  • Are you struggling with your dog? Are they chewing up shoes, counter surfing or worse - being aggressive toward people or other animals? One of the best things you can do to help get your pooch in balance is to kennel your dog. Dogs that get to free-roam in a house are just looking for trouble and often will find it, which is part of the reason you are struggling with them. Puppies are not the only ones to benefit from being in a kennel, older dogs can benefit too! The kennel doesn't have to be forever, but it will definitely help get you back on track with your dog to find the balanced relationship you and your dog need!

    Thank you! I regret letting my 1 1/2 yr old dog out of crate because he now wakes up at 4:00 instead of 5:30 or so. He lies back down but we’re all interrupted. Soooo back to crate training.

    • @leadoffleashk9training

      Yes, get the crate back out. Maybe use ear plugs too. I can get dogs on my schedule in 2 or 4 days. Every-single-one-of-them (hundreds) that comes through here; so just go for it! If it is a puppy make sure they don;t have to pee/eliminate, but most dogs can easily go 11 hours overnight for example (as I throw a few of those nights into the training program)

      @@leadoffleashk9training my dog has been doing awesome! Just took a couple nights to get back on track and reacquainted with the crate again. We now have sleep again, we all go to bed by 10 or so and get up at 5:30. He also comes to work with us (we’re self employed) so he is very busy all day saying hi to our employees, I take him on several walks a day or more and lots of affection and play time. Not a bad life!!

    How do you teach the word for the kennel? And can you do a video on how you work on the phase where you get to closing the door and eventually walking away? My dog is comfortable in the crate and will lay in there but only if I’m in the room and only if the door is open. I go back to work in a week and will need him to be more comfortable 😅

    • @leadoffleashk9training
      @leadoffleashk9training  7 місяців тому

      Just like anything - say the command and THEN get the behavior with a food lure or leash pressure, whatteveer you can do to get it. Once they do it - reward with high value reinforcement experience, then do it again. It sounds like you have more trouble leaving your dog in the crate - which is a totally separate thing from naming the command "crate". That is just done overtime. You can let them cry it out (put in headphones) and/or you can interrupt them. But don't ever let them out of the crate while they're crying then you are reinforcing the whining. Wait for a moment of silence, and then let them out. Build upon those few moments.

    • @jessicahay9305
      @jessicahay9305 5 місяців тому

      My son uses "bed", as in "go to bed" it's a single syllable word that's easy for his dogs to understand, and it isn't used with the dogs in any other context.

    Great video! It's helping me train my newly adopted 7 year old cattle dog mix to her kennel. I rushed the training at the beginning so we're starting back at square one. We're around the two-to-four paws in the crate but no turn around yet. I noticed you're not rewarding him when he wanted to stay in the kennel. Why was that? I've been rewarding my dog when she stays in there to investigate to try and build up the good association with the crate again but am not sure if that's the best move on my part.

    • @leadoffleashk9training
      @leadoffleashk9training  5 років тому +4

      Because this particular session is about that action of walking in so I am 'marking' that action with a "YES" (which means food reward.) I build upon that with the turnaround and eventually into a lie down. Finally, I will let him lie down in there and then work on duration (staying put) with the door open and give him treats to reinforce what he is doing (lying in the crate)

    Where should my dog sleep at night when he first comes home from the shelter and he’s not yet crate trained? It seems like if I put him in the crate at night before he’s ready I could derail progress

    • @leadoffleashk9training
      @leadoffleashk9training  4 роки тому +4

      Steve Stratton No, actually, it’s the opposite. He will derail his process if you don’t put them in a crate at night right away. He’s been in a crate in the shelter, and you don’t want to have to re-teach him that later. It’s not about the dog being ready, it’s about you teaching him all that he needs to know to be a confident and well behaved dog. You want to start with high structure now, to get things under control. If you start with only freedom and affection, that will derail the process. Love your dog by leading him. Use the crate as structure when you’re not there to provide it. Sleeping time at night ... you’re not there to provide any structure so use a crate. It keeps the dog safe and it gives them a secure place to sleep. I hope this makes sense. If not let me know

      Thank you so much! None of the crate training videos I’ve seen have been clear on this point. Everything just seems to say don’t try to rush your dog into the crate and that it may take many days for him to become comfortable in the crate. It also doesn’t seem to be safe for him to be outside the crate at night when we are asleep. We are very excited to get our new dog in a few days. I just want to make sure I’m as prepared as possible to make his transition as easy for him as possible. I know rescue dogs have typically been through a lot being transferred up from the southern states.

    • @leadoffleashk9training
      @leadoffleashk9training  4 роки тому +3

      Steve Stratton I don’t know if you have kids or not, but if you have a new baby and they’re in your bed at night and then you transfer them to a crib, there is crying. It’s kind of the same with a dog. Every dog I’ve had, from a puppy, they immediately sleep in a crate from the get go. They may cry at night, I may sleep on the floor next to them but I ignore the crying and take them out (because they’re a puppy) for potty time in the middle of the night. An older dog just let them work it out In the crate. They don’t need to go to the bathroom because they’re not a puppy. A lot of people think crates are for teaching a dog to be house trained only. Not the case. They need it to work on state of mind to be a relaxed and confident dog when they’re alone. This is something the owners need to teach the dog. Dogs don’t need to remain in crates forever, but it is a skill that they all should have for the first year of their life.. They will figure it out. He might cry but don’t give in. They always get over it! I assure you this! If it goes beyond crying and whining and his clawing and biting at the crate let me know.

      get a training collar (prong is what I use) and feed it through the back of the kennel. now say "kennel" and have someone use gentle pressure to pull him into the kennel. As soon as he walks on his own, it is imperative that you release the pressure. once he enters all 4 paws inot crate say "good". (marker training - you can watch that video on my UA-cam channel). You can look at my video of how to introduce a prong collar to a dog to help you.

    So when do you shut the gate on the crate ?

    • @leadoffleashk9training
      @leadoffleashk9training  6 років тому +2

      Good question - after about this much time of working, close the kennel door and then stay in the room with him. Every now and then say good and give him a treat. If he whines, say "nope!" and bang on the crate to literally startle him out of his whining. Then after 30 or 60 minutes, whatever seems appropriate for the dog, open the crate, don't let him rush out and then when he is politely waiting for you to say "ok" you can get out and then go do some training, some play, a walk and then repeat.

      "IQ Level, psychological level"? lol what? every dog takes their own time to adapt to new thing. its not about IQ and psychological level. It's about how patient you are and your training method.

    So 10 minutes of this how often each day? I’m adopting an 11 month old staffy and I just want to be sure I’m doing things right from the start but not overwhelming her either. What would you recommend for day 1-3 at home after her leaving the shelter? What about at night IF the crate makes her to anxious?

    • @leadoffleashk9training
      @leadoffleashk9training  2 роки тому

      It is less about how many minutes more about how the dog responds. If is is easy for the dog to go in and be in the crate with the door closed, then you don't have to work on it. By this time maybe you have your new dog and have tried it? Crate time is a good thing for any new dog - it helps establish structure and bouandaries when the human is not there to implement.

    ?: I want to start working with my dog on crate training. We have a collapsible wire crate and we'll only be using it for like 2-3 hours while we're working & only for 2-4 days so not very much b/c we mostly work at home. My question though is my boyfriend doesn't want the crate set up all the time.. is okay to be putting the crate away when not in use?

    • @leadoffleashk9training
      @leadoffleashk9training  3 роки тому

      Sure, but if you end up not using it because you’re tired of putting it up and down, then that’s where are the problem would lie. It is about being consistent.

    • @leadoffleashk9training
      @leadoffleashk9training  3 роки тому

      Also, the more time you spend upfront doing it, the quicker the dog understands the concept. If you only do two or three hours a week, then it will take you forever to get the dog calm, if it’s not calm going in there. It’s like if we had school time that was 20 minutes a day and recess that was 7 hours a day... it would take us a lot longer to learn anything in elementary school. I hope that makes sense

    • @leadoffleashk9training
      @leadoffleashk9training  5 років тому

      You are absolutely right! That is why I am a "balanced" trainer using treats and other positive reinforcement as well as positive punishment. Dogs that don't respond to the reinforcement respond to the punishment (operant conditioning) and teaching them about escape/avoidance. If you need more understanding re all of that, then Google and then write me back here.
