I have a simple beer bread recipe, everyone might like. 3 cups flour, 1 TBPS Baking powder, 1/4 sugar, 1 tsp salt, 1 1/2cup beer, preheat oven to 375 grease your bread pan, add batter bake for 45 minutes, last 15 minutes add 1/4 cup sharp cheddar cheese. It is so yummy we use a local beer this won't last more then the day 😊.
My granny in southern WV made this bread when we were little in the early 1960’s. She always fixed it with homemade beef stew in the winter. She called it “Sodee Bread”
The cross for religious reasons, yes. But you need to poke a hole in each quarter (1/4) to release the fairies according to tradition. Yep, I am part Irish.
I'm certainly going to give this bread a try Jinnie... I think it will be great with soups and stews. Praying that I'll be able to cook Christmas dinner... I spent ALL day in the hospital yesterday and still very weak along with a lot of un answered questions about my health. Everyone stay safe and God Bless you and your family from middle GA 🙏 Kendra
Being from an Irish and French Canadian family, it would definitely be an adjustment with the texture and taste buds going back to my childhood years. But hey... it's FOOD! 👍👍💯
My Grandma made this when she made lamb stew on the farm. Lambs are needed for rennet to make cheese. We made cheese with cows & goat milk, and ate lots of Lamb stew with soda bread. Homemade butter on fresh soda bread is the BEST!
Ideas for Christmas dinner from preps without electricity? Sounds like Friday's storm could cause long power outages and some Mainers don't have power back yet from last Friday. Good times!
Beer bread is easier. I can keep a case of the cheapest beer cold and in my basement a lot longer than milk will last. Add a 12 oz. can of beer to self-rising flour and you have bread in 35-40 minutes.
When we visit someone we haven't seen in a long time I always take a blessing basket. Bread do that this house may never know hunger, salt do that life is lived with flavor,.and wine for prosperity and Joy.
Right on time, Ginny! I was using my bread machine yesterday, and was thinking: "This machine really has me spoiled. I need a back up plan in case we lose power." And here you come with the solution! I am definitely saving this recipe. I have a camp oven that sits on top of my pot bellied stove, and I would use that to bake this delicious looking bread.
This looks wonderful! & brought back fond memories of my Irish Grandma who always made us Soda bread but she would put raisins in hers too! I think I’ll make some for Christmas! Thank you for sharing! 🎄❤️ 🍞 🎅🏻
I have used water instead of milk, as well as a milk and water mixture. It does not taste as "creamy" as milk, but still a loaf of bread. Merry Christmas and love from South Africa (a country on the Southern tip of Africa)
I have a yeast bread recipe that I make that is similar to this one. I am getting ready to make this one. It is great to have options. My son loves the homemade breads. So, I am making this one for him as soon as I get off of here. Thank you Jin for sharing this recipe.
Have made this bread 3 times as it is so easy. Substituted my homemade whole milk yogurt and works well. Also divided the dough into 2 smaller loaves .
Yumz, Love Soda Bread. 👍😋 Always worth having a couple of basic Bread/Rolls or Flatbread recipes in your arsenal. They can be tweaked by adding Sweet or Savoury additions too. TFS HC, take care & keep really busy everyone. 🎅🎄☃️
I have made this a couple of times and love it, crusty like you said. I've made beer bread & it was so easy. My problem is I dont have it down to memory. This is wonderful for winter's soup & stew. As always my favorite is good old cornbread & got to have buttermilk to crumble in for dessert.
I don't mind saying I was a little worried about your fingers when you were slicing the loaf, but I was happy to see everything worked out ok - that's a great looking bread too!
Love all of your “how to” videos! You make everything look so easy. I just finished making snickerdoodle cookies with chocolate & Heath bar chips-pretty good and easier than I remembered!
Thank you for your video. Looks great! AND! I'd make that, .... if I had to. AGGHHH!!!!! Seriously, I make five loaves a week and after years and years of trying to make my Mothers bread with her recipe, I started making my own bread with my own recipe and it's finally turning out great. I don't know how Mum did it. Mum's recipe I made was always just so so, ... so with a little research and trial and error, I got it down pat. But I came across that Soda Bread a couple of times. Have a great one and good luck.
Great recipe for when I want bread but am looking to do it quick and easy. I make my buttermilk with milk and vinegar, add the baking soda to it and then mix it in my banana bread recipe. Delicious!
Goodness, that looks wonderful. I haven't made soda bread lately. I love how it can be used to create any flavor profile- savory, sweet, or neutral. It's so adaptable! I used to make soda bread (I'll add in bannock here too as it is another cheap "bread"; just no rise) often when I was in a real financial pinch. I had plenty of preps to work from (been a prepper nearly entire life), but there was still plenty I did not have. Some days it was pretty much just bread with a topping, or broth. Very easy, very cheap. Always satisfying even with my big appetite. I think the no hassle aspect is especially important. I could have a good loaf in a very short period of time. I love a heavy, dense bread. I like i best for toast, for french toast, and for mopping up sauces and soups. Think I will make some today, thanks!
Question: Because you are using some more flour to form the bread what if you cut back a quarter cup of flour mixing the bread? Might be a bit more moist. I've made Irish soda bread quite a bit with currents.
Have you made it with vinegar instead of lemon juice? I have a cornbread recipe I make with vinegar and baking soda, also wacky cake uses it. I do have some jars of lemon juice put away. Looks good.
Awesome.. I've been dabbling in bread making and having a hard time. This might just work. If I break down the dough to make buns, would it get harder or would it stay the same? Funny thing is, I normally don't have lemon juice. But, i recently dropped coffee and switched to tea and I love lemon in tea..now I have some..lol.. Thanks for the idea..Im gonna try this
Love all your videos keep up the good work. They're so informative and they really make me think about things. Question on the bread. Can I replace vinegar for the lemon juice? Thanks for taking the time and sharing everything you do.
Hey honey. How are you doing? You are looking so good what you doing to yourself? You always been pretty. I never have milk in my house my kids don't live here anymore and the only real time I have it is for my grandkids so it goes bad do you think I could use whole powdered milk?

I keep powdered buttermilk in the pantry ...... I love soda bread !!!!,,,,,, great for soups and stews !!!!
Thanks. I am going to make this tonight with my Ham Potato Soup.
It is a raining day with the storms that are comming in. Everyone take care.

You can buy a powered buttermilk for these soda bread. I keep two containers of powered buttermilk on hand.
I put my bread on a heating pad to help it rise.

I saw that Maine has a power outage. More to come. Prepare and pray.
I just invested in a new cast iron Dutch oven. Can hardly wait to start making homemade bread again. ❤️❤️
Awesome! I love my cast iron, we use the Dutch oven & 12" skillet the most! 💕🇺🇸
❤ I literally have a notebook dedicated for Jinnie’s Homestead Corner! Thanks Again for all the recipes and ideas….❣️ Writing this one in it 🫶🏽
Good idea. Need to start one.
I love Irish soda bread especially putting raisins in it that is so good❤
Buttermilk powder is great, I use all the time
I use the powder also because in New York City, it is hard to find buttermilk anywhere!
I have an old fashioned bread recipe but this is awesome for quick and easy also I'd out of electricity
Today is the 4th and I made the Emergency Bread last night with my homemade ham and potatoe soup. It was wonderful!!! Thanks again
I forgot about Irish Soda Bread!! I'll be making some after Christmas!! Thanks Jinni for sharing! ❤️
I keep buttermilk powder on hand and then you would just need water!
This looks wonderful! & brought back fond memories of my Irish Grandma who always made us Soda bread but she would put raisins in hers too! I think I’ll make some for Christmas! Thank you for sharing! 🎄❤️ 🍞 🎅🏻

Bread Crumbs if you grind it in the food processor or blender. 👍

I have been making a loaf every week, but I use instant yeast, bread flour, pink salt ,water and cheese
Tortillas or biscuits super simple
Some currants added would be good too

Looking yummy bread
My favorite! 😋
I wonder if you could do the buttermilk like that using powdered milk
Thanks!🙏💐
Hi Jinne 👋
Hi Maria 👋
Oh could you please put your recipes in the drop down box?
Hi Jinnie! Can you use whole wheat flour for this recipe? Thanks!
Yum!
Could you brush it with melted butter?
Can you evaporate milk with lemon juice? If so, how much of each?
Yummy!
Love all your videos keep up the good work. They're so informative and they really make me think about things. Question on the bread. Can I replace vinegar for the lemon juice? Thanks for taking the time and sharing everything you do.
Yes, vinegar would work as well.
I don't buy milk anymore, I guess watered-down canned milk would work?
Will powered milk work with the lemon juice or vinegar to make a “ buttermilk”?
Would that bread be so good as SOS.
You could add seeds or garlic in it?
It's a pretty dense bread, so I would keep any additives pretty small, I'm sure it would be great!
Can u use vinegar in milk instead of lemon juice? I remember vaguely learning that in home EC. ?
Yes, the vinegar will work as well.
I never have lemon juice in buttermilk. What can I substitute?
You could use vinegar in place of the lemon juice.
@@HomesteadCorner sweet, thanks. I've always got vinegar
Can you make French Toast with that Emergency Bread?
you sure could 😋
BUTTER.... Mmmmmmm
Do you preheat the cast iron or is it cold?
I don't pre heat the pan.
@@HomesteadCorner thanks!
Hey honey. How are you doing? You are looking so good what you doing to yourself? You always been pretty.
