Some people have had no issues with 1080 raw. 1080 3x crop works, just not 1080 with my Capture card if that's where the issue lies. It only cost me $10-15. 10/12 bit are available. Disabling those will automatically leave 14 bit.

There's no 4K raw option, so that won't work,. Max is 2.8/3K or 5K in Timelapse. To use the smartphone as just a monitor is difficult as the Eos m screen goes blank sometimes and when you press the record button it will show on the monitor. 😎👍

1. Unfortunately not for iso. It should be though I reckon. 2. Possibly the Samsung Galaxy S5 or other cheap galaxy models or Google Pixel 1st/2nd Gen.
Hey Zeek! A quick question: is there any settings need to be done in eos m to mirror the picture to external monitor while shooting the video? The picture disappears on external monitor once I switch mode on eos m to Video (((
Awesome info, production and explanation, as always. I saw a comment down here where you say that it isn't possible to use the smartphone as "just a monitor". what do you mean by that? thanks!
Note for newbies: The problem with using any monitor that isn't meant to be used as camera monitor is that they often aren't neutral in color calibration. For example a Samsung phone is usually extremely overly vivid in color calibration so if you forget that you might assume what you're seeing is what the camera would be taking, which isn't the actual case.

Hey zeek I know this is kinda irrelevant to the video but I was just wondering if the 7artisans 35mm is good for the original EOS M at 1080p raw, I am trying to shoot some nice cinematic footage
Yeah I reckon, if that's the focal length you like. The field of view is around 56mm Full Frame. There is also the Meike 35mm F1.7/F1.4
7artisans 25mm 1.8 will give you a nice cinematic 40mm on the eos m.
@@titaniumshell
That's probably the best budget lens for the Eos m right now. Love that thing. 💎🎥
Paul Scott i will probably look into this one then ! jus waiting for an eos m to pop up on ebay at a decent price and i’ll take the plunge
Zeek thanks for the feedback, ur content is honestly so so helpful for people like me who want to get into using the canon eos m
Great vid sir!! I have a couple questions:
1. Is there an app for iPhone? I’m not seeing this one in the App Store and a google search is not yielding any results.
2. If I must get an android phone to do this, I would be looking for the absolute cheapest option that would run the app you used in this vid. Any recommendations on which android device to get?
1. Unfortunately not for iso. It should be though I reckon.
2. Possibly the Samsung Galaxy S5 or other cheap galaxy models or Google Pixel 1st/2nd Gen.
awesome!
Hey Zeek! A quick question: is there any settings need to be done in eos m to mirror the picture to external monitor while shooting the video? The picture disappears on external monitor once I switch mode on eos m to Video (((
If you're in 1080 Mode it for some reason won't work. It works in the others, but for some reason not the 1080 Raw mode. H.264 1080 is fine.
Zeek thanks man for a quick response! I will check that!
Awesome info, production and explanation, as always. I saw a comment down here where you say that it isn't possible to use the smartphone as "just a monitor". what do you mean by that? thanks!
You can use it as a monitor
@@ZeekEOSZ I know, but what i understood is that the smartphone controls the camera screen, so you can't use it as "just a monitor", right?
Note for newbies: The problem with using any monitor that isn't meant to be used as camera monitor is that they often aren't neutral in color calibration. For example a Samsung phone is usually extremely overly vivid in color calibration so if you forget that you might assume what you're seeing is what the camera would be taking, which isn't the actual case.
Hey, it doesn't work 😢
@@Florianjager8008 Need more info.
- What camera do you have
- What HDMI Capture card are you using
- What smartphone are you using
- What Android app are you using for viewing
Change to split screen for that sweet vr experience LOL
Definitely! 😄😉
Does focus peaking work with the smartphone monitor? I can’t get focus peaking to work properly on my feelworld monitor with my eos m.
Focus peaking will have to come from the ML Menu. I don't use that, I use Oversharpen LV which makes edges appear sharper for better clarity and focus. Works great. A better 4k capture card may work better too, mine is only 2.0 1080p. Bought a 3.0, I'll test it out.
Ah gotcha. It seems like a few things don't work properly with external monitors. Have you had luck using one for anything above the 1080 modes at ~24 fps?
@@joeyvfx_official
On the smartphone as a monitor, higher resolutions than 1080 work fine, like 2.5k, 2.8K RAW. 4K works fine on my Sony A7SII. Great for a quick setup monitoring solution.
Can this method works on a hard drive? Like instead of using a phone, the video capture card will be plugged directly to a hard drive or a storage where it has GB memory to it like sd card or something. In that way the video or files that you’ve recorded will be saved to the device like hard drive or sd card that i mentioned. Please respond thanks!
Unfortunately not. This camera came out in 2012 😆🙌🎥🔥
@@ZeekEOSZ thanks for letting me know sir!
Hi Zeek. first of all thank you for these informative videos. I have few questions. 1.Would this work without magic lantern also? 2. if it only works with magic lantern ,can i shoot for longer time if am not shooting in raw?
Yep this will work without magic lantern for sure. You don't need to shoot raw 👍
Hi Zeek, I followed your steps. But I get no video output on liveview. But I do get video output when I am on Menu mode or when I'm on preview mode when looking back on my raw footages. I am using ML on EOS M2. Thanks.
Install the latest ML Build on Danne's forum and that will fix it all 😎🤘
is this still working in 2022? I mean, does it works with latest android's versions? thanks
Is this still a good option in 2024
is there a chance that i could use the EOS M as a webcam? how?
You can as I have heard from other users. You'll need a capture card though. I haven't used it as a webcam so I'm not sure which software for webcam use will work.
Hello! ZEEK. I want to know what software my iPhone can use to do the same thing?
I don't have an iPhone so I can't see. You could search something like USB Camera to HDMI camera in the App Store.
@@ZeekEOSZ thank you! ZEEK. I am from China, I have already spent 35 RMB to buy an HDMI video capture, it only supports USB2.0. Wait for me to test it, and then consider whether to change to USB3.0
No problem :)

what aspect ratio? 2.35:1 / 2.39:1 10 bit should be continuous RAW and 16:9 less than a minute.

I have a old android with micro usb, would it work ? (or thunderbolt, over old iphone?)
Android will work with the right cable, not iPhone with this app.
is it have focus peaking??
Hey Zeek, thanks for your contents.
I've tried this method on my eos m and all the different apps show the auto and camera monitoring well but it's a black screen when it comes to video. Can't see anything. Do you know why?
Download the latest ML Build. There should be a link source to "dannephoto eosm" otherwise Google it and get the latest build. All should be fine now with the new updates 🤘
Hello, is there playback on the 5D Mark III using ML? Thanks
Yes there is 😎👍
@@ZeekEOSZ Thanks, I will look into it.
Hi zeek what app would I need to use for a iPhone please
I don't own an iPhone, so I wouldn't know. Try typing HDMI monitor apps in app store.
Do you still use this or it’s not that effective anymore
It's still effective yes 👍
It's good for the 2K Mode, but with other crop modes the info button won't work to check real framing unfortunately
can you hear the sound output if you plug headphones to the phone ?
No
@@ZeekEOSZ ahh , that's unfortunate , but il give a try to see how the monitor works , thanks anyway .

no frame drop or lag on live view on smartphone when using it for video? is the app also compatible with nikon?
No frame drop or lag. 🎥👌
Used it on my Sony & 5D2 works perfectly! Should work with Nikon too, though I haven't tested it. Works on Canon + Sony so far.
@@ZeekEOSZ that's good news and thanks for the tutorial, btw there is no focus peaking on the app?
No focus peaking in the app, depends if your camera can use focus peaking.
which capture card?
Can you tab to focus?

Dear friend, can I ask if the SDXC SanDisk Extreme Pro 64GB UHS-I U3 4K V30 170MB / s memory card is suitable for recording 2k videos? I just bought the eos M but don't know how to use it yet. I installed magic latern.
SD Card SanDisk Pro is fine, not the Adapter with the micro SD.
I have a lot of ML settings video for the Eos m on my channel, this is the easier beginner versiom:

1080 mode is the normal mode, it's the base for creating videos, the others are extra.
Does touch focus work when using mobile screen as display?
No it doesn't
Hi I can’t find the same app for apple phone
Any help?
I only use Android. But there should be similar apps for IOS. Maybe try Camera Monitor on the App Store.
Hey! what if I dont use the capture card? will it just display the Camera Live View ? My main goal is just just Get the live View on the Phone.
No it woun't work unfortunately.
Im trying to capture hdmi output but camera only produces like 480p picture, could that be because of 4k cable I’m using?
It's not the cable, the M just sends out a 480p signal. Check your EOS M, are you using ML?

Yes you can. The limit is the capture card. But you should still be able to see properly from the smartphone 👍
