shops have it in big rolls, the OEM colors too. Black would have been the better choice in this example !
Dude. This is the best diy video on headliner repair I've seen and I'm so happy I stumbled upon it. I hope this works for my 2003 BMW I just got because the headliner is falling and gross and tan and changing it to black would be amazing. Thank you so much for showing how to do such a professional job and posting this video! You're awesome!
Hey! Great videos, very informative! I'm about to tackle removing/replacing my headliner. I was curious if you could tell me how to remove the cargo light in the headliner. Haven't figured it out and don't want to wreck it. Thanks!
What are the odds that this video gets published now and I just bought the glue. I was going to buy some special headliner material but now that I've seen this I'll just pick up some grey fleece at the craft store. Good work, Matt!
I'm on my second XJ now..... I really, really wish I had seen this video when I had my '87 2 door as the headliner fabric was completely gone. I just left it alone. My '96 XJ headliner has some defects and needs repairs, along with the obligatory fabric replacement. Great video and thank you for helping us all out.
Followed all these steps...only differences i made were: I did the gluing by myself in sections it was not that difficult...I also used a thin twin xl blanket. Bought it and the glue for ten bucks. It looks lovely... 😁😁
Nice video man, and just so you know the glue stuff from under the head liner is actually the foam backing on the original fabric. Its so the glue has a better grab on the fabric and doesn't bleed into the liner. You can go to Joann fabrics and get that same foam backed material but isnt not in any crazy colors like you decided to use... i had to wear sunglasses watching this!
I bought my Jeep with absolutely no cloth left on the headliner, the old owner ripped it all out. I'm thinking of using a naked woman pattern, Danny Glover style
I have a 99 without an overhead console and a 98 with an overhead console and I need to swap the two. Can you give me some info on what I might need to know before diving into this project? How difficult would it be to remove the wiring harness from the 98? And getting the 99 console with the dome light into the 98 is the most important thing at the moment. Should it plug right in?
Thanks for the video man. All the vids on your channel have been very helpful and well put together. New Jeeper here and I can't wait to take on some of the how to's you've shared. By the way, nice shop. Cheers!
Sweet. I have no headliner and been wanting to replace it for a while. You know what years I could interchange the headliner? I have 94 zj and was wanting the extra speakers.
Awesome and very informative video! I do have a question though.. The previous owner of my jeep put a new headliner in my jeep but he didn't make a hole for the moon roof, i can cut one out, but i cant seem to find a way of supporting the headliner at the hole,, Any suggestions?
Matt thank you its nice to have a channel to go to for all my XJ needs. I'm new to the Jeep market and especially the XJ and your channel is a huge help! May I make a suggestion and do a series/special on the Renix series XJ'S. Just a thought. Subscriber for life!
Awesome vid, I need to do this to my 97 jeep GC lorado. Lol but I want to put in a retractable sun/moon roof I saw once on a car show. I think it will look cool.
well the good news is I found what I was looking for, its called a folding sunroof. and if I have my way, ill go for the 40x70 for around 800 bucks. so heres to penny pinching!
get video. got a quote for $350 to have a auto upholstery shop do this. got the fleece at Joann fabics ($12 for 3 yards) and the 3M 77 adhesive spray at Home Depot (2@ $9.99 ea). i spent $11 at autozone for new dome lights since it was all down, might as well replace them too. Less than $50 and it looks good. Thank You for the lesson.
Matt, Did you add any sound deadener to the roof when you did the headliner? I'm looking at picking some up on Amazon. Seems like a worthwhile task since the headliner will be out anyways.
The original headliner has a kind of a foam backing, flexible though. I think this helps deaden the sound. When we redid the falling headliner on the 99 XJ we purchase material that had this same time of backing.
Everyone I talked to that used super 77 it didn't last very long. I think the fleece you need to throw in the washer/dryer before-hand to get rid of any loose fibers. I used the #90 on mine and it seems to be holding well. Just can't let it sit too long or the glue dries too fast and wont stick
I just went to the pull a part today and pulled a headliner with the sound bar out of a 2000 model. My only concern is that the dome light for the 2000 was bigger than my 96 dome light and therefore the hole in the headliner is bigger. What are my options? I have the 2000 model dome light with the headliner but I’d imagine I would have to do a lot of wiring to make it work.
Great video! Would have been helpful if you uploaded this a year sooner! I love the choice of material. Was going to do something crazy for my XJ but wimped out. btw 'MERICA!
While the pattern is enough to cause someone to go into a full blown seizure, it is a great DYI video. Beats the hell out of the $200 I was quoted to do mine. After watching the full video either the pattern started to grow on me or I became pattern blind lol. Keep up the good work
Yes but after seeing how easy it is I think would like to do it myself and save the money for something else plus the endless options it gives to make it your own personal touch.
It should stick but wont "conform" as well as foam backed headliner. There are tons of foam backed patterns for headliner on eBay though. Just search "desert marpat headliner" on ebay for example if you want to replicate the pattern Tyler used on Project Tetanus.
Center celing thing, more info? Redo? Upgrade?. Just redid my headliner with bedliner, wish I had the video. Don't like current celing console, considering custom light weight wood
BleepinJeep okay i got it out thanks. There was one screw up front an then there are two tabs front and back so you have to slide it back then forward.
If you haven’t, you should update this and inform viewers that Super 77 is not the proper adhesive to use. Not nearly the heat tolerance required. Risking too much time, energy and money on useless adhesive using 77.

Did my headliner in my XJ yesterday. Thanks for the video. It was a lot easier than I thought. I dig the channel.
New to the jeep world here, thanks for this video! Got a 97 ZJ and loving it!
Here was the tale of our castaway-keep a jeep for a long long time- he'll help you make the best of things-it's an uphill climb. Thanks Bleepinjeep Dude.
Ripp Russell thanks for the rhyme!
Looks great, that wouldn't be my first choice for a headliner print. I have done two headliners and I did my first one like you did. The second one I sprayed half at a time and it was so much easier. It came out better as well, I had much more control over the fabric.

Ethan Pitsenbarger no problem, glad to hear it!
Man your videos have my my current and past 6 Jeeps fun to work on
You seriously are the bob ross of the Jeep world haha
Thanks for the great info !!!

thtas what i did. and its damn easier to glue real headliner material than fabric. less wrinkles and easier to handle imo

First educational video in the newish shop looks great
Jason Pfeifer thanks Jason
Mow I have the very tough choice of what pattern fabric. And one that wont irritate me 6months from now
I saw someone do this and they recommended your video I love it!
Hey! Great videos, very informative! I'm about to tackle removing/replacing my headliner. I was curious if you could tell me how to remove the cargo light in the headliner. Haven't figured it out and don't want to wreck it. Thanks!

Dan Cole no problem, what kind of glue did you get?
Permatex 27828 Body Shop Heavy Duty Headliner and Carpet Adhesive, 16.75 oz Aerosol Can www.amazon.com/dp/B000HBNU9K/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_JH2Aub075XXW8

Ryan Sanders lol, ok thanks for the info...
Going to start this today. Lots of discussion in what glue to use. I sure don’t want to do this twice. What is the best glue ???
Thanks for your videos! I just got a 97' Cherokee that I'm going to customize!
Nice video!
Could u tell me what kind of glue did u use for the headliner ? whats the name of it ?
Thank you!!!!
How do I reupholster a 97-01 overhead console?? Does it work the same
Can you use 100% cotton fabric? I found patterns I like but they aren't stretchy like fleece and slightly thinner comparative.
I bought my Jeep with absolutely no cloth left on the headliner, the old owner ripped it all out. I'm thinking of using a naked woman pattern, Danny Glover style
Is fleece a good material for a headliner? I need to replace mine, and fleece is certainly easier to get than pursuing headliner material.
How many yards of fabric should I get In order to make sure I have enough to do the headliner and the sun visors
What year jeep did u get the board from....that has the speakers in board itself
As always, very informative. You make this stuff look so easy!
William Kaczmarek thanks, glad to hear it!
Can I put those hook backed Velcro type patches on this
Thanks for the video man. All the vids on your channel have been very helpful and well put together. New Jeeper here and I can't wait to take on some of the how to's you've shared. By the way, nice shop. Cheers!
Got Leak Thanks man, glad to hear it!
can you do a custom leather dash for an xj?
I'm doing a heifer with fabric from hobby lobby. not headliner material. do I need to add a 1/4 in foam first for backing or does it matter? thanks
Could you tell us the measurements of material piece you used to fix your headliner?
Thats an interesting pattern choice you went with there....
Sweet. I have no headliner and been wanting to replace it for a while. You know what years I could interchange the headliner? I have 94 zj and was wanting the extra speakers.
Alex Thelen not positive on the ZJ but the XJ's all interchange.
Awesome and very informative video! I do have a question though.. The previous owner of my jeep put a new headliner in my jeep but he didn't make a hole for the moon roof, i can cut one out, but i cant seem to find a way of supporting the headliner at the hole,, Any suggestions?
I would say you may need to find one at a junkyard and study how it goes together. You may have to get some parts from it or the headliner itself.
Can I add hooked backed patches on it
Great video. Followed the video and put in a "The Walking Dead" headliner in my '95 XJ.
I'm going to mount my ox locker lever to the roof. Whatcha think?
I was planning on doing this soon so perfect timing for me thanks for the video.
***** no problem, send a pic to the fb page when you get er done.
hey thanks for the infro...I use it for my 89 subruban Chevy
Matt thank you its nice to have a channel to go to for all my XJ needs. I'm new to the Jeep market and especially the XJ and your channel is a huge help! May I make a suggestion and do a series/special on the Renix series XJ'S. Just a thought. Subscriber for life!
brewskisdodge All of the crawler and zombie jeep videos were Renix.
sweet thanks!!
Good job Matt on the head liner. But the fabric chose is nauseating, I would worn your passengers that the head liner may indues vertigo.
Phillip Bishop Thats what I was going for;)
Hay Matt my girlfriend watched the video and now I'm gonna be doing a my little pony vs. Monster high head liner for the kid's wish me luck
Phillip Bishop lol, I need to see a picture of that for sure!
Where did you get that fleece blanket?
Awesome vid, I need to do this to my 97 jeep GC lorado. Lol but I want to put in a retractable sun/moon roof I saw once on a car show. I think it will look cool.
Dan Acton good luck!
well the good news is I found what I was looking for, its called a folding sunroof. and if I have my way, ill go for the 40x70 for around 800 bucks. so heres to penny pinching!
its from legacy products ... I think is the name of the company should anyone else wishes to do this also. I think there cheapest is like 500.00ish
get video. got a quote for $350 to have a auto upholstery shop do this. got the fleece at Joann fabics ($12 for 3 yards) and the 3M 77 adhesive spray at Home Depot (2@ $9.99 ea). i spent $11 at autozone for new dome lights since it was all down, might as well replace them too. Less than $50 and it looks good. Thank You for the lesson.
I did everything you said and it looks great! But now the interior lights and the visor lights don't work. What could've caused that?
Turned out to just be the dome fuse. Make sure to disconnect the negative battery terminal before messing with any of the lights or electrics
How many cans of that did you use on that?
Will this get in the way of side air bags? and does anyone know where to get the "air bag" fabric decals?
gonna try this next week thanks guys
Will a 89 headliner board fit in my 2001 ?
Matt, Did you add any sound deadener to the roof when you did the headliner? I'm looking at picking some up on Amazon. Seems like a worthwhile task since the headliner will be out anyways.
The original headliner has a kind of a foam backing, flexible though. I think this helps deaden the sound. When we redid the falling headliner on the 99 XJ we purchase material that had this same time of backing.
Dan Cole no i didn't, the fleece is pretty thick and I would imagine most of the sound comes from below the vehicle anyway.
the glue doesn't leak through to the fabric?
Everyone I talked to that used super 77 it didn't last very long. I think the fleece you need to throw in the washer/dryer before-hand to get rid of any loose fibers. I used the #90 on mine and it seems to be holding well. Just can't let it sit too long or the glue dries too fast and wont stick
+DexterGoneWild all mine with 77 have lasted the life of my vehicles...
+BleepinJeep oh crap now I don't know what to think of the 77....
:-/
I just went to the pull a part today and pulled a headliner with the sound bar out of a 2000 model. My only concern is that the dome light for the 2000 was bigger than my 96 dome light and therefore the hole in the headliner is bigger. What are my options? I have the 2000 model dome light with the headliner but I’d imagine I would have to do a lot of wiring to make it work.
Use the 2000 light.
Great video! Would have been helpful if you uploaded this a year sooner! I love the choice of material. Was going to do something crazy for my XJ but wimped out. btw 'MERICA!
how much fabric did you get to do the headliner, I have an 87 XJ
More than I needed, 4 yards I think.
Awesome I got more than enough for mine thank you for replying to my comment
+chris rasmussen how wide did you go with the fabric too?
Great Video Man! Are you gonna make a video on how to install one of those newer style overhead consoles on the older style XJ Interior? Thanks
WeLiveJeep no, but I guess you would just need to steal the bracket from the later model and glue or weld it into the earlier one.
I would of saved the time and coverd it will cardboard and self tappers. The screws coming through the roof would also double as a spot for tie downs.
haw do ypu take the dom lights off
Super 90 is really strong, but it has a short working period
While the pattern is enough to cause someone to go into a full blown seizure, it is a great DYI video. Beats the hell out of the $200 I was quoted to do mine. After watching the full video either the pattern started to grow on me or I became pattern blind lol. Keep up the good work
Chris Beve $200 bucks, I guess I can see that if they have to pull it out and reinstall.
Yes but after seeing how easy it is I think would like to do it myself and save the money for something else plus the endless options it gives to make it your own personal touch.
Chris Beve of course
could i use the 1000 denier cordura fabric? or would that fabric be too heavy ?
how many cans of super 77 should i buy?
any thoughts?
1 can... I have no idea what cordura fabric is...
it is the heavy duty nylon cloth Tyler used in the "Make your own Custom Sun Visors" video
It should stick but wont "conform" as well as foam backed headliner.
There are tons of foam backed patterns for headliner on eBay though. Just search "desert marpat headliner" on ebay for example if you want to replicate the pattern Tyler used on Project Tetanus.
I rested my OHC on my rear view mirror and ripped the mirror right off the windshield.
Center celing thing, more info? Redo? Upgrade?. Just redid my headliner with bedliner, wish I had the video. Don't like current celing console, considering custom light weight wood
+Mike Gonzales its a stock option, you can find them at the junkyard
How did that turn out Mike with the bedliner? You took the headliner out and then sprayed or sprayed bedliner on the fiberglass piece that comes out?
Thanks for the good video. Well done and very helpful. T
NICE VID! Keep em comin!
How much fabric should I buy I have a 99 xj but I don't have that center console on my headliner
measure your roof and add a foot or two
Ok
i got three yards for my ZJ and i had a little bit left over
How much material do I need width and length?
I got 9 feet (3 yards) or 58 inch wide fabric. Perfect amount foe the headliner and visors. Id het more if you plan on doing an overhead console too.
is there a way to install an overhead console like yours in an 88 cherokee?
KRYSPYKRUNCH if you take the metal pieces that it mounts to out of the donor, then you'd have to glue or weld them in the roof of the 88.
alright ill give it a try
That material is clownin I can't believe u put that in lol
How did you take that ceiling consul off? I'm trying to remove mine.
I think there are a couple screws to unscrew then it slides back... if I remember correctly
I need to do this soon, but with an American flag!
Where did you get your headliner?
Canadian Cherokee Joanne Fabrics
and why the 70 vs 90 glue?
Nice
I am going to buy a bear rug and use it as the headliner. How use the open mouth to keep some glasses and a pin with his teeth.
where did you get your fabric? does walmart sell big enough sheets?
Yes they do but I got this at Joannes Fabric
hobby lobby is good too
Great video, thanks, your headliner new material is awful though xD
HAHAHAHAHA! That has got to be the ugliest headliner I have ever seen! Awesome! 😄
agreed 90 sucks!
"its going to look like this"
homie mine is missing and idk where it went
Super 77 sucks its not high heat rated, use the 90 high strength high heat green can!
Mike Calafatis actually they both suck!
mine came out nice !
pro tip: don't do it on a 100 degree day with your wife ...
Lmao ur voice is soothing
I can't find a headliner anywhere!!!
j. alexander fabric stores, online etc
IceMan Aaron specifically the mineral wool like padding
Dude.......I love yall's videos, but er muh gerd that's an ugly headliner. LOL.
confederate flag, shoot, you could drive through L.A. no problem!
La de da lol
