This is one of the greatest, possibly most underrated, rock songs of all-time, and the best "slow" rock solo in guitar rock history...for sure in the Stones' amazing catalogue (IMHO). Beautiful and haunting, Mick Taylor teases you with a few lines after that first verse as a preview to the soaring, majestic, very emotive solo that begins around 3:22. Epic...RIP Charlie Watts.
Agreed with everyone. Not only one of the Stones best, but possibly one of the best songs ever. Totally underrated, and one of the best guitar solos ever!
I’ve always felt Mick Taylor had been listening to the early ‘70s era Carlos Santana at this point. His solo has a lot more than a passing resemblance to Carlos’ playing on the Caravanserai album. “Song Of The Wind” seems like it was a template for Mick’s solo here. And it fits the song like a glove. All good! This one’s for you, Charlie. RIP, 8/24/21
@@MTMF.london of all the different versions of the band, the one with Taylor was definitively the best. But "Some Girls" and "Tattoo You" are still must own Stones records.
I never understood how this song wasn't a bigger hit than it was. I actually put this in the top ten songs The Stones ever did; it's certainly one of the last throes of their greatness after coming off of Sticky Fingers.
I agree wholeheartedly... and the guitar and piano form a majestic tapestry of dreamlike splendor, floating to the heavens. Unforgettable...a pointed anecdote to the vacuous, "Time is on my side."
I am 65 years old and they are over 70 years old. More than 45 years I followed their great work. They are great people in one great group. I Love the Rolling Stones.
A masterpiece. Arrangement : brilliant. Lyrics : so poignant and evocative - Jagger's diction and delivery is perfect for the song. Piano : fantastic . Guitar solo - Taylor at his very best. Will be still admired in 1000 years time.
I think 1000 years is a bit optimistic...we'll be lucky to have another 100 at the rate we're going...which might not matter to us directly, but future generations? I doubt they'll be quite as fortunate...
Mick Taylor at his best and in his prime. One of the few guitarrists, who feels and understands what music is. It is a pity that we can hear and admire him so seldom directly and or in the net. But it is probably the destiny of a genius who cannot be seen and enjoyd by everyone and everywhere. Having been a member of of John Mayall's band and of the Stones and having worked together with Jack Bruce he has become an eternal icon of blues. We can hope that he will be active in the blues scene many years ahead.
Mick Taylor helped save us from the agony of losing Brian and this song proved he was more than a session player,he had the heart of the Stones in his fingers !
By far one of the best (if not the best) Rolling Stones Stones songs EVER DONE!!! The guitar, with the added touch of piano at the end- is just- incredible!
This song is fabulous on every level. Taylor guitar work is classic, but Charlie Watts drumming is him at his best...if there is any doubt as to whether or not he belongs with the greats, listen to this song..RIP.
This used to be the last song I would hear before falling asleep when i was about 16. I would put the Stones L.P. on the record player and go to bed.....sure brings back memories.
M.T, may be the most under rated guitarist I've ever had the pleasure listening to. No coincidence the Stones did their best work when he was in the band. Get Yer Ya Ya's Out incredible album. Glad to see other people appreciate him as well.
Funny, I think it's very much a coincidence that the Stones did their best work then, as they were peaking as songwriters, as many bands do around the seven-year mark. I love Mick Taylor, but Clapton or any talented blues-rock guitarist would've brought similar qualities to the Stones. Also, Beggar's Banquet and Let It Bleed were both written and recorded with minimal to no involvement of Taylor, who's not at all on BB, and plays minor parts on two songs on LIB.
Turned 70 a month ago..song is so meaningful the older I get...little things that used to bother me don't matter as much anymore..love will find away..peace to all...
Can't possibly overstate how brilliant this masterpiece of a song is. Love the Stones to death, &, not only is this the best track on "It's Only Rock 'N' Roll", but one of the very best things they ever did......Mick Taylor is just incredible here.......
The emotion in this song is so intense! Mick Jagger's scat singing cannot be learned - it must be felt. This makes him some type of genius to find his way around in this Mick Taylor song. The singing and Mick's guitar could move the soul of a brute.
There is a Van Morrison touch here in Mick Jagger 's delivery. Very nice... With Mick Taylor on board they could have expanded their musical horizons further more. Let's never forget what magnificent albums they produced in the period 1969 - 1974.
generalmuss Mick has good taste, and he always copied the best. Van Morrison, in those days, was on another level. Good catch, he sounds a lot like Van here.
Let's never forget that MT didn't play a significant role on record until Sticky Fingers in '71, and Let It Bleed was a Keith Richards lead guitar showcase.
If you listen carefully, one can feel a lifespan in this song.....from birth, to teen, then college, career, old age and inevitably death......with the heartbeat slowly going to zero.
Amazing and beautiful Mick Taylor's solo guitar at the end of this track, as saying goodbye to Stones and all their fans. Thanx Mick (Taylor) and Brian for all the good and better times. Thanx so much guys.
Write lyrics that Keats, Shelley or WB Yeats would be proud of. Choose instrumentation and an arrangement that perfectly suits the mood of loss, nostalgia, longing and wistfulness. Listen to Jagger's subtle nuances and little vocal inflections that are perfectly judged and cry out. Finally add a perfect guitar solo that out-Santanas Santana. What do you have A F****** Masterpiece and an eternal timeless classic. LOVE IT

Yes he did.
Easily the best the Stones ever had!
For sure!!!

Charlie Watts admitted by himself that the best stuff the Stones ever produced were made in that era.

Great taste

Nicky Hopkins and Mick Taylor helped put together the best instrumental effort imaginable here.
I'm very grateful to have survived the 70's and very grateful the stones did!
Yaz Mick Taylor took the Stones to another level
Mick Taylor was in the Stones for only about four years. A great guitar player. I guess the craziness of Mick and Keith was too much for him.
Just like Brian Jones did

Mick Taylor smokes on this f ing solo l can not describe it in one word!
Otherworldly
I forgot how absolutely gorgeous and emotional Mick Taylor's leads are on this. Stunning work, Mr. Taylor!!
He is THE Rolling Stone for me. They were never as good once he was gone.

Brilliant . . . Mick Taylor years
I could listen this masterpiece all day long . . . Never gets old.
Don't forget the late great Nicky Hopkins on piano!
Surely the most beautiful and melancholic guitar solo in the history of rock and roll. So good it actually makes me cry

This is the most profoundly beautiful song the Stones ever released. The lyrics paint an eloquent picture of the brevity of life.

I agree. Moonlight Mile and Winter are classics as well.
Favorite Stones song of all time and so criminally over looked. Next would be Winter !
"Child of the moon" also is a great Stone song , not famous enough..
For me, never overlooked, play this and Winter all the time!
And I wish I'd been out in California, When the lights on all the Christmas trees went out...
The tone sounds like Santana...or is it the other way 'round?.
I agree Mick Taylor was there best guitar player. I consider him one of the all time greats.
That's one guitar playing SOB.

Apt assessment and excessive optimism.

Yes, the late great Nicky Hopkins on the brilliant piano parts.
Bill Wyman's Moog Synthesizer is also a nice touch.
The incomparable Nicky Hopkins on piano, he was the best, he deserves to have his name listed,
What a beautiful solo by Mick Taylor, he also played bass on this track.
R. I. P. Charlie...time waits for no one.
Mick Taylor's solo work in this song is legendary, He is a true master and really does not get his due. Thank you nomad for putting this up.
Happy to share the Stones and Mick Taylor. :)
Mick Taylor vastly underrated!!!

And he and Jagger alone were responsible for this song. Possibly their finest. On the day of the passing of Charlie...
he was hardly legal age to drink lol
" One of the few guitarrists, who feels and understands what music is. "
Ridiculous
With Mick Taylor, the Stones were at their peak.
Top three Stones solos of all time, all Mick Taylor: Time Waits For No One, Winter, Sway

Winter…agreed! Not just the solo, but what he did through the whole thing.

This solo is arguably Mick Taylor's finest moment with the Stones. Does it for me, anyway.

one of the best solos of all time...
Mick Taylor's soloing here evokes Dickie Betts when Duane Allman was still alive (at least for me). The melodic style is really superb.
I think that Mick Taylor evoques Carlos Santana.
Very true .. although i feel a bit of Carlos Santana as well sometime there ..
I think the tone is similar to Santana largely because both played SGs.
One of their more under appreciated tunes. Their music beats the crap out of anything produced today.
