MFC Offroad Pinch Weld Mod In Depth Procedure - Fit Larger Tires On Your Cherokee

- Here we document and show you everything needed to fit larger tires on your Cherokee. Trim back that metal and heat up the liner to get a maximum tire diameter of 32.1" on your Jeep. That's the way it should have looked right from the dealer! The procedure shown in this video was performed on the body style of a 2014-2018 Cherokee. If you have a 2019 and newer Cherokee, some additional trimming will be done to the front side of the front tire area of the lower liner trim, but not much. Here is a quick breakdown of tire sizing and fitment.
Fit up to a 30.5" tire with ZERO cutting or trimming. (245/70R17) no lift.
Fit up to a 32.1" tire with trimming and cutting as shown in the video. (255/75R17 or 265/70R17) with lift.
Can be done on all model year KL Cherokee's.

I was just thinking before you uploaded this that I needed to do something about my KL rub
Perfect video to post! Waiting for my 2" lift and definitely considering this mod for the bigger tires! Thank you Jesse! Appreciate all you do for us Cherokee KL owners :)
Thank you.
Good video getting these more updated tech videos for folks. Also glad you went over the safety part as so many miss that. Only think I would suggest is do a tool list in the desc of the videos for folks that want to get things ready before watching the video.
Instead of the self tapping sheet metal screws what I did for the liner was I cut the liner in the L shape so the extra material would be removed and it laid flat. Than I took some TUFF TAPE and put it over the wheel well and it gave me a more flush look. On the 2019 my issue more was the front of the front tier liner rubbing when I turned all the way than anything. With that I just trimed the bottom 1" off of it.
Thanks for the idea!
Thanks for using the proper PPE's during that grind work.
It makes a difference with longevity on the job.
Instead of using a hammer, use a rag or wear gloves to push and hold liner back once it’s heated up.
I suggest using zip ties to pull the liner back instead of tapping into the sheet metal.
Awesome instructional. Unfortunately, I live in the DC area and don't have a garage so I can't do too much myself. Just bought a Trailhawk and you guys aren't too far from me. I might just come up to you to throw the lift and tires on and do this mod after the new year. Your channel and products were one of the deciding factors in me buying a Cherokee in the first place.
What are the largest tires with your 3" lift and this mod that you've been able to fit without major rubbing?
Largest tire would be 30.5” diameter. As for install, just let us know and we can schedule you in!
That second screw with the washer ain’t holding sh!t 😅 😂 thanks for the video though. I appreciate it 🙏
Ahahahahah. I added a very large washer and it wasn’t caught on the video 🥴
i found using a heat gun, heating up the plastic, forming it to the metal. then cooling it down. actually work timing is alot faster.
Did you still grind?
Great video. I installed the 2” lift and did the pinch weld modifications but my tires are hitting in front of the tires. Front tire. 2021 Cherokee Trailhawk. Any suggestions?
Depending on what tire and size you will have to trim some of the plastic on the factory fender flare
Tire size 265/70R/17 just rubbing a little in the front.
Rubs when I turn.
Awesome detail for this. Does grinding down the weld weaken it at all? I’ve seen different opinions about it. Some say cut and fold it back, some just say cut it.
It really is excess metal, and no compromise has yet to be discovered after 7 years of doing this thousands upon thousands of times across the US.
@@jesselambros8520 that is the best, non-speculative, real world answer I’ve gotten out of anyone for any mod… thanks guys.
@@ChuckUnderFire you are welcome
@@ChuckUnderFire I work with metal fabrication most my life, the cutting and hammering is only going to cause cracks in the welds so it's no better than to grind it down and clean it up. As stated it's extra metal/welds and not very key points so it's not going to do any harm. The main thing is once done get a good strong layer of coating over them so they don't have any chance of issues. I actually just went a head and sprayed that whole area under the liner with the bed liner.

I saw people saying that 265 65 r17 fits the Cherokee kl trailhalk with no need to apply any mods, is that true?
Yes and no. Some of the tire manufacturers that offer that size have the tires run slightly bigger, thus you wind up rubbing. The 245/70R17 is proven to never rub.
Do you have information on how to grind down the front trim of the front wells? I have 1.25" spacers and there's substantial rubbing.
Spacers will cause more rubbing than expected so either trim where the spacers are causing the tire to rub or remove the spacers
Was the 30.5 inch tire referenced the max size with pinch weld removed or stock?
I'm searching for absolute max with no mods / minor rubbing is fine
Thanks for all you guys do.
Max tire size you can use without trimming is 30.5”. Safe bet for this size is 245/70R17
@@jesselambros8520 so with the trimming I can fit 32” easy or will there still be rub?
When adding the 32" tire are there any issues with speedometer calibration? Basically what I'm getting at is would the jeep need to be regeared after a 3" lift and using this method to add the 32 inch tires?
Thank you for posting a question Bret. The Cherokee cannot be re-geared for larger tires above 29.5” or have the speedometer recalibrated. It’s best to use the 10% calculation. If your speedometer says 60, you’re really doing 66.
What's the largest tire size you can run with just a 2" or 3" lift?
With just a 2” and 3” is 30.5”. If you don’t mind trimming, you can go up to a 32” with those lifts.
@@jesselambros8520 is it possible to heat that seam and hammer it over rather than grinding off? Just curious if you've tried that as well.
Could this mod be done on a 2012 wk2 to fit a 285/75/18? Thanks
Did you ever end up doing this asking about my 2011 wk2
what happened to the new item that was supposed to drop june 21st?
It’s in production!
Are you thinking roof basket!? Haha. I really hope that's what it is!
so 32's are the tallest tire for 2016
32” tires are the largest for all years
OR you could do it the right way and buy a lift kit.
The only way to fit larger tires like these (32”) is with a lift kit. This is a video showing how to fit larger tires AFTER the lift kit is put on. Not only is an MFC Offroad lift kit needed, but addressing these rub points are the next step. 😉
@@jesselambros8520 Very good but you did not say this was after the lift kit.
@@gldsmith61 surely this is mentioned in the video or in the description
@@jesselambros8520 I watched it twice and did not see or hear anything about that but I am glad you guy's are making a 2' lift . I have now watched your vid on that 2' lift and it look's to me to be a great lift so I will be checking more into it.
@@gldsmith61 thank you. I reviewed the video as well. Not mentioned, but it is mentioned in video description
This is the wrong way to do this. You should not grind off pinch welded flanges. You are weakening the chassis by doing that. All you do is fold them over flat with a hammer, there's no grinder involved
Thank you for your insight, however this has been successfully done dozens of thousands of times on this platform with zero issues.
Oh hello troll....what evidence do you have this is "weakening the chassis" its a unibody vehicle...........its not hurting anything, couldn't you maybe take the time to explain what part of the chassis is damaged and weakened by this......bet you won't. GO jerk off to modified cherokee kl some more
