  • There had seemingly been no limit to the grand political ambitions of Maximilian II Emanuel, but he ultimately failed to turn any of them into reality. One of his greatest schemes would on the other hand be realized by his son, Charles Albert. In 1742 he became the Holy Roman Emperor Charles VII, and thereby dethroned the Habsburgs from that position for the first time in centuries.

@@Your_Eagle_One nope, lol - I am a Habsburg royalist though and so I know the story and fate of the person who tried to usurp power from our beloved rightful dynasty ^^
I am not surprised that another member of the same Bavarian family later betrayed another rightful Habsburg Emperor - for a kingship by Napoleon's grace... "kings" of Bavaria by writ of a Corsican general... could only have been worse if it had been by a "Bohemian private".

That was a JOKE from Voltaire. At his time he might have been quite right as the HRE was about to fade into oblivion. But it WAS Roman as Italy belonged to the Empire for hundreds of years, also HOLY as the Emperors have been crowned by the Pope, and of course was it an empire if there ever has been one. It lasted 1.000 years (~800-1800 AD), just as the Byzantine Empire (~400-1453 AD) whereas the original Roman Empire only lasted 500 years (~27 BC-476 AD).
