  • Halving the cylinder count might have some fans up in arms, but Mercedes-AMG is convinced the new C63 S E Performance can win over the naysayers...
One thing is for certain: it's going to sound a whole lot different. For 2023, there's an electric motor working in tandem with four cylinders to deliver an astonishing 680hp. It can also be driven for up to eight miles on electric power alone, and uses F1-derived battery cooling techniques that allow for rapid discharging and recharge. There's even a Gran Turismo-style ghost for you to chase on a track day. Join us for a deep dive into what is set to be one of the most advanced performance cars around when it goes on sale.

Quick correction here. Our reference to supercharged engines was in relation to old '55s in general, not specifically the naturally aspirated C55. Hope that clears things up - Cam

People pick Mercs for the V8 lumps, BMW's for the handling and Audis for the quattro grip. This new electric one wont last long... Goes against everything there fan base/ owners are about.

My biggest problem with these is the complexity... For those of us who buy 10-15 year-old higher mileage cars, this likely just won't be an option. 🤔
I'll just stick with the old 2011 NA V8 guzzler, thank you.

I would rather they pumped the 2ltr a45s lump up to 500bhp and kept the weight at no more than 1700kg by binning off the hybrid system.

But does it have any soul? As somebody who this year sold a C43 AMG Estate, that had lots of soul, and bought an Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, which has lots of soul, this just looks like it’s completely missed the mark. I may be wrong, but the lack of marketing around performance prowess when combined with chronic downsizing, is concerning.

I think we'll need to wait until driving it before finding out if it has the old car's magic. The numbers and features are impressive, but until we can fire it up we'll hold judgement.

@@PistonHeadsTV well that’s the thing, they don’t appear to be letting anybody drive it. I understand the thought behind it, this was going to be marketed as the working man’s AMG One “using F1 technology” but that’s been lost as the AMG One has been delayed and is widely regarded as a let down. Of course clearly my impression is based solely on these repeated walk around videos Mercedes keep pushing, but as their exact target demographic it’s disappointing. Feels like one of those ones whereby journalists will say it’s great just to manage the working relationship with the brand, but nobody will buy them. We’ll see, but so far they have already lost me as a customer.

To be it was never about the speed and power. It was about the noise and the grumble of big engines. Realistically, we never ever used the full power of these wagons anyway. But we bought it not for the speed, but for the noise and grumble.
This destroys that completely. There is no worth buying a 4-cylinder 63 line ever again.

The interior tech looks old and outdated before it even hits the road. Looks like iOS 5 and like most German cars they will never receive any form of useful update. It´s just a soulless fast car, but what most manufacturers don't get, it´s not about performance anymore. Emotion > Performance, at least for their AMG target group.

Nice vid, loving it ! 2145kg for the estate. No thank you. Not in 2145 years. That weight cannot be hidden in corners / under braking. And honestly I do not understand why the press/vid/blog guys like you do not do anything about it. It is you guys that have to herd the true petrol heads opinion. And that opinion is : Not the weight of a freight train. The New M3/4 has the weight of the F10 M5, the new M2 will be touching the 1800kg.......common guys. We want sub 1500kg performance cars. Ok ok :-) sub 1600 will also do. You (video guys) have all the tools at hand to provide the honest opinion of the petrolheads and you should no be waiting how it hides and disguises its ridiculous high kerb weight. If you would proceed like this, maybe then the trend of ever heavier cars will be turned downwards, back to where a proper road going weight belongs.

    • @7ludi

Thanks for commenting, Erik. The reality is it’d unfair of me to bash something that I haven’t driven. It’s very heavy at 2.1 tonnes but until I’ve been behind the wheel, I just don’t know how noticeable the difference is going to be over the old car. Lighter cars are better, sure, but it’s clear why cars like this are getting heavier. If they can do a good job of disgusting their weight, it certainly helps. But I’m not going to write off a car when I’ve not driven the thing.

How to market 💩: Just say F1 inspired and people will not notice it's a 4 cylinder.
A fully electric C63 would have been less controversial than this. I don't doubt for a second that this car will be super quick in a straight line and have massive in gear acceleration numbers but that is not what these cars are about. That 4 cylinder has no emotion but a tuneful IC engine will keep you entertained at city speeds.
Merc should have gone with a high performance 6 cylinder as the last of the line IC powered AMG C class which would have bookended the first and last IC AMG C class nicely.

Rubbish. If I want to play Gran Turismo I will play Gran Turismo i dont need a real car to simulate a comouter game. AMG cars should create drama and noise. All this 'tech' is a distraction from the fact its now a hybrid rather than a big v8.
