I think my favorite thing about this historian is that she shows that history can and should be fun. It doesn’t have to be a boring lecture. Every style has its pros and cons, but in an era where people view history as less and less important, I think it’s awesome that she has such a fun way of looking at and talking about history.

I have others whom I love to watch, but that trio are up there as my all time favourites. I’m a big fan of Kate Lister also. These ladies make history come alive, and dare I say, make history cool.

As an early medieval historian, we may not have much in terms of surviving clothing but we have fabulous jewelry/treasure galore! Ostrogothic, Germanic, Anglo-Saxon, Visigothic and Byzantine brooches, fibulae, armillae, votive crowns, reliquaries, jeweled crosses, treasure bidings and torques! The votive crown of Recceswinth, part of the amazing Treasure of Guarrazar, is a personal favorite!

@@nickh.4917 Incredible right?? Votive crowns weren't worn, they were hung over church alters. When the Treasure of Guarrazar was found, it contained 26 votive crowns and gold crosses and while a few pieces, like this one, were given to different museums, most were either sold to private collectors, melted down or stolen. There are so many amazing early medieval metalwork pieces available in museums for the public to see but this and the Sutton Hoo helmet are my absolute favorites.

You could do an entire tier list just based on Hans Bruggeman's sculpture 'Christ Bearing his Cross' from Schleswig Cathedral. It's a crowd scene with dozens of figures, and nearly every single one of them is wearing a different silly renaissance hat. Each sillier than the last. There's a cast of it in the Victoria and Albert Museum and it cracks me up every time I see it. Hans Bruggeman has gone absolutely out of his way to document every single type of silly hat he could, and they're all fabulous.

I tend to wander around in fantasy-style clothes as i go about my daily business...one set being a gown with a 14th century "bars of hell" sideless surcoat on top of a T-tunic style gown.
I can confirm, as someone who regularly wanders around in this stuff, they are quite comfy and yes, i do get compliments on it! Comfy, practical and stylish!

I've been doing an art series about mythological drowned women (I call it Weeping Water Women) and honestly if you think about how much fabric everyone was wearing and think about how labour intensive laundry was no wonder female water spirits haunt almost every body of water in the world . My only hope is that some of them actually went off to have a Lesbians Retreat To The Woods trope romance but sadly a bunch of them were probably just straight up people who drowned and got mythologized.

Both the hennin and the bourrelet (also called escoffion, depending on the time and region) were also given their shapes using card, starched fabrics like buckram, or by stuffing with cotton wadding, all of which would make them MUCH lighter and way more comfortable than a wire armature! I've made variants of both for theater productions, and while I had the luxury of machines, fusible interfacing, and polyester, even without those tools it was possible to create some fairly ornate styles that were still reasonably comfortable and easy to wear.

Why did you call the kirtle a chemise? Isn’t the chemise the white undergarment worn underneath the blue dress pictured? Or do they does the kirtle have other names; I know the chemise can also be called a shift or chainse or smock.

    • @caraelliott9909

Usually in the medieval Era the white undergarment was a shirt for men or a smock, also, there wasn't much difference between the two for peasants
