This is actually my indie game of the year so far. Doesn't break any new ground but the dynamics between the game mechanics and charm of the game are show stoppers for me. I can see how this might not appeal to everyone though as it can be a bit grindy. Appreciate the honest review as always!

Only thing is it aint indie lol the devs are Nexon which are far from Indie but also have a lot of bad press latley so they hide behind MINTROCKET which is still Nexon

i'd put Tchia and Dredge above this, but still reasonably fun...sort of agree with WAB that it's little boring, lots of busy work.

Thanks for the vid Mac. I might give it a shot. Shadows of Doubt is worth checking out if you like deep immersive detective work. First person with so much detail. Very addictive game.

clearly he didn't get very far into it. the fish farm, the rice farm, once you start growing your own fish and get deeper in the ocean, its insane, progression done well. Only thing i wished is it wasn't soo linear, like you cant get through the story in a unique way. there's one path to the end, that's it. procedurally generated didn't even matter.
I generally think the story beats are very too scripted and hand holdey. I like the gameplay loop and having just reached the village Im impressed with the amount of stuff there is to be unlocked after quite a few hours of gameplay... That said though, doing the actual story missions is never really fun or satisfying, they interface awkwardly with the base gameplay loop and the pacing is all over the place.

I suspect what didn't work for mac was the loading between each element (something valheim had almost none of). Essentially, the game is an extended self directed fetch quest loop, with a bunch of mini games between. It becomes a bit grindy in the mid game. A bit of a chore. But, if you find the release that the game rewards between each segment fun, then it'll be addictive.
Definitely my type of game. Shame it doesn't support ultra wide and the full screen isn't actually full screen rather window borderless.
I've been playing it for a few hours now, really good stuff.
If you like metroidvania with a bit of restaurant management, it's really good.
A bit slow to start, because you don't get much money for upgrades at first, upgrades are hard earned but satisfying.
I'd give it an 8/10.

Good game initially for me but after @4-5 hrs in (got to underwater village), I really starting to feel the limits of the game loop, which, as you said, is too similar/repetitive, and 15min later I just had enough. I applaud the developers though for the fairly fresh take in this game, its presentation and quirky chrs. But I think many people will start to fall off at around 4-6hr in, unless ofc this is your kind of game.

Some ppl just get addicted to the whole hole experience. I get that. But not everyone likes the same kind of holes. Hole diversity matters I say!

I quite like the gameplay loop. but the game has way too many instances where cutscenes and scripted sequences take away control or forces you to sit through pages of dialogue. I honestly quite liked a lot of the characters but the mission designs are super heavy handed and doesnt really interface very well with the general gameplay loop.
There are also really cool aspects of the game which are unlocked way too late imo.
Went in another hole yesterday myself, it was not blue but it did smell fishy.

Solid 9/10 game. From this gameplay footage, it looks like he's catching and serving very low value fish, which would certainly slow down the progression of the game by making very limited profit.
I often agree with your reviews and I accept that this one is just not for you, but for me this is one of the most surprising games since a long time. I absolutely love the gameloop, the graphics, the variety, everything. I like it a hole lot.

I like it a lot! Much love went into animations and minigames, you feel that the devs really tried. Fair enough if its not your cup of tea, but give it a try^^
So is it Moonlighter but under water or is there more to it? Because I found the gameplay loop in Moonlighter fun but far too shallow to complete it.

Picked it up on a whim and really like the graphical style and the chill gameplay - as much as I've seen this game, it seems to have been put together with a lot of care and attention. I'd rate it higher than Mack for that reason. However, clearly this may not be to everyone's taste.
Scuba Dive on the ZX Spectrum was one of my favourite games so might give this one a go!

I wish I had listened to you, Mack. I haven't been this bored in a game since Star Dew Valley. I'm really surprised by all the praise it's received. It kind of feels like a bunch of mobile games bolted together.
Reminds me a lot of a mobile game i used to play where youd see how far you can dive and collect trinkets and gems and shit
I bought it and played it past the 2 hour mark and then... after that, that's when I realized "Ahh.. shit. It's a Nexxon game." I tried to avoid them. WTF ever, I like it for what it is.
I like the idea but the resturant part doesn't do it for me. I want the diving part..
yea i feel pretty much the same pal, diving was fairly alright but as soon as i had to run left and right i was out and refunded

I have to agree, the gameplay loop is pretty boring. They might add new mechanics regularly but hardly any of them matter. I never used the farms after the inital introduction, still had loads of money. Never felt I needed to hand in the ecowatcher tasks or anything. Eventually you have so many fish that catching new ones is pointless.

Fascinating, perhaps it's harder for games to make you love them as you get older, Dave the Diver is doing stupidly well on Steam sitting high in the top 100, developers Nexon or Mintrocket must be doing something right as the majority like the game.
The German version of Eurogamer gave this game a 5/5. I was somewhat sceptical because the game loop didn't look that interesting to me. Thanks for giving us another perspective!

As someone who keeps salt water fish, seeing tangs and butterfly fish on a sushi menu is messed up.
Even genuinely good, reasonably priced indie games without scummy AAA tactics get a 6/10 from Mack these days. Hope you are taking care of yourself bro

I haven been scrolling through the top 10 ''worth a buy'' channels regarding ''DAVE THE DIVER''. You know why Mack is standing out to all the other channels? He is literally the only one that doesn't try to SELL the game. THANK YOU Mack for being truely yourself and being sincerely honest about videogames. I have mad respect for you!
He's standing out because he's the only one who couldn't articulate anything about the game. It might be honest to say a game is "not for me", but if you can't explain why, don't bother reviewing it. Genuinely worst review I've ever seen him do, it told me nothing.
@@Snuffsaid2007 Totally agree. This is where you see if a reviewer is good or not: being able to talk about the game despite not liking it. Mark failed hard at this. Very few reviewers can do it, though. TB was one of them: he managed to sell me a game he didn't enjoy because he was able to see past his personal tastes and actually talk about the game in an objective way.
I'm not sure Mark even played a lot. It's hard to say, he may just want to avoid spoilers, but he doesn't even mention how the game keeps adding new mechanics and things to do.

After the IGN review (9) I gave it a try, but I should have listened to you. The diving and fishing where you shoot a hook is boring, serving peeps is sooo slow and boring. If you want a fishing game I recommend Dredge which is fantastic from the beginning. Also games like Stardew Valley, Dinkum and Core Keeper are so much fun especially in co-op mode. Dave the Diver doesn't work for me either.
Fair enough, not all holes are for everyone.

I loved it but refunded after that daft restaurant bit. I liked the chill of the fishing bit but couldn't stand that fucking waiter game.
Its not like marriage because even thou its the same hole, you get to dive in it 2 times a day =).

You heap praise on everything about the game but can't really get any deeper than saying it didn't appeal to you for some reason.
That reason (or reasons) is what would make this review helpful. I hear plenty of people praising this game to the moon but when I watch the game play it just looks boring to me. So I've been on the fence about giving it a try.
Just to proactively counter anyone who might say 'if the gameplay looks boring to you then you obviously won't like it'. Watching someone play Diablo 2, 3 and now 4 can put me to sleep they are so incredibly boring to watch on stream. When I play them hands on I get fully invested in my characters growth and I have a real good time with them.
Edit: Normally love your work. I'm subscribed to this channel as a fan and not a hater. This one wasn't helpful though.
I dunno, sometimes you just dont like something though you can appreciate its qualities, like jazz it has everything i like, nice chord changes, good beat i just dont like it
I would probably like it if not for the sushi bar part. Kind of reminds me of Moonlighter where the dungeon crawling gameplay was pretty fun and then you're forced into the incredibly un-fun shop management gameplay.

My two summer sale games were this and Core Keeper. I am alternating between being bored and having fun every 30 minutes in Dave the Diver. Didn´t start Core Keeper yet. Hoping the best!
All these games with dreary jobs people normally get paid not well to do in real life, especially with all this obsession about food and food preparation... it's so groan. I was very excited about how this game looked but I played the early access, got bummed out by having to work in a restaurant, and refunded the thing. I couldn't bear another game loop.
I'd rather have the marmite straight from the jar than play this, oh wait I love marmite.....yah now some people are going to enjoy this just not moi.

Maybe it comes down to the enjoyment of the minigames. Here, it feels like a series of minigames you would find on an iphone/android, but we've been bombarded with for so long we're desensitized. Unlike your review of Dredge.

Deep gameplay / repetative gameplay. You either love or hate it but I don't love it or hate it. This review is broken.
Its all about personal opinions and preferences at the end of the day. Some games that do, do it for Mack havent done it for me unfortunately, but a few have like Prey, Genesis Alpha One and Dungeons 3.
Seems like gameplay on a short loop, not my thing. It does look polished and it clearly has its own style

I really like this game but I think it's the biggest problem is piecing. Sometimes you get stuck with three or four cutscenes in a row that you can't really skip cuz they're dumping story in new upgrades and new ways of playing the game on you and then other stretches you're just doing basic fetch quests for an hour across an undersea Village that is far too big of a map for what it is. Guys about Early Access and we're talking with the Dells the dress this but it seems like they didn't really go into how it was being pasted all.
